Happy National Orange Wine Day!

We’re happy to celebrate and recognize this ancient winemaking style with a bottle that we are deeply in love with: Ribolla di Oslavia Riserva 😍🇮🇹

It’s made by following the local winemaking traditions of Oslavia (a tiny hamlet on the border were Italy 🇮🇹 meets Slovenia 🇸🇮): overripe Ribolla Gialla grapes grown on “Ponca” soils are fermented with the skins in large oak vats for a month without any added yeasts/temperature control.

This is a profound wine, with several layers of unique aromas like dried bitter orange peel, dried flowers, anise, white pepper…a multi-awarded, unique wine that speaks volumes of its origins. You’ll find it in our shop (link in bio)!

For this , we have selected 3 expressions of Valtellina wines, each coming from one of the 5 sub-appellations, in order to show you the dramatic differences that can emerge based on vineyard exposure and altitude. All these wines display the unique nuances of Nebbiolo influenced by the region’s mountain climate.

Located a two to three-hour drive north of Milan, is one of the northernmost wine-growing regions of Italy.

The vineyards here are planted along the southern-facing slopes of the Adda river as it flows east to west from the Swiss Alps past the central town of Sondrio toward Lake Como. is the primary grape of Valtellina, known here as

In some ways, this appellation is similar to Mt. Etna, where the fruit expression is richest and ripest at lower elevations. While, at higher altitudes, the wines are higher in acids and more aromatic.

Cultivation of the Pinot Noir grape in the Thermenregion of Lower Austria dates back to medieval times. The Cistercian monks who settled here in the 12th century immediately recognized the value of this extraordinary terroir. Heinrich Hartl III is an exciting and considered young winemaker who produces elegant, individual, and expressive wines in this sun-rich district south of Vienna.
Thisb 2018 Pinot Noir Classic is no exception. Link in Bio!

Fermented spontaneously in open vats and matured for 12 months in stainless steel tanks and neutral wooden casks, the wine bursts with ripe cherry fruit, and subtle smoky notes. Juicy and fruit-forward on the palate with flavors of dark cherries, black pepper, bitter chocolate, and rosemary blending right in. Soft but still intriguing with subtle tannins and medium length. A great way to celebrate the !

16/08/2021

It is part of our mission to walk off the beaten wine path: this is a 100% Limnio, considered the most ancient grape variety ever known: it was first mentioned by Aristotle as the finest grape from Lemnos, one of Greece's larger islands.

2018 Garalis Limnio is the epitome of volcanic island wines: smoky, juicy, and vertical, with notes of iodine, tangerine peel, and bay leaves. A delightful, intriguing red!
Get yourself a bottle: link in Bio! 🇬🇷🍷
Located in the middle of the Aegean Sea, Lemnos is constantly hit by strong winds like the famous Meltemi that bring cooling influences into the vineyards during the growing season, moderating the effects of Greece's hot sunshine and extending the ripening period. This allows the grapes to retain a bright acidity as they develop complex aromatics. Lemnos wines are often bright and fresh. Volcanic soils with low fertility help to stress the vines, lessening vigor and yields and resulting in small, concentrated grapes. Smoky, tangy, salty notes are the classic trademarks of the local wines.

Finding a well-made with a sense of place is no small feat these days, as unfortunately most are mass-produced, dull and frankly fairly overpriced. But we know where to look for the good stuff, and we brought you a craft Prosecco made by the Ceschin Family from their own grapes, grown in the gorgeous hills of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene DOCG (the historical production area Prosecco).
Il Colle is a fragrant and intense Prosecco, loaded with aromas of Granny Smith apple, apricot and jasmine. We fell in love with the persistence of its white stone fruit aromas, which linger on the palate while a zesty note of citrus closes on a clean and dry finish.
Embrace life's everyday celebrations, happy !

Located in a mountainous region just inland from Barcelona, the Priorat DO is only 18 miles from the Mediterranean Sea.
The region is known for its of flat, easily breakable stones made of decomposed slate rich in quartzite - a great terroir for Grenache and Carignan. This famous soil impacts a distinct herbal and mineral character to the powerful, deep red wines of the area. Not very typical in style for Priorat, 2014 Torroja Vi De Vila by Terroir Al Limit is a bright and elegant wine. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented whole cluster with the native yeasts to preserve the true character of the fruit. To maintain the purity and freshness of the aromas, the wine is aged in large, neutral oak vats for 18 months. The result is a wine of great vibrancy and savory character highlighting notes of black currant, Mediterranean herbs, a touch of licorice, and lightly dried floral notes, supported by layers of minerality. Grab a bottle of this bright and elegant expression of Priorat in our e-shop and taste the difference (link in bio).

