A wine from one of our beloved growers received the top prize in the inaugural Wines of Roussillon Coup de Coeur. We’ve loved the mineral, textured Domaine de Soulane’s Vieilles Vignes Blanc 2021 ever since it landed on our shelves so we’re thrilled to see it get the recognition it deserves.

Here’s what judge Natalie Earl had to say: “Waxy lemon, beeswax, honey and bruised apples. Great concentration, lovely fresh palate and texture. Touch of herbs and a long finish.”

We still have a few bottles on our shelves, so do grab one if you want to see what the fuss is about, and if you see a wine from the Roussillon do give it a try, it’s a very underrated region.

Lovable rogues Zac, Freddie, and head chef Jake have been pulling the crowds to their intimate restaurant on Hackney Road for a few years now, and we are thrilled to team up with them for a special Greek wine dinner on the 30th of May.

Greek wine is having a moment, with exciting bottles from artisan producers leading the way.

With authentic local grape varieties like Assyrtiko and Xinomavro, along with a wealth of terroirs from the Balkan forest to the Cretan dune, Greece has it all when it comes to being original and authentic.

Chef Jake Ayliffe has created a 5-course tasting menu including grilled octopus, unctuous lamb, and orange cake that will be paired with wines selected and presented by Daniel.

Tickets and additional information are available via the link in our bio.

For those who’ve made it to the slopes this year and for those who want to live the fantasy, we have some new beauties from France’s alpine region Savoie!

With only 2,000 hectares of vines, Savoie represents a tiny fraction of France's wine production. Compare that with Bordeaux’s 110,000 hectares and you have a sense of the artisanal nature of the wines made here. We have cherry picked a couple of bottles that we feel capture the essence of place and demonstrate how underrated this tucked away pocket of France really is.

Patrick Bottex Bugey Cerdon 2021

Wedged between Lyon and Geneva, Bugey is a tiny 500-hectare enclave of vines perched on the steep western flank of the Alps. Cerdon is one of three nominated sub-regions or crus, notable for their unique qualities, and for Cerdon this means sparkling wines only. This example is based on gamay, with a little poulsard, and is made using the ancestral method, whereby the wine finishes its fermentation in the bottle. There is a natural sweetness that is balanced by a fresh bite, and at only 8% alcohol it would make a really original, pink, fruity, and refreshing aperitif.

Domaine Bärtschi Chardonnay Sous les Rochers de la Vigne, Cru Manicle, 2021

Another Savoyard speciality with a wonderfully evocative name meaning 'under the rocks of the vine'. Downslope from the snowy peaks, on a steep south-facing site, Manicle is one of the rare crus, or growths, of the small Bugey appellation. Soils are a mix of limestone scree and clay, and the altitude and fresh nights bring a degree of refreshment, precision and, dare one say, minerality, a term now rather over-used in the wine lexicon. Crisp, crunchy, Alpine-flowery, and perfect with a ripe Vacherin before its season comes to an end.

Find these gems on our shelves and on the website.

We’ve been huge fans of Vilmart for many years, so were thrilled to get our hands on a few bottles of this 2017 vintage from grapes from 50-year-old vines premier cru sites in Rilly-la-Montagne.

Made with 80% chardonnay and 20% pinot noir, it’s aged for 10 months in new oak (which is relatively uncommon for Champagne), and then bottled for 42 months before disgorgement.

The result is sumptuous and expressive. It opens with lemon sherbet, creamy almond and gingerbread alongside a wonderful backbone of crushed shells and chalk, before treating you to a lightly honied finish.

The winery is certified sustainable, the farming is organic and the production is small. This is the benchmark of grower Champagne and is an absolute steal for a wine with so much to say. What’s not to love? 🍾🍾🍾

Christmas is just around the corner and that means champagne! If ever there was a Christmas to break out some special bubbles, this is probably it.

We've recently landed some extra-special bottles from Selosse. An icon of champagne, the wines barely need an introduction to connossieurs of the region. Variously described as 'revolutionary', 'iconic', 'Burgundy with bubbles' and 'too oxidative and too oaky', let's just say that until you've tasted Selosse, you can't say you've really tasted Champagne.

As we have very limited stock, it's strictly one bottle per customer, first-come first-served, instore only. Call or email your local store. Link to shop details in bio.

Madeira is a magical island in the Atlantic Ocean with a reputation for wines that have a legendary ability to age. The genesis of these gems originates in the island’s crucial role as one of the last victualling points for sailors before their long sea voyages to the Americas or south to Africa.

