If you’ve looked at the radar this evening and see this weird shaped line that looks like rain, but there’s no rain in sight, here’s the explanation. Radar shows something, but it’s not rain, and the type isn’t biological (bats, birds, bugs). It’s actually Chaff! Chaff is tiny glass particles covered in aluminum. They are used by military aircraft, that are dropped by those air craft to fool radar in order to hide aircraft from radar. In this case, it’s been dropped for a military exercise. These exercises happen across the U.S. fairly often. In our Northwest Arkansas coverage area we reported on radar chaffing on November 14th 2023 in Fort Smith Arkansas.