09/08/2021

Maceration is a handy tool in winemaking that is used to extract phenolics such as color, tannin, and flavor components from the skins of the red grapes, where the majority of the color components are located. For white wine, a short maceration can do a lot aromatically, and it may not affect its color at all. Maceration runs from several hours to a few weeks or even longer depending on the winemaker's decisions, and is based on the intended style of the wine and the grape variety.
Francesco Cirelli, a winemaker at in Abruzzo, makes Trebbiano Abbruzzese that is macerated in clay amphoras for 24 hours before the skins are separated from the juice. The appeal of making skin-fermented wines is the distinctive flavor that can be coaxed from the grape. You can taste the unique selection of Francesco Cirelli amphora wines in our Vintner Discovery Box (link in bio).

The recent flood disaster has had a devastating effect on many German wine producers, particularly those in the Ahr wine region. Our thoughts go to all the growers whose lives and livelihoods, vineyards, villages, and cellars were threatened or destroyed. We encourage you to consider supporting those in need - even if that means buying a bottle of wine to enjoy at home so the demand is there.
Here is the wine from the middle Mosel that we're particularly fond of , but there are so many more out there. Discover something new and support flood recovery in Germany. Link in bio to the donation site for contributors in the U.S.

🌋 Volcanoes are one of the most spectacular manifestations of Mother Nature. It's the raw energy of the earth. No wonder that vines grown on rich in minerals and poor in nutrients volcanic soils, result in more concentrated, structured, and age-worthy wines with a broader range of flavors. They can be fresh and fruity or salty and sturdy but always with vibrancy and energy that makes volcanic wines stand apart from the rest.

In this month's Club, we are featuring wines from both, active volcanoes such as Mt Vesuvius in Campania and Mt Etna in Sicily, and volcanic soils that used to be volcanoes millions of years ago. Join the club today and let's explore together the fascinating world of volcanic wines.

📣 A quick announcement!
Vntners team is in Italy now and will be streaming live from Mt. Etna, Sicily. Tune in tomorrow morning to meet Fillipo Mangone from to find out how he creates his wines on the slopes of an active volcano.

It might be hot outside, but that doesn’t mean red wine needs to take a backseat to beer or some tasteless Sauvignon or flavorless Pinot Grigio. There are plenty of red wines that you can drink slightly chilled in the summer months.
Just stay away from rich, oaky, tannic, boozy reds. That means, Cabernet Sauvignons, Malbecs, and Zins are out but chilling down lighter styles of reds – think low-tannin, fruit-forward wines - can be a great alternative to whites and rosé in the hot summer months.
Here are four red wine examples that make for perfect summertime sipping. Pick a favorite and pull out a red for your next picnic or BBQ party.
1. Lambrusco 27 Brut NV Emilia Rosso
2. Schiava 2019 Alto Adige DOC
3. Rossese di Dolceacqua 2019 Beragna DOC
4. AntonBauer 2017 Wagram, Austria

Ready for some Wine and Cheese this Sunday?
Here are some tips on pairing wine and cheese from and Fiona Beckett :
RED WINE & CHEESE - sheep's cheeses like Pecorino, Manchego, Vermont Shepherd; well-aged cheeses that have a dry, crystalline texture, e.g. Parmigiano-Reggiano, aged Gauda; medium-matured cow's cheese such as milder Cheddar; red-wine washed cheeses such as the Italian Ubriaco and Spanish Murcia al Vino.
WHITE WINE & CHEESE - goat cheese is the white wine cheese par excellence; feta and other white crumbly cheeses, Alpine cheese such as Gruyère, Comté, and Italian Toma; mild and medium-matured washed-rind cheeses with aromatic white wines like Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer.
ROSE & CHEESE - light dry rosés will go well with the same sort of cheese - particularly goat cheese - as a fruity white would. A full-bodied, ultra-ripe Cabernet or Syrah rosé will behave more like a red and are good with sheep's cheeses.
There are countless combinations (think sweet wines and cheese, fortified wine & cheese, etc) that we can't cover in one post, but we encourage you to browse our wine shop and keep on experimenting! Happy !
