Officer Mohamed Said (Melvindale Police Department, Michigan) responded to a call of a suspicious person near a gas station. When he arrived, the person ran on foot. Officer Said chased the suspect and caught up to him. A physical confrontation occurred at which time Officer Said deployed a Taser. During this confrontation, the suspect suddenly pulled out a firearm and began shooting Officer Said. The suspect then got onto a bicycle and fled the scene. Officer Said was pronounced dead a short time later.

The suspect was later arrested. He has an extensive violent criminal history and appears to have been released early from incarceration.

Officer Said served with the Melvindale Police Department for just over a year. He grew up in the community and was well liked and known by all.

James City/County Police Officers (Virginia) responded to a road rage incident where a suspect shot at other motorists. Officers arrived at the suspect's house and were immediately met by heavy gunfire from a rifle. One officer was in this patrol vehicle at the time of this shooting and others on scene were pinned down as the heavy gunfire continued for 5 minutes. Officers could not return fire due to the heavy barrage of shots and they were unclear exactly where the shooter was located initially. After the shooting at officers for 5 minutes, the suspect suddenly surrendered. The patrol car was shot over 100 times. Miraculously, only officer sustained non life threatening injuries.

Deputy Fernando Esqueda (Harris County Sheriff's Office, Texas) was working overtime in the Houston area in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. A call came in from a nearby Little Caesar's pizza restaurant in reference to an employee being assaulted. The suspect went into Little Caesars, became upset that his order was wrong, and began pistol whipping the employee. The suspect left and the employee wrote down his license plate number and called 911.

Using a license plate reading camera system, deputies were able to track down an area as to where the car may be. Deputy Esqueda found the suspect vehicle parked and unoccupied. Deputy Esqueda, being on the Harris County Violent Person Task Force, watched the vehicle and called his team via phone to respond. As he was on the phone with his team, the suspect suddenly ambushed Deputy Esqueda. The suspect shot Deputy Esqueda multiple times. When the other deputies arrived, they found Deputy Esqueda's vehicle to be riddled with bullets and Deputy Esqueda mortally wounded. The deputies placed Deputy Esqueda into a patrol vehicle and transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. At this time, the suspect is still outstanding.

Deputy Esqueda served with the Harris County Sheriff's Office for 5 years and was well revered in the community.

Today, July 4th, Officer Jamieson Ritter (Cleveland Police Department , Ohio) and other officers went to a residence to try and arrest a suspect for a warrant. The suspect exited the residence and quickly jumped on a bicycle as he tried to leave the scene. As officers tried to stop him from leaving the scene, the suspect produced a gun and began shooting multiple rounds at the officers. Officer Ritter was struck by the gunfire. Officer Ritter was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The suspect was arrested at the scene.

Officer Ritter served with the Cleveland Police Department for 4 years and was an Army veteran.

Yesterday, Deputy William Butler Jr. (Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office, Michigan) assisted other officers on a traffic stop. It was discovered that a passenger had a warrant out for his arrest. Deputy Butler and other officers attempted to arrest this passenger but he resisted and began to fight the officers. Officers attempted to use less lethal devices. At some point during the struggle the suspect produced a gun and shot Deputy Butler. The suspect then ran away on foot. Deputy Butler was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Officers found the suspect later and he once again began shooting at officers. The suspect was ultimately killed in the shootout.

Deputy Butler served with Hillsdale County for 12 years and was a military veteran. He leaves behind a wife and 3 children. Deputy Butler is the second officer killed due to gunfire in Michigan this week.

Deputy Brad Reckling (Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Michigan) was working in an undercover capacity looking for a stolen vehicle. He found the stolen vehicle and began following it through Detroit as he coordinated with Auto Theft detectives and officers in the area. As he followed the vehicle, it suddenly stopped and multiple suspects exited. At least one of the suspects began shooting at Deputy Reckling and his vehicle. Deputy Reckling was shot multiple times. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The suspects initially fled on foot but were captured a short time later.

Deputy Reckling served with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office for 9 years. He was a decorated deputy who recently received a Life Saving Award in 2021. He leaves behind a pregnant wife and 3 small children.

