The world's largest maker of latex gloves will shut more than half of its factories after almost 2,500 employees tested positive for coronavirus

Nearly 5,800 workers have been screened so far with 2,453 testing positive, it said.

Top Glove operates 41 factories in Malaysia with many of its workers coming from Nepal and living in crowded dormitory complexes.

The cluster contributed to a record daily high of 2,188 cases nationwide, bringing Malaysia’s total cases to 58,847. The cluster in the Klang area is currently the most active in the country with 4,036 cases.

Top Glove says it produces about 90 billion rubber gloves a year, about one quarter of the world’s supply, and exports to 195 countries. It has seen profits soar amid rising demand for its products due to the pandemic.|

Migrant worker dormitories... they accounted for 95% of Singapore's cases, and a large fraction of cases in the Middle East as well. These people work together and then live together in barracks-like conditions, a dozen or more men in a room with bunk beds and little else, and shared bathroom facilities.

Coronavirus can be transmitted through the air, CDC confirms

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledged Monday that people can sometimes be infected with the coronavirus through airborne transmission, especially in enclosed spaces with inadequate ventilation.

The update to the agency Web page explaining how the virus spreads represents an official acknowledgment of growing evidence that under certain conditions, people farther than six feet apart can become infected by tiny droplets and particles that float in the air for minutes and hours.

Can the coronavirus survive on surfaces?

It is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems likely to behave like other coronaviruses. A recent review of the survival of human coronaviruses on surfaces found large variability, ranging from 2 hours to 9 days (11).

The survival time depends on a number of factors, including the type of surface, temperature, relative humidity and specific strain of the virus.

WaPo has deleted this tweet, which was sent out about an hour after Trump announced to the world he and the First Lady’s positive COVID-19 test.

"The Post has removed a tweet pictured below, which was written Thursday and released through an automated program, because the subsequent news of President Trump’s infection rendered it tasteless."

This is what is the new normal in the Czech Republic. These are Czech news. Everyone is required to leave a house with a face mask on. 😷 There are fines if people don’t wear them. I am thankful for such strict rules. I believe it will help to stop the virus from getting out of control. Czech Republic has so far zero fatalities. Stay safe everyone! 💕

Ali Raja, MD and Shuhan He, MD emergency physicians from Mass General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. We're back to report from the front lines of COVID-19.

I think it’s really important we wear full PPE, which includes gowns, gloves, face masks, and eye shields. The virus has been shown to aerosolize and also be able to spread via our eyelashes. What we recommend healthcare workers do is to have an observer - someone to watch them take on and take off this PPE, since many things often get missed and it’s easy to contaminate yourself if you’re not careful. For example, I may touch my face accidentally while pulling off my mask. It’s like when you’re scuba diving: have a buddy and have a checklist so you don’t drown.

The truth is we’re all rationing right now. Part of the reason that we’re doing this AMA is that we want people to understand that while, yes masks work, healthcare workers absolutely NEED them right now. We see our colleagues across the country getting ill every day - who will take care of the sick patients when all of the healthcare workers are all ill themselves? So /u/Drgrundle we totally agree that we need as many facemasks and N95's possible. To be clear, even at MGH, we are trying to ration and clean and reuse as much as possible, because we are all at a critically short supply as well. It is a frustrating situation.

That's why we're asking all non-healthcare workers, please self quarantine. That is the best protection. The CDC is recommending bandanas, scarves, and other homemade masks if you are able to make them. Try to consider the population as a whole and help us healthcare workers by leaving the disposable N95 masks on the shelves. You really don’t want us wearing homemade ones at work and then taking them from room to room. However, homemade masks (made from teacloth or regular cloth) may still confer a significant degree of protection, and you are likely fine to wear one to the grocery store. These masks likely won’t suffer from the limited supply issue we’re having with manufactured facemasks. We are asking the public to help in this way.

TL;DR Please wear N95 if you can. Otherwise, save, reuse, and frankly we're just all hoping for the best right now

Total Cost of Her COVID-19 Treatment: $34,927.43

When Danni Askini started feeling chest pain, shortness of breath and a migraine all at once on a Saturday in late February, she called the oncologist who had been treating her lymphoma. Her doctor thought she might be reacting poorly to a new medication, so she sent Askini to a Boston-area emergency room. There, doctors told her it was likely pneumonia and sent her home.

Over the next several days, Askini saw her temperature spike and drop dangerously, and she developed a cough that gurgled because of all the liquid in her lungs. After two more trips to the ER that week, Askini was given a final test on the seventh day of her illness, and once doctors helped manage her flu and pneumonia symptoms, they again sent her home to recover. She waited another three days for a lab to process her test, and at last she had a diagnosis: COVID-19.

A few days later, Askini got the bills for her testing and treatment: $34,927.43. “I was pretty sticker-shocked,” she says. “I personally don’t know anybody who has that kind of money.”

Like 27 million other Americans, Askini was uninsured when she first entered the hospital. She and her husband had been planning to move to Washington, D.C. this month so she could take a new job, but she hadn’t started yet. Now that those plans are on hold, Askini applied for Medicaid and is hoping the program will retroactively cover her bills. If not, she’ll be on the hook.

She’ll be in good company. Public health experts predict that tens of thousands and possibly millions of people across the United States will likely need to be hospitalized for COVID-19 in the foreseeable future. And Congress has yet to address the problem. On March 18, it passed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which covers testing costs going forward, but it doesn’t do anything to address the cost of treatment.

While most people infected with COVID-19 will not need to be hospitalized and can recover at home, according to the World Health Organization, those who do need to go to the ICU can likely expect big bills, regardless of what insurance they have. As the U.S. government works on another stimulus package, future relief is likely to help ease some economic problems caused by the coronavirus pandemic, but gaps remain.

Getting hospitalized in the U.S. for COVID-19 may cost thousands. How much of that you'll pay depends on your insurance.
