U.S. envoy to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad, who negotiated a deal with the Taliban, has welcomed a prisoner exchange between the militants and the Afghan government as an "important step" toward peace.

"Both sides should accelerate efforts to meet targets specified in the U.S.-Taliban agreement as soon as possible,” Khalilzad said on Twitter on April 13, adding that the exchange was more important than ever with prison populations threatened by an outbreak of coronavirus.

According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Taliban on April 12 released 20 Afghan prisoners in the southern province of Kandahar.

States on the country's East and West coasts are forming their own regional pacts to work together on how to reopen from the stay-at-home orders each has issued to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus.

CORONAVIRUS:

🇺🇸 Images captured by drone show a mass grave on New York's Hart Island, where the Corrections Department is dealing with more burials overall, amid the COVID-19 outbreak in New York City, Friday, April 10.

👉The U.S. is the world’s coronavirus hotspot, with more than half a million of the world’s 1.7 million cases. It is followed by Spain with more than 158,000, and Italy with more than 147,000.

The United States has seen its highest death tolls to date in the epidemic, with roughly 2,000 deaths reported daily for the past four days, most of them in and around New York City.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the U.S. death toll is “an underestimation,” tracking only fatalities that were confirmed in laboratory tests.

Public health experts warned that the U.S. death toll could surge to 200,000 over the summer if unprecedented stay-at-home orders, which have closed businesses and kept most Americans indoors, are lifted after 30 days.

Lacking basic rights, migrant workers are usually the first in the labor force to be hit by an economic downturn. Migrant workers have not only been victims of Covid-19, but vectors, too, creating a new world of risk for a vulnerable population.

The U.S. Senate failed Thursday to pass additional funding to help struggling American workers dealing with the impact of the coronavirus. The attempt came less than two weeks after U.S. lawmakers passed the largest economic relief package in the country’s history.

The measure advanced by Senate Republicans would provide an additional $250 billion for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), a $350 billion program that is part of the broader Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, or the CARES Act.

That $2.2 trillion rescue package was quickly written and passed by Congress late last month, as businesses nationwide dealt with the economic fallout of coronavirus stay-at-home orders.

🇪🇸 Funeral workers, relatives and friends of a person who died of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) attend the burial at the Spanish Muslim military cemetery as the COVID-19 outbreak continues, in Grinon, Spain, Wednesday, April 8.

👉 In Europe, officials told people to stay at home during the Christian world's Holy Week, normally a time for pilgrimages and vacations.

In Spain, where there are more than 152,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases and more than 15,000 have died from the disease, officials have made extra calls on citizens to remain at home rather than heading to the countryside for centuries-old religious processions.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the Netherlands could temporarily close its border crossings with Germany and Belgium over the Easter weekend if there is too much traffic.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed "cautious optimism" about curtailing the spread of coronavirus in her country but described the situation as "fragile."

CORONAVIRUS

🇹🇼 Soldiers wearing face masks amid the coronavirus pandemic attend an address by Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen during her visit to a military base in Tainan, southern Taiwan, Thursday, April 9.

👉 Taiwan currently has just 380 confirmed COVID-19 patients and five deaths despite its close proximity and trade links with China where the pandemic began. But the island and its 23 million inhabitants remain locked out of the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international bodies after Beijing ramped up its campaign to diplomatically isolate Taiwan and pressure it economically and militarily.

Thursday marks 100 days since China notified the WHO that it was dealing with cases of what would later be identified as COVID-19, the deadly virus that has spread to nearly every corner of the world. U.S. President Donald Trump has accused WHO of being too biased toward China and said that the U.N. health agency should have warned of the approaching crisis months earlier.

One of the Trump administration's complaints is the blocking of Taiwan's membership in the WHO.