Today, Officer Joshua Briese (Gila River Police Department, AZ) and his training partner responded to a disturbance involving a large crowd. As the officers made their way through the crowd, someone began shooting. Both Officer Briese and his Field Training Officer were shot. Four other civilians were also shot. Both of the officers were rushed to the hospital where Officer Briese was pronounced dead. His training officer is still hospitalized in serious condition. One of the four civilians was also killed. At this time, the suspect is still outstanding. The FBI is assisting the Gila River Police Department with the investigation.

Officer Briese was still in field training and had served less than a year with the Gila River Police Department.

Officer Jamal Mitchell (Minneapolis Police Department, MN) and other officers responded to a shots fired call. As he arrived, he noticed one shooting victim. Officer Mitchell began tending to this victim and as he did so he was ambushed by the suspect. The suspect began shooting Officer Mitchell. The officers began returning fire and an intense shootout occurred. At the end of the gunfight, 2 police officers, 1 firefighter, 3 civilians and the suspect were shot. Officer Mitchell was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. One civilian was also killed along with the suspect. The others shot were hospitalized.

Officer Mitchell was well known in the community and received national praise for running into a burning house and saving two elderly people on his third day as a police officer. Officer Mitchell served with the Minneapolis Police Department for 2 years and leaves behind a child and fiance.

Officer Jacob Derbin (Euclid Police Department, Ohio) responded to a domestic call with other officers. A female called for police after her male partner had threatened her and her mother. Officers arrived and were unsure of the suspect's whereabouts. Officer Derbin went towards the back of the residence. As he did so, he was ambushed and shot by the suspect. The suspect then fled the scene. Officer Derbin was rushed to a hospital where he later died. The suspect had a long criminal history and was wanted for violating probation. He was later found barricaded at another location. After a SWAT standoff, he was pronounced deceased.

Officer Derbin served with the Euclid Police Department for 10 months. He was also an Army veteran. He leaves behind his fiance.

Yesterday, Sergeant Bill Hooser (Santaquin Police Department, Utah) and a Highway Patrol Trooper pulled over a semi truck after receiving 911 calls that a man was standing on a semi trailer. This semi truck fled the scene. It went down the road and turned around going the wrong direction on the Interstate (driving south in the northbound lanes).. The semi truck then purposely struck Sergeant Hooser as well as the Trooper's vehicle head on at a high rate of speed. Sergeant Hooser was killed instantly. After the violent crash, the suspect fled on foot. He stole another vehicle nearby. Officers found the suspect several miles away and the suspect engaged them in a high speed chase. The suspect eventually lost control of this truck and was taken into custody. Sergeant Hooser leaves behind a wife and children.

These four law enforcement officials were killed yesterday in Charlotte, NC while trying to serve a warrant on a violent felon. As they arrived they were met by intense gunfire from a high powered rifle. An intense shootout occurred. In total 8 law enforcement officers were shot and these 4 heroes succumbed to their injuries. Each hero has their own specific tribute on this page.

Deputy US Marshal Thomas Weeks (United States Marshals Service) assisted other law enforcement agents with serving a warrant on a subject wanted for possessing a firearm after being convicted of a felony. As they attempted to serve the warrant the agents were met with heavy gunfire from a high powered rifle near a front yard. Deputy Marshal Weeks and several other officers/agents were struck by rounds as they returned fire.

After a lengthy shootout, the suspect was eventually shot and killed. Deputy Marshal Weeks was pronounced dead along with three other law enforcement officials. Deputy Marshal Weeks served over 20 years in law enforcement. He leaves behind his wife and children.

As they attempted to serve the warrant the agents were met with heavy gunfire from a high powered rifle near a front yard. Officer Joshua Eyer (Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, NC) assisted the US Marshals and their task force with serving a warrant on a suspect wanted for possessing a firearm after being convicted of a felony. As the officers attempted to serve this warrant they were met with heavy gunfire near a front yard. They returned fire but multiple officers were struck by the suspect's rounds. Other officers attempted to rescue the downed and injured officers when they also were met with heavy gunfire from a high powered rifle. Officer Eyer was one of the officers shot. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Officers engaged in a shootout for approximately 30 minutes at the scene. During the shootout one suspect was shot and killed.

