🔝Things are looking up!

It may be only Tuesday, but there’s still plenty to be happy about - take a leaf out of this bottle of Ad Hoc Middle of Everywhere’s book.

It’s looking pretty chipper, and I’m not surprised. A handsome Shiraz hailing from sites across Frankland River in Western Australia, its grapes were hand-picked, fermented and aged in a mix of new and old oak for six to eight months, giving it delicious subtle oak complexity - perfect to complement its juicy blueberry🫐 and red cherry🍒 flavours and black pepper notes. Smug little bottle.

Smile, be happy, and pour yourself a glass 😃 🇦🇺

A very happy Bank Holiday weekend to you from Oh Grape HQ! 🍾

I don’t know about you, but I’m going to be working my way through Argentina this weekend (I mean, why not?), starting with these three little monsters…

🇦🇷 Clásico Malbec, 2019 - a smashing fruity Mendoza Malbec from the always dependable crew.

🇦🇷 1300 Merlot, 2018 - cool climate and concentrated Mendoza Merlot made from vineyards situated at over 1,300m above sea level. Delish.

🇦🇷 Torrentés Riesling, 2020 - two of my fave grapes, sourced from Salta, blended into one damned refreshing bottle.

Have a great weekend!

Cheers! Tommy 🍷

☀️ A great day for tasting some WINE!

Back from a tasting with a supplier and managed to bag a couple of the bottles to undertake some more ‘thorough’ taste testing at home, sans the spittoon.

With so many amazing bottles out there, one of the challenges of starting up a new wine business is choosing the wines that make the cut. Decisions, decisions.

Today I tasted a range of wines from across the New World, but I had to bring these tasty two home with me:

🇦🇷 Colonia Las Liebres Bonarda Clasica, 2020 - a 100% Bonarda from Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. What a fantastic introduction to Bonarda this would be. Beautiful colour with black cherry, raspberry, plum and perfumed floral aromas. A lovely rich mouthfeel, but still a delicate and quaffable red.

🇦🇺 Dandelion Vineyards Lion’s Tooth Shiraz/Riesling, 2019 - an almost forgotten but traditional blend of Shiraz (95%) and Riesling (5%) from McLaren Vale in South Australia. Super lifted and fresh aromas from the co-fermentation of the grapes, with lots of juicy red fruit and a touch of spicy oak. Very smooth and balanced, despite its 14.5% ABV.

Hopefully these wines will be winging their way to Oh Grape soon, but in the meantime check out some of the amazing New World wines already available - link to store in the bio☝️

💀 That really is the question.

When you’re checking out a new wine you may read that it has been fermented or aged in oak… and you may be wondering what that even means, and how that will affect how the wine tastes? 🧐

Check out the latest post on the Oh Grape Vine blog and find out… 😃 Link in the bio.

🐴 🇨🇱 Norwegian Fjord horses, in Chile? YUP.

Odfjell was founded by Norwegian, Dan Odfjell. It’s committed to making elegant wines using biodynamic practices. Cover crops and beehives populate the vineyards, while small Fjord horses work the land. Told you!

Odfjell focuses on making wines that are a true expression of the terroir of its vineyards. The low yield vineyards are handled with care and grapes are handpicked to ensure only the best fruit is used.

Here we have Odfjell’s take on Chile’s signature grape with the delicious Orzada Carménère, 2018. Deep red with intense and complex spice and ripe red fruit aromas. Cherries, raspberries, and plums mixed with blackberries and anise. Juicy and powerful with velvety-soft tannins and a long finish. Perfect for a BBQ 👌

🍒 Monday schmonday!

Here’s one to brighten up your week. GRENACHE (aka Garnacha) is one of my favourite grape varieties. It produces such moreish and slurp-able wines. Easy drinking, medium body, lots of texture and juicy red fruit.

Here we’ve got The Other Wine Co’s McLaren Vale Grenache. Red cherry, raspberry and spice. Rich with smooth tannins. Delish.