It is mountainous and volcanic, and blessed with fertile soils and a warm year-round climate hence an abundance of citrus fruits, bananas, and wine. The unique style of wine, which is fortified like a sherry or Port, developed thanks to the process of regular heating and cooling that was first observed after an unsold consignment of casks returned from a long sea voyage through the torrid tropics.

While this traditional process of maderisation, called canteiro, can be replicated in estufas, effectively saunas that can encourage this process more efficiently, the canteiro method generally allows for more complexity and depth.

Madeira is enjoying a renaissance recently but is still little known or understood by most wine drinkers. We recently opened a few bottles to taste and, unsurprisingly, they were a huge hit. If you missed out, we still have a varied range on our shelves, so do pop in and give one a try!

19/11/2022

In the spirit of Beaujolais Nouveau, this week we’re staying in our lane and drinking the cru stuff; sorry, not sorry. We felt cracking open a bottle of one of our young winemaking elites would do the trick and hey, let's make it his top wine from a tiny parcel of vines nestled close to the village of Regnie. Antoine Sunier’s Montmerond 2019 cuvee certainly lets us know he is grooving with the top brass of Beaujolais winemakers past and present.

With the help of his older brother Julian, Antoine was able to hit the ground running when he bought his first 0.8 Ha of vines in 2014; already an accomplished and respected winemaker in his own right, Julian’s expertise helped Antoine expand quickly and find the best sites in Regnie and Morgan. Their wines indeed show a family resemblance; they both follow strict biodynamic practices, but they champion their different terroirs to make unique expressions of gamay.

Hand harvested and fermented in the traditional whole bunch approach. No destemming, no filtering or fining, no added sulphur, and no room for squares.
A lattice web of beautiful red fruit notes alongside a toned mineral physique. Cru Beaujolais in its seductive prime.

Once in your glass, expect a juicy, high-spirited wine that tears off its clothes, dances around the kitchen and demands The Who ‘My generation’ played at full volume.

See you in-store, and we can show you the range.

Meet the Winemaker: Ian Naude, South Africa 🇿🇦🍇🍷

Tuesday 15th November, 7pm, Tufnell Park

The fast-moving, exciting and creative wine scene in South Africa has no leader but if it did, the name of Ian Naudé would be right up there.

Ian has been at the vanguard of innovative white blends, pioneering cinsault, the restoration of colombard and championing of the Old Vine Project, among his many other achievements.

Not just a gifted farmer and winemaker, Ian is also a wonderfully warm person, full of the positivity that typifies the current energy of the Cape wine scene, and one of the greatest ambassadors for the wines of South Africa.

We are thrilled to be able to host him in our Tufnell Park store, for what promises to be a very jolly evening. We hope you will join us to taste Ian's wines and hear the stories behind them.

Tickets are just £25 and and the team look forward to welcoming you. Hit the link in bio to book.

We’re celebrating wines from the Languedoc region, and this bottle needs centre stage. Of all our tastings this month, Ribeyrenc 2021 by Thierry Navarre has been an absolute highlight.

Third-generation vigneron Thierry Navarre is a true gem from this rugged outpost of France's Mediterranean coast. In the sub-appellation of St Chinian, he walks in step with his grandfather's vision as a specialist cultivator of rare grape varieties. In a region dominated by cooperatives producing bulk wine, the Navarre family’s nurturing approach is why the Languedoc’s true identity is in the hands of the small producers.

Made from 100% ribeyrenc, an ancient and almost extinct variety, Thierry’s grandfather planted what is still today the largest area of this variety (a tiny 3 hectares)—planted on loose brown schist that adds a freshness to the wines and facing southwest to catch the evening sun. Thierry’s estate is entirely organic, and he practises biodynamic farming.

The wine is juicy and elegant, with freshly crushed red cherry and raspberry, with a delicate earthiness that provides a savoury structure. At 11% abv, it's a match for something spicy, grilled tuna smothered in pico de gallo, maybe.

Spotlight on: Vale de Pios, Douro, Portugal 🇵🇹

The last of our Spring discoveries has finally arrived, safe and sound, all the way from the wild upper reaches of the Douro Valley.

Wonderfully characterful, mature reds and a gorgeous white wine speak of a special terroir, bottled by the careful hand of winemaker Joaquim (see his bashful smile in the third picture!)

In his own modest words “The less I do, the better I do.”

A firm believer that wine should be aged in his cellars until ready to drink, we are proud to bring his exceptional wines to the UK for the first time, and they have now arrived in all three shops. 🥇

From just over £12 to just shy of £40, there is excellent value, delicious red and white through to sublime, mature vintages to enjoy. Keep an eye out for our stories to see each wine in more detail…

With the looming prospect of financial ruin from making one too many cups of tea, we thought we’d let you in on one of our bargain bottom-shelf winners. Something to warm you through as we stave off the central heating for another week or two.

