Set, also known as Seth, is an ancient Egyptian deity and one of the most intriguing figures in Egyptian mythology. He is often depicted as a composite creature with the body of a human and the head of an animal, resembling a donkey or an unidentified creature with a long curved snout. Set is closely associated with chaos, the desert, storms and foreign lands. He has a complex and sometimes contradictory nature and his role in Egyptian mythology evolved over time.

In the early periods of ancient Egypt, Set was considered a benevolent god associated with the desert, which was seen as a place of renewal and rebirth. He was revered as a protective deity who defended the sun god Ra during his nightly journey through the underworld. Set was also associated with storms and his powerful presence was believed to ward off evil forces.

However, as Egyptian civilization developed, Set's image gradually transformed. He began to be associated with chaos, disorder and even evil. Set's rivalry with his brother Osiris is a central aspect of Egyptian mythology. According to the myth, Set murdered Osiris out of jealousy and became a symbol of violence and disruption. Set was seen as an adversary, constantly challenging the order and harmony maintained by the other gods.

In Egyptian mythology, Set's conflict with Horus, the son of Osiris and Isis, is also significant. Set was portrayed as the antagonist in this struggle for power and legitimacy. The conflict between Horus and Set symbolized the eternal struggle between good and evil, order and chaos. Set's actions were often portrayed as destructive and harmful, contrasting with Horus' role as a protector and representative of order.

Despite his negative reputation, Set was not universally condemned in Egyptian society. In some contexts, he was revered as a deity of strength, endurance, determination and protection against dangers and threats.

Ammit
Ammit was a goddess in ancient Egyptian mythology who was depicted as a hybrid creature with the head of a crocodile, the forelegs of a lion and the hindquarters of a hippopotamus. She was often referred to as the "Devourer of the Dead" and was believed to be responsible for judging the souls of the deceased in the afterlife.
According to ancient Egyptian beliefs, when a person died, the heart was weighed against a feather on a scale of justice. If the heart was found to be heavy with sin, it was devoured by Ammit, thus preventing the soul from reaching the afterlife. However, if the heart was found to be light the soul was allowed to continue its journey and enter the afterlife.
Because of her role in judging the souls of the dead, Ammit was feared and revered in equal measure by the ancient Egyptians. She was often depicted on funerary art and in tombs, where she served as a reminder of the importance of living a just and virtuous life.
Although she was a fearsome goddess, Ammit was not considered evil, but rather a necessary part of the afterlife process. Her role was to maintain balance and order in the universe by ensuring that only the pure of heart were allowed to enter the afterlife.