The grapes are sourced from a dry-grown vineyard in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale where the low yielding 45-year-old vines are planted in predominantly sandy soils.

🤘That’s Friday night sorted.

Gabriëlskloof’s MAGDALENA SEMILLON, 2018.

The first vintage to be labelled as a Semillon, but with 15% of the blend made up by Sauvignon Blanc. A uniquely South African take on a Bordeaux-style blend. Light and pale golden straw in colour, with grapefruit, lime peel, jasmine and spice. Rich, but balanced by lively acidity…

…accompanied by smokey almonds. Because, why not.

🍇 Pinot Noir… nom.

Pinot Noir makes lighter and paler wines than the average red, and they rank amongst some of the world’s most sought after.

Producing seductive aromas and silky body, the grape thrives in cool regions. On the red wine spectrum, expect elevated acidity and bright flavours, leaning towards red berry and herbal flavour/aroma clusters.

Here we have Giant Steps’ Applejack Vineyard 2019 Pinot Noir, hailing from Yarra Valley in Victoria, Australia.

The Applejack Vineyard was planted in 1997 and is situated in the Upper Yarra Valley at higher altitudes of 300 metres above sea level, resulting in cooler growing conditions - ideal for Pinot Noir. The wine was matured for eight months in tight grain French barriques (25% new, 75% old) before being bottled by gravity, without fining or filtration.

Holy mackerel. Perfumed aromas of green bell pepper and smoky red fruits. Well-structured and refined with great acidity and complex, savoury tannins.

🐜 Hey little fella’

Currently loving me some of Lake Breeze’s Bull Ant Cabernet Sauvignon from Langhorne Creek, South Australia. Amazing lifted aromas of blackberries, complemented by a touch of mocha. Rich and smooth with polished tannins and a lovely soft finish.

Langhorne Creek is located south-east of Adelaide and is a premium viticultural region with cooling lake and ocean breezes.
The vines have an average age of 40 years and are cultivated on their own rootstocks in soils that are generally alluvial sandy loam with some parts over a clay base. The Bull Ant on the bottle is a reference to the ants that were discovered in the vineyard when it was first planted. Their propensity for nipping encouraged swift work in the vineyard 😳

Grab a bottle before the ants run away with them all! Link in bio ☝️

👋 Oh hey! It’s nice to get out from behind the camera every so often, right?

My wine journey really began when an ex-colleague hosted a wine tasting at work. It dawned on me, for the first time, that when you drink wine you are tasting not just a delicious glass of fermented grape juice, but a culmination of the history, geography, culture and cuisine of the place in which the wine was made.

Each and every single bottle of wine takes you on a new adventure. I wanted to delve deeper into the world of wine and I signed up for a  course that very day to learn more.

A few years (and many, many glasses of wine) later, with WSET Levels 2 and 3 under my belt, I decided to leave my role as a lawyer to start Oh Grape and to work on completing my WSET Level 4 Diploma studies. The rest, as they say, is history…

Right… now back to my feast. Make the most of the sunshine between the downpours ☔️ guys, get out there and enjoy some wine!

Cheers! Tommy 🍷

🍋 So fresh, and so clean!

You can’t beat an Aussie Riesling. Aromatic with zippy acidity, but softened by delicate lime and stone fruit flavours = a GREAT foodie wine.

Here we’ve got Ad Hoc Wallflower Riesling from produced in Great Southern, Western Australia. Pure, refined and fragrant with flavours led by fresh lemon peel.

The vines for the wine are grown in various sites which are influenced by the warm easterly winds from the Great Australian Bight. The vineyards are situated with a northern orientation to optimise the long sunlight hours, which promotes ripening and maturation of the grapes. Only the free run portion of the juice from selected parcels is used for this wine, to ensure that the elegance and purity of flavour is maintained.

Grab a bottle, you won’t regret it. Link in bio ☝️☝️☝️

👩‍🎨 I know, I know, you’re not supposed to judge a BOTTLE by its cover, right?

