Producer Q & A: Miguel Arroyo of Bodega Arroyo Izquierdo, Rueda, Spain

New on the blog: Q & A with Miguel Arroyo of Bodega Arroyo Izquierdo in Rueda, Spain. Miguel is nearly a one man show and makes only three wines, all from 100% Verdejo and all 100% unique among Verdejo producers in Rueda.

"We have always worked with Rueda producers over the years, but honestly most of them just weren’t that interesting. A lot of Rueda producers make commercial wines, blended with Viura and Sauvignon Blanc, and often are made using laboratory yeasts. Tasting Miguel’s wines is a completely different experience. Unlike many of his regional colleagues, Miguel’s wines are made with 100% Verdejo, his vines are a century old, his soil is simply made for Verdejo, and he has designed his vineyards in such a way that an entire vineyard can be harvested in a single day - at the exact peak moment of harvest. All of this care and concentration creates wines that are precise, interesting, and evocative of the person and the land they came from.”

“I was first introduced to Miguel Arroyo through the Andreas sisters, Ruth and Ana who own and operate Alegra, another Verdejo producer in Rueda. Other than the help he gets from Ruth and Ana in both domestic and international sales, Miguel is truly a one man show, and the wines he makes, unique s...

Producer Q & A with Andrea Cassini of I Sodi in Chianti Classico, Italy

“I hope the memory of visiting I Sodi for the first time and meeting Andrea Cassini, his father Franco, and his father’s twin brother Danillo never fades from my memory. Introduced through my friend Roberto Bechi who had recently convinced me to curate an Italian products trade show in Portland, Maine, the day was truly unforgettable.

A cold and blustery day, we quickly retreated inside where a fire that had been started well before dawn was down to a bed of hot embers. Above the embers half of a Ciangle turned slowly on a large spit, golden and crisp, occasionally oozing a drip or two of rendered fat onto the coals. The first chianti was opened, then one or two older vintages, then a riserva or two, each wine somehow more amazing than the last. As the final bottle was poured, a dusty bottle of their 1999 Riserva, we sat silently together savoring the wine and our thoughts. Non ci sono parole… there are no words, nothing more could be said.”

Climate Change and the Wine Industry

Climate Change and the Wine Industry, a topic that's come up a lot this harvest season. Read our take on our newest addition to our wine, food and travel blog.

"Climate change is already impacting the wine industry: grapes are ripening sooner with higher sugar levels and less acidity, unexpected rainfall in traditionally dry Mediterranean growing regions is wreaking havoc on harvests, early bud break is threatening entire vineyards, and from old world to new, Alsace to Yarra Valley, harvests are happening 2-4 weeks earlier than they were just 50 years ago."

Climate change and global warming have already started to make their mark on the wine industry. We will have to adapt to survive.

Producer Q & A with Howard Bilton of Howard's Folly in Alentejo, Portugal

New on the blog: Producer Q & A with Howard Bilton of Howard's Folly in Alentejo, Portugal.

"Our newest relationship, Howard's Folly, is particularly interesting to me. Why would a successful businessman (not from Portugal) go to the Alentejo to build a winery from scratch? How did Howard convince winemaker David Baverstock, who was busy leading the winemaking efforts for one of Portugal's larger wineries, to join him? While I can't answer these questions, I can say that these unexpected choices brought together a special team, and we are all lucky to be reaping the benefits of their labor and dedication. The Alvarinho, in particular, is a real treat."

Pétillant Natural: the O.G. of Sparkling Wine

"Pétillant Natural: the O.G. of Sparkling Wine" live on the blog now!

"Though there are several popular ways to produce these bubbly wines, the O.G. method is known as ‘Pétillant Natural,' which predates the more well-known, ‘Method Champenoise.’ Affectionately referred to as ‘Pet-Nat’ by mustachioed wine geeks, this style of wine has seen an increase in interest kin to the enthusiasm orange wines enjoyed almost a decade ago. Queen of the natural wine family, Pet-Nat deserves your undivided attention."

Plus two that we are absolutely loving for fall drinking available to purchase now in the online store.

In the vast realm of wine, sparklers are synonymous with celebration. New job? Bubbles! Engagement? Bubbles! Birth? Bubbles! It's Wednesday? BUBBLES! Sparkling wines are made in almost every major wine region and from almost every major grape variety. The world of sparkling wine also welcomes every....