Officer Eyers would later succumb to his injuries. Three other law enforcement officers also died as a result of the shootout. SWAT teams arrived and eventually took two more persons of interest into custody from the residence. Officer Eyers served with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for 6 years. He was recently awarded the Police Officer of the Month at his agency. He leaves behind a wife and small child.

Officer Kyle Hicks (Corpus Christi Police Department, TX) responded to an apartment where a male and female were arguing on April 20th. Officer Hicks and other officers arrived and made contact with a male suspect. As Officer Hicks spoke with the male he became combative and a struggle ensued. During the struggle the suspect used a firearm and shot Officer Hicks. Another officer on scene returned fire striking the suspect. The suspect died. Officer Hicks was transported to a local hospital. He was placed into critical condition before succumbing to his injuries 4 days later (today). Officer Hicks served with the Corpus Christi Police Department for 2 years and leaves behind a wife and children.

Deputy Tobin Bolter (Ada County, Idaho) made a traffic stop on a vehicle last night. As he walked up to the car the suspect immediately began shooting at Deputy Bolter striking him multiple times. The suspect then left the scene. Witnesses observed this and ran over to help the downed deputy. They called 911 and began to administer CPR. Deputy Bolter was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Officers located the suspect on foot in a residential area nearby. The suspect began shooting at these officers also. These officers were able to return fire, killing the suspect. An officer responding to assist during this incident was involved in a car accident and is hospitalized in serious condition. Deputy Bolter served over 7 years in law enforcement.

Early this morning, Officer Luis Huesca (Chicago Police Department, IL) was driving home in full uniform after his shift in his personal vehicle. At some point while driving, Officer Huesca was shot repeatedly by unknown suspects. Other officers responded to the area after being alerted by "gunshot detectors" in the area. Officers discovered Officer Huesca laying in the roadway. He was pronounced dead a short while later. After shooting Officer Huesca the suspects took his badge off of his uniform and stole his gun before also stealing his vehicle. The suspects are still at large. Officer Huesca served with the Chicago Police Department for 6 years.

Last night, Syracuse Police officers encountered a suspicious vehicle. The officers tried to make a traffic stop on the vehicle when it fled. Officers briefly engaged in a chase with the vehicle before losing sight of it. Officers had, however, gotten the tag number from the vehicle. Officers checked the registration and went to the address the vehicle was registered to.

Officer Michael Jensen (Syracuse Police Department (NY), left photo) and Lieutenant Michael Hoosock (Onondaga County Sheriff's Office (NY), right photo) responded to the registered address with other officers. Upon arrival they observed the suspect vehicle. The officers attempted to make contact with the owner of this vehicle when they were immediately met by gunfire. The officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect. During the shootout both Officer Jensen and Lieutenant Hoosock were struck by rounds. Both were transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead. The suspect was also killed in the shootout.

Officer Jensen served with the Syracuse Police Department for 2 years. Lieutenant Hoosock served with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office for 17 years.

Officer Joseph McKinney (Memphis Police Department, TN) and other officers responded to a suspicious car near an intersection. The officers began to approach the car on foot when the suspects inside began shooting at them. Officer McKinney and two other officers were immediately struck by gunfire. The officers returned fire and the suspects sped off in the car. Officers then engaged in a high speed car chase with the suspects. The suspects eventually stopped and one of them fled on foot. He was apprehended. The other suspect died due to gunshot wounds from the officers who returned fire initially.

Officer McKinney was transported to a hospital where he died. Officer McKinney served with the Memphis Police Department for 3 years and was well liked by many in the community. The other officers were hospitalized. The suspect who died had a long criminal history and was recently arrested in a stolen vehicle with an illegally altered fully automatic firearm. He was recently released from jail after not having to post a bail.

Officer Jonathan Diller (New York City Police Department, NY) made a stop on a vehicle that was illegally parked along the roadway. Officer Diller spoke with a passenger telling him he needed to exit the car. The passenger refused to exit the car and quickly produced a gun. The passenger shot Officer Diller in the stomach. Officer Diller's partner was able to return fire and shoot the suspect wounding him. Officer Diller was transported to the hospital where he died. The suspect had a lengthy criminal record with over 20 previous arrests. Officer Diller served 3 years with NYPD. He leaves behind a wife and small child.