But come on. I can’t help but let out a little squeal of delight when I come across wines like those produced by the wonderful in Argentina.

Matías is the son of renowned winemaker Jorge Riccitelli. Having worked at some of the most prestigious wineries in Argentina and several vintages around the world, Matias used his experience, knowledge and passion and set up his own winery in 2009. His vineyards cover 50 hectares located in three selected sites within the premium growing region of Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza.

Oh Grape is lucky enough to stock a few wines from Matías Riccitelli - a trio of Malbecs plus a sublime Torrentés. Go check them out (link to store in bio☝️).

So, apparently dogs have around 300m scent receptors in their snouts vs. our measly 5m, so Moira has been helping sniff out the winning wines in our latest tasting at home. They’ve got fewer taste receptors though so she left the drinking to us… 😬

A fab line up here:

🍇 HAPPY SHIRAZ DAY PEOPLE! 🍇

Today the world recognises this epic grape with the inaugural Shiraz Day.

With its thick skins and love for SUNSHINE, Shiraz (aka Syrah) is one of Australia’s most established and loved grapes. It makes full-bodied and rich wines, with Australian styles being a bit sweeter, riper and almost jammy in flavour compared to the styles typical in the Old World and cooler climates, but still keeps its distinctive spicy aromas.

Think deep colour, some tannic structure and potent aromas and flavours of black fruit, jam, dark chocolate, smoked bacon and black pepper.

Now I’ve tempted you, check out a couple of the great bottles Oh Grape stocks - from the lovely Ad Hoc Middle of Everywhere, Shiraz, 2018 from Frankland River, Western Australia (silky and juicy deliciousness), or if you’re feeling a bit more flush, the wonderful Bachelor's Block Single Site Shiraz, 2018 produced by from Ebenezer in Barossa, South Australia (polished and complex).

👋🇿🇦 Say hi to Momento!

Marelise Niemann is a perfect example of the new breed of South African winemakers: energetic, innovative and incredibly inspirational. She started her winemaking career in 2007 at Beaumont Wines, while keeping travelling and honing her craft around Europe.

Momento is her solo project which began in 2013 in Bot River - merging technical excellence with a real sense of terroir and craft. Incredibly small quantities of wines are produced from dry-farmed, old vineyards, with minimal intervention and all brimming with intense energy, concentration and elegance.

Marelise’s first vintage was two barrels of Grenache Noir and now works with all three Grenache varieties having added Grenache Blanc to the repertoire in 2019. Marelise is passionate about working with grape varieties that are well suited to South Africa’s climate. For Marelise, working with grapes that are well adapted to where they are growing, reducing energy and water input and allowing vineyards to thrive naturally is the way forward.

I fell in love with Momento’s Tinta Barocca back in February last year and knew I had to stock their amazing wines when I finally got my store launched. Check out the delicious 2017 Grenache Noir and 2018 Chenin Blanc Verdelho I’ve been lucky enough to stock at Oh Grape - link to the store in the Bio ☝️

PS, the fab vine drawing featured on Momento’s labels was created by artist Hennie Niemann Jnr, Marelise’s husband - true artistry on, as well as in, the bottle! ❤️

EXCITING NEWS ALERT🥂 🇦🇷 🇨🇱 🇿🇦 🇦🇺 🇳🇿 🇺🇸 🥂

I’ve gone and done it - I have TODAY officially launched Oh Grape!

After months of working behind the scenes (and years of procrastinating in a legal career) I am super proud to finally ‘open the doors’ to my new online wine store.

Oh Grape specialises in serving up delicious wines from across the New World to thirsty wine drinkers in the UK.

I’ve curated a starting line up of special bottles from Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the USA that I think will go down a treat, but watch this space, as I hope to bring you new and exciting wines from other New World regions including from Canada, Ecuador and Brazil.

Come say hola, and find out more at www.ohgrapewine.com.