Chateau Labarth 2019 is a sumptuous 50/50 blend of cabernet and merlot. From this warm fragrant vintage the wine shows a harmonious chorus of ripe plums, blackberries and smoky supple tannins. A perfect match for a Netflix binge in your pyjamas or a formal roast dinner with the in-laws.

It’s the month of Bordeaux at Theatre of Wine and we’ll have loads to taste open in our stores, so come on down. Stay tuned as we have competition ahead to win some fabulously decadent prizes!

10/08/2022

With another roasting weekend ahead of us we are feeling a thirst for crisp libations to excite the palate and knock a summer salad pairing out of the scorched park. One producer with more than a few exquisite cuvees come to mind. From Austria's Kamptal region, in the village of Langenlois, the Rosner family first planted vines here in 1897. Passed down through generations, today father and son Norbert and Stefan Rosner are at the helm producing 24 different cuvees.

They practice organic viticulture, plant cover crops to encourage biodiversity and use yeasts indigenous to the region for fermentation. The intention is to create balance in the vineyard and maintain that harmony once in the cellar. The end result are wines with pure electricity and typicity. With an array of complex soils from loess, a clay limestone deposit at the bottom of the slope, to pure mineral bedrock above it, the wines range from round and fruit-driven to dynamic and precise in their cru wines.

With old vine riesling, aromatic gruner veltliner, and textured chardonnays, we adore the wines from the Rosner family and we think you'll agree that they are one of Austria's winemaking elite. Grab a bottle in-store or online in time for the long sun-soaked weekend ahead.

Special thank you to Laurenz Varosky, Dominik Rosner, Robert Herbst and .rosner.wein for the 📸

Another Thursday and another pretty epic lineup for our table of tasters in Tufnell Park.

This tasting was a slightly unusual one: no theme, just a lineup of wines picked out by that all had some personal significance. We tasted our way from Crete to Catalunya, via the gorgeous roussanne Comme un Saphir from Stephane Vedeau at Clos Bellane and the delicate, translucent Wanderer’s Heart from Thorne & Daughters, one of our favourite South African estates.

We popped the corks of a couple of icons too. Raventos’ tiny production of Mas del Serral (100 months on lees) establishes a new ambition for sparkling wine in Catalunya — this was a really special wine for lovers of grower champagne to check out. The immensely rich, polished and hedonistic Valbuena 2016 from Vega Sicilia was a treat but the Edelstone 2005 from Henschke was wine of the night. An explosive wine with huge perfumes of sage and star anise, glossy black fruit and yet succulent, unexaggerated and totally winning.

Of course there was a nebbiolo… the gorgeous Sperino Lessona 2015 which was full of dusky red fruits, sandalwood and nutmeg.

We tapered off with a gorgeous Colheita 2008 from Niepoort. Surely no one makes better tawny port than this great family estate.

Last of all, the incomparable 14 Year Old rum from Doorly’s on Barbados. And it was a big pour!

We’re taking a tasting break in Tufnell Park for August but sign up to the mailing list to find out about new September tastings when they’re released. Link in bio. 📝

A few highlights from a no-holds-barred Tuscany tasting in Tufnell Park last night.

Crowd favourites came down to the legendary Pergole Torte which is unbelievably good in 2019 and a stunning magnum of 2003 Flaccianello which was better than it had any right to be from this torrid vintage. Ornellaia 2006 was luxurious and opulent, just like its price tag. And the Fontodi Vin Santo from 2010 was a beautiful way to finish.

Thanks to all our amazing tasters for turning out! Don’t forget to join our mailing list to be the first to know about new tasting. Link in bio.

We’re celebrating English Wine week with a delicious new addition discovered by Jon, our finance director, who also happens to have an excellent nose for fine wine.

On a sunny site in Kent, Nicholas Hall carries on the farming legacy established by his great-grandfather, Herbert Hall. Using organic practices on their 5-hectare estate, together with the principal Champagne grapes of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier, Nicholas and Kirsty Smith make exceptional sparkling wines - Just ask HRH The Prince of Wales, whose Highgrove brand has its own cuvée!

Unsurprisingly, therefore, described by one wine writer as being "as English as Elgar”, this Brut is part-fermented in tank for freshness and barrel for structure. The result is a distinctive English sparkling wine - appley and crisp with a hint of nettle, alongside a touch of hazelnut and white chocolate. Superbly refreshing and deliciously complex.

