Fort Tolukko, built in 1522 on Ternate’s east coast in Indonesia, was a Portuguese fortification designed as strategic stronghold to control the spice trade in the Maluku Islands. Its unique narrow shape reflects the local topography, while its Iberian architecture distinguishes it from Dutch forts in the area. Positioned strategically above a reef-free landing site, it initially housed 160 soldiers. Over time, it was occupied by various powers, including the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, British, and the Sultanate of Ternate. Renamed in the late 17th century after Ternate ruler Kaicil Tolukko, the fort was abandoned in 1864 but renovated in 1996 and now serves as a tourist attraction.
