WINE OF THE WEEK: 2018 rChardonnay

Varietal: Chardonnay
Region: California, United States

Chardonnay may get a mixed reputation these days, much like today’s polarized world of “love it” or “hate it.” This wine celebrates the varietal’s versatility, complexity, and unique appeal, embodying a refined vision of what makes Chardonnay truly exceptional.

Grapes are sourced from premier California AVAs, including the Sonoma Coast and Sonoma County, creating a diverse profile of fruit. Fermentation occurs at low temperatures to enhance rich, creamy textures, with full malolactic fermentation and bi-monthly stirring for added depth. Aging in a carefully selected blend of American oak barrels provides structure, while partial stainless steel preserves fresh, vibrant notes. After a year in stainless steel vats, the wine develops an additional layer of crisp fruit character before bottling.

This Chardonnay looks like buttery liquid gold and smells like a house party of juicy pineapple, apple and stone fruit. Tasting notes of Meyer lemon, peach and apple with buttery toast. It’s crisp with a super long finish. Pair it with poultry, fish , creamy pastas, and soft cheeses. Perfect to drink now or age for up to 8 years.

Here’s to Chardonnay—an elegant, noble wine worthy of celebration. Cheers!

WINE OF THE WEEK: 2019 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc
Region: Alexander Valley, California

Aged in 50% new and 50% second-use American Oak from the Duncan family’s The Oak cooperage in Higbee, Missouri. Matt Duncan said the Petit Verdot in the blend, of which there is 0.4%, is co-fermented with the Cabernet Sauvignon, intended to bring focus to the Cabernet fruit. A compelling, brooding, muscular rendition of Cabernet from Alexander Valley with gorgeous boysenberry notes, black currants, and rose petals laced with vanillin notes and toasty oak. Medium to full-bodied with black currants, ripe blackberry and black cherry notes framed by velvety tannins laced with that irresistible vanillin note. Toasty oak spices lend a hint of sweetness, balanced by grippy acidity. Long and complex, revealing umami, garrigue, and crushed slatestone on the finish. It’s a terrific wine from the Alexander Valley. Drinking window: 2023-2035.

✨ As we prepare to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Grand Cru Culinary Wine Festival, we’re excited to welcome Realm Cellars.

Realm Cellars is a true story of revival in the heart of Napa Valley. Just 8 years ago, owner Scott Becker and winemaker Benoit Touquette rescued the winery from financial hardship. With its own hillside estate in the prestigious Stags Leap District, Realm also takes a unique approach by crafting wines from premium vineyard sites throughout Napa. This requires trust, respect, and the expertise of winemaker Benoit Touquette, who works closely with top growers across the region to create wines that reflect the diverse terroirs of the valley.

Producing only 4,000 cases annually, Realm Cellars is known for its exclusive offerings, high critic scores, and a waitlist of 1-2 years for their mailing list. ✨ As we prepare to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Grand Cru Culinary Wine Festival, we’re excited to welcome Lucien Le Moine and Rotem & Mounir Saouma.

Founded in 1999 by Mounir and Rotem Saouma, Lucien Le Moine is a small but highly regarded House of Grand Crus in Beaune. Mounir’s journey began in a Trappist Monastery, where he discovered the art of viticulture and oenology, fostering a passion for pure and traditional winemaking.

After formal studies and experience across Burgundy, California, and other regions, he joined forces with Rotem, who brought her own expertise in agriculture and a national prize-winning study on the Côte d’Or. Together, they crafted a winery focused exclusively on Grands and Premiers Crus, building strong relationships with local growers to secure the highest quality grapes. Their small-scale operation allows for meticulous attention to detail and the ability to adapt each year based on the unique conditions of the vintage.

The story of Rotem & Mounir Saouma extends beyond Burgundy into the Rhône Valley, where they have established an estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. While many know them for their iconic Burgundian house, fewer are aware of their more recent venture into Rhône winemaking. Over the years, they have carefully developed their estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with impressive results that reflect both their Burgundian roots and the distinct terroirs of the Rhône. Their work in Châteauneuf-du-Pape stands out for its precision and innovation, offering wines that are increasingly recognized for their exceptional quality and unique expression of the region.

A son of Santa Barbara, Justin Tyler Willet began in 2005 at the age of 24 with a few barrels tucked away in the corner of the Sta. Rita Hills cellar he was working in at the time. It was there, as the assistant winemaker, he honed his approach to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Tyler has rapidly grown from a small boutique project into one of the most well-regarded producers in the Sta. Rita Hills region of Southern California. The winery is known for its impeccable quality, terroir driven Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, sourcing grapes from some of the most prestigious vineyards in the region, including Sanford & Benedict, La Rinconada, and their new estate vineyard, Mae Estate. It has also recently started to produce wine under the Mallea name which focuses on Rhone Valley varietals.

Justin Willett’s winemaking philosophy focuses on crafting wines that express the true character of their terroir with elegance and balance. The wines are aged primarily in neutral barrels, allowing the natural flavors of the grapes to shine through without the overpowering influence of new oak. The cool climate of the Sta. Rita Hills allows the wines to retain a great deal of acidity, allowing them to be aged for a considerable amount of time. Justin’s reputation as a talented and passionate winemaker is further solidified through his involvement in various other prestigious projects including (which focuses on Loire Valley varietals), and now Mallea.

WINE OF THE WEEK: 2018 Pian Delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino

Varietal: Sangiovese
Region: Tuscany, Italy

The Pian Delle Vigne estate is located 6 kilometers southwest of Montalcino. Its name comes from the eponymous area where a characteristic nineteenth century railway station is located. The property consists of 460 total acres, 160 of which are planted to vines with generally a south-western exposure at an altitude of 430 feet above sea level. The estate, since the very beginning, has followed a philosophy based on aging in large casks capable of preserving the exceptional integrity and elegance of Sangiovese. Pian delle Vigne has belonged to the Antinori family since 1995, the year of the first Pian delleVigne vintage.

The nose is a jungle adventure, as sanguine notes of meat and leather intertwine with a thicket of wild herbs, brambles and leaves, and a last hint of wild cherry. The palate teleports to the ice cream parlor on Main Street, serving artisanal, hand-churned mint chip, with a Luxardo cherry on top. A rare combination of extravagant and refreshing.