It was the runaway winner at last night’s sparkling wine tasting in Greenwich, so pop into one our stores and taste for yourselves.

STAFF PICK: Beaumont Chenin Blanc Hope Marguerite, South Africa 🇿🇦🍋🥐

One of our favourite chenin blancs from anywhere in the world, we had to crack this Hope Marguerite Chenin Blanc 2020 from today for day.

Beaumont Family Wines is located near Bot River in Walker Bay, South Africa. This bottling is named in honour of Sebastian Beaumont's grandmother, Hope Marguerite, and is made from two old vineyards of chenin blanc planted in 1974 and 1978.

Until 1994, Beaumont sold their grapes to the state co-operative, KVW, which dominated the industry. Following Apartheid, the farm started to bottle wines under its own label. In 1999, Sebastian took the lead at the winery following on from his father, Raoul, and in 2004 he made the decision to focus his attention on on chenin blanc over sauvignon blanc and chardonnay. That makes Hope Marguerite the perfect bottle to drink on .

First made in 1997, this is 100% chenin blanc and is fermented with natural yeasts and left to age slowly in older oak barrels to give a transparent yet varietally pure expression of this underrated grape.

The flavour is intense yet refined, with beautful aromas of hazlenut and beeswax emerging alongside ripe pear and red apple fruits on the nose. The palate is expansive and intense but sculpted by its freshness, which offsets the flavours of set honey, roasted quince and delicate toastiness. The finish is long and ravishingly rich.

A brilliant food match for scallops or a grilled sole with plenty of salted butter, this is also a superb alternative to white Burgundy. So there you have it. !

£29.90 in-store and online.

10/06/2022

Here's something a bit special for you.

Fuflus is a red wine from Alto Adige, one of the most northerly regions of Italy. It's named partly after the onomatopoeic sound of the nearby Adige river, and partly in honour of the ancient Etruscan god of wine, Fufluns.

It's made by Vallarom, one of the first organic estates in the area. They have been certified organic since way back in 2004 and we're proud to represent their wines in the UK.

This is from the glorious 2015 vintage and is a blend of 40% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 20% cabernet franc and 20% syrah.

Vallarom describe this as a 'Bordeaux blend, hérmitagé, referring to the widespread practice in the 19th and 20th century of Bordeaux estates blending syrah grapes grown on the hill of Hermitage into their wines to increase their depth and body.

The syrah in this blend adds meatiness and depth, and complements and intensifies the flavours of the classic Bordeaux varieties: blackberry, cedar and green herbs.

Vinified with natural yeasts, this sees a little new oak and extended barrel ageing before bottling. Thanks to a further five years of bottle age, this is now maturing beautifully with flavours of cocoa powder, clove and toast framing the maturing fruit.

Next time you're reflexively reaching for a claret to go with a Sunday rib of beef, give Fuflus a try. You can pick it up for £27.10, in store and online.

02/06/2022

From May to late June the British asparagus season is in full swing, and if we're tucking in at home or at a restaurant, there's a good chance you're enjoying the bounty of the Chinn family of Cobrey farm. Established in 1925 the farm covers 3,500 acres in the Wye Valley, South Herefordshire. While they’re probably one of the biggest asparagus farmers, they’ve been growing vines since 2004.

On what was once an ancient Roman vineyard site, they grow 21 different clones of the three traditional champagne varieties, (pinot noir, chardonnay and meunier). This careful selection of vines is done to best match the unique conditions here. The Black Mountains cause a rain shadow, and a balmy westerly breeze helps bring the grapes to the ideal ripeness for sparkling wines.

Made in the traditional method, the wines age for up to 54 months on lees before disgorgement and release. The cuvées are the Classic brut blend, blanc de blancs, and rosé. Delightfully refreshing and beautifully balanced wines, these are the insider's choice for a Jubilee street party.

The whole Castle Brook range and other selected sparkling are on a 15% for any mixed six deal until Sunday. Swing by the shops and stock up!

01/06/2022

Ahead of the Jubilee weekend, we thought it was only right that we found a good British red to add to our shelves, and this pinot noir from Davenport Vineyards in Sussex certainly fits the bill.

The Diamond Fields vineyard is a south-facing plot (a necessity in such a cool climate region) of sandy clay soils with vines that have been farmed organically since they were planted in 2000.

As expected from a wine produced in the northern outskirts of the wine-producing world, this is an earthy, peppery pinot, but with charming crunchy redcurrant, a touch of vanilla from the 8 months in new oak, and enough tannin to add structure. With only 2,024 produced, this won’t be around for long, so grab yourself a bottle, chill it down a little, hang up some bunting, and enjoy!
