Giving up loads of black raspberries, plums, spice box and garrigue, it hits the palate with an expansive, rounded and ripe profile that just begs to be drunk. I expect it will benefit from a year or two of bottle age and shine through 2025."

At 28 years of age this is just perfect for drinking NOW…

Proprietor Bruno Borie noted this was a somewhat unusual blend this year: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot. After this vintage, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot would no longer be included in the blend. Medium to deep brick in color, the 1995 Ducru-Beaucaillou explodes from the glass with bombastic notes of Indian spices, plum preserves, fruitcake and dried figs with nuances of potpourri, star anise, bouquet garni and espresso. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of exotic spices and preserved black fruits, framed by firm, finely grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing with epic impact and length. Mature and drinking well now, there's still a good 12-15 years of kick left in this thoroughbred.

The second vintage of this wine, the 2018 Chardonnay Powder House comes from eight acres of what are now estate-owned vines planted in 2013 to Hyde Old Wente and Mt. Eden clones on Goldridge soils. The vineyard is located in downtown Forestville, right across from the high school. It bursts with tantalizing notions of peaches and cream, orange sherbet and lemon pastilles giving way to a grounded, serious core of Bosc pears, beeswax and baking bread. Full-bodied with a gorgeous creaminess to the texture, it delivers loads of citrus sparks among the stone fruit background with a lively backbone and very long finish.

Notably ripe but quite fresh aromas include those of spice plum, exotic tea and violet. There is terrific punch to the delicious and caressing middle weight flavors that possess a succulent mouthfeel before terminating in a beautifully long and well-balanced finish. This is an excellent Vosne villages.

Sour cherries, red currants, herbs, flowers, ethereal, balsamic, vanilla and a whiff of menthol. Palate is dry, smooth and well balanced with a nice mix of sour and sweet cherries, herbs,leather, earth, leather, tar and vanilla.
Juicy acidity. Solid smooth tannins.

This one really blew me away.

Domaine Ponsot Saint-Romain "Cuvée de La Mésange" 2017

A beautiful fresh pure citrus and pear nose.
Medium-bodied, with a precise palate of citrus oil, crisp green pear, white flowers and blanched almonds with a lovely pulpy texture, loads of stone fruit notes and nutty complexity, as well as a terrific, saline finish.

Opus One Overture.
This particular release is a blend mainly of the 2011, 2012 & 2013 vintages with very small quantities of 2009 & 2010.
These have been aged in used French wine barrels, giving it additional character and complexity.
Tasted blind this was a huge surprise, with everyone thinking it was an aged bordeaux.
Beautiful aged leather notes on the nose,
with a spice box, espresso and elegant black cherry, red currant and violet.
A real suprise!

Mommessin, Domaine du Clos de Tart, “La Forge de Tart” Morey St. Denis 1er Cru 2004

La Forge de Tart is produced from the Domaine's youngest vines which makes this wine more supple and less concentrated than Clos de la Tart. Pièces (228 litre barrels made from new oak), are used during the 18 month élevage.

A dark ruby color, with a pleasant nose of violets and licorice.
Palette brings cherries and raspberries delivering a nice mix of fruit and savoury elements. Plenty of structure but also has good drive with chewy, rustic tannins on the back end.

Perfect to drink now.

We enjoyed a Bouchard Père & Fils 2011 Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus Grèves Premier Cru this weekend. The “Baby Jesus” as we sometimes calls it, never disappoints and this was no exception. Brilliant color, a hint of stems on the nose, red and black fruit notes, with a long and elegant profile and terrific richness. It is a bit of surprise for this vintage which tends to be lighter and more delicate, this 2011 packs quite a punch.

In the tradition of many great Bordeaux estates, Opus One produces a fine second wine called Overture. Like the introduction of a great musical piece, Overture, the wine, presents elements of the exceptional work itself, although certainly not in its entirety or full complexity.

Produced since 1993, but until recently only available from the cellar door, Overture was created as a result of the highly selective process for Opus One. With meticulous cultivating of every section of the estate vineyard with the attention to detail and singular focus required to produce Opus One. This diligence carries through the extensive blending process, and not all wine-lots from the estate are chosen for the final Opus One blend.

Yet, when these remaining lots are afforded additional time in French oak barrels, coupled with the added flexibility of blending across multiple vintages, the final wine, Overture, achieves remarkable elegance, complexity and approachability.

As a natural extension of the creation of Opus One, Overture’s varietal composition evolves based on the lot selections made for each vintage. Overture reflects the proportion of Bordeaux-heritage grape varieties planted on our estate: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Uniquely, Overture captures the essence of Opus One estate across vintages; therefore the exact blend and cellar approach will always differ from Opus One.