Officer Justin Hare (New Mexico State Police, NM) responded to assist a motorist with a flat tire. As he arrived the motorist (suspect) walked up to Officer Hare's patrol car and spoke to him about the flat tire. Suddenly, the suspect pulled a gun and shot Officer Hare. The suspect then walked around to the driver's side of the car and shot the officer again. The suspect then got into the officer's patrol car, pushed the mortally wounded officer into the passenger seat, and stole the police car. He later dumped the officer's body on the side of the road. At some point Officer Hare pressed his duress signal on his radio alerting other officers that he needed assistance. Other officers began tracking Officer Hare's patrol vehicle and found it crashed and unoccupied nearby. Officer Hare was pronounced dead.

The suspect is still outstanding and has a violent past record to include kidnapping, armed robbery, and fi****ms charges. Ironically, the vehicle which had a flat tire was stolen from another first responder in which the suspect is suspected of murdering in South Carolina.

Officer Hare served with the New Mexico State Police for 6 years and leaves behind two children.

*Share* From the New Mexico State Police: An NMSP officer has been shot and killed on Interstate 40 near mile marker 320. Suspect was last seen wearing a brown hoodie and jacket and is considered armed and dangerous. The scene is still active. Details are limited. Anyone with information is asked to call State Police. Sergeant Thomas Sanfratello (Genesee County Sheriff's Office, NY) was notified of an altercation at a restaurant/bar involving two unruly people. Sgt. Sanfratello and staff began to es**rt a male and female off the premises. As they did so, the female began to physically resist Sgt. Sanfratello. As he tried to subdue the female, the male suspect got involved and began physically attacking Sgt. Sanfratello. Sgt. Sanfratello tried to use his Taser to stop the attack but it was unsuccessful as the suspect continued to violently attack him. During the attack Sgt. Sanfratello became unconscious. Bystanders assisted by stopping the attack and performing CPR. Sgt. Sanfratello was unable to be revived and died at the scene. Both suspects were arrested. Sgt. Sanfratello served over 32 years in law enforcement.

Officer Cody Allen (Independence Police Department, MO) responded to a 911 call. Several civil process servers attempted to serve a notice to a man inside of a residence. This man brandished a gun and shot at the civil process servers. One of the process servers was struck and mortally wounded. Officer Allen arrived and attempted to rescue the wounded process server. As he attempted the rescue, the suspect continued to shoot. Officer Allen was shot along with two other officers during the rescue attempt. Officer Allen died along with the civil process server. The other officers were hospitalized. The suspect was later taken into custody. Officer Allen served over 2 years in law enforcement and leaves behind a wife and children.

Sergeant Nevada Krinkee (Sheridan Police Department, WY) responded to an address to contact a male who had been living in a rental house after he had already been evicted. As Sergeant Krinkee arrived the suspect produced a firearm and shot him. The suspect then fled the scene and barricaded himself inside of a house. Sergeant Krinkee was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. A SWAT team arrived on scene and endured a 30 hour standoff with the suspect. The suspect shot at the SWAT team several times as he brandished a rifle and a shotgun. After many failed attempts to negotiate, the suspect was eventually shot and killed by the SWAT team. Sergeant Krinkee served with the Sheridan Police Department for 6 years and was also a US Army veteran. He leaves behind a wife and child.

Combat Medic/Firefighter Adam Finseth (Burnsville Fire Department, MN) responded to a domestic call with other first responders. As he and others arrived they realized the suspect had barricaded inside the house while holding multiple family members hostage (including multiple children). During the standoff, the suspect began shooting at officers and other first responders from an elevated position with high powered rifles. At one point the suspect had multiple officers pinned down as he continued to relentlessly fire at the officers. Firefighter Finseth and two police officers were killed during the incident. Another officer was shot and injured. The suspect eventually shot and killed himself. Firefighter Finseth was a highly trained medic who was attached to and responded with the Burnsville SWAT team as a paramedic.
