NEW SELF CARE NON-ALC BEER RELEASE: PAINTED RED
•
Description from the Brewer: Having been added to the brew schedule, and then removed for various time sensitive projects, time...and time...and time again - we’ve been committed to finding a slot for this red to be painted in. The recipe was built around how I feel reds should be brewed, but rarely are.

Brewers are often afraid of crystal malts (“THIS BEER IS OXIDIZED!” scream the uninformed Untappd reviews). But we’re not afraid. We also used pilsner malt instead of the more assertive pale malt, alongside ample amounts of light Vienna malt. We then split crystal malt duties between roasted and dehusked Carafa III and a dash Dark Crystal.

All this adds up to a full flavor that makes you feel like you are drinking a nice dark and rich beer, with the lighter color malts giving a base coat for the red color to dance around upon. The toasty and roasty aromatics from the malt bill also mix very nicely with a quick brush stroke of Cluster hops.

This should hit home if you genuinely miss good red ale, which the NA space desperately needs. This is going to be one you don’t want to miss, so grab yourself some before its gone!

And also, no. We did not photoshop that beer color. We just strategically placed the brewers flashlight behind the glass to show off its beautiful color.

THIS WEEKEND: Come and chat with two of Self Care’s founders Nate and Sara Reilly, who have travelled from Olympia down to Portland to pour tasty samples of Self Care Non-Alcoholic Beer! (yes. we know. we still need to get a newer, less COVID-y photo of ourselves.)

We'll also be sampling two of our newest beers: Super Freak Flag Hazy Double IPA, and Bohemian Pils! Both of these beers just canned this past Monday, and though they were delayed to PDX due to the weather, they should arrive on store shelves next week!

Oops…we did it again…

“No. 1, was Freak Flag IPA - part of the Self Care nonalcoholic line of beers by Three Magnets Brewing of Olympia, this was the best IPA of the class. With a finishing bitterness balanced by a malty sweetness, Freak Flag is slightly bitter and fruity, and comparable to an IPA you would get at a really good brewery.”

This. This is why we don’t make ultra low-calorie NA Beer. We love beer, and want to make the most convincing non-alcoholic beers on the market. As opposed to ultra low-cal NA beer that is essentially beer-flavored seltzer. Non-alcoholic beer, by default, is a healthy alternative to leaded beers. And when they actually taste like real beer, that’s when they’re more likely to be used as a tool to foster healthier relationships with alcohol, whatever that looks like for each individual. So we’re going to keep making deliciousness without compromise.

We were so honored to be asked to help Seattle Musicians Access to Sustainable Healthcare - SMASH reach their fundraising goal for the year, so that they can continue to provide health care for working musicians. Plus it gave us an excuse to think way outside the box, and brew something extra fun (and extraordinarily different) - a bubble gum flavored non-alcoholic beer, brewed with GLITTER! We released this for their big fundraiser concert a couple of weeks ago, A Tribute to David Bowie, and got to hydrate some of our favorite artists as they covered some of our favorite Bowie tunes. The show was freaking incredible! And now, we’re taking the rest of the beer that didn’t get gobbled up at the show, and selling them to y’all, to help raise EVEN MORE MONEY for musicians.

DESCRIPTION: Let’s get the elephant right out of the room. There are numerous styles of festbier. This one is an homage to the mecca that is German malting, brewed with the historic German malt Isaria 1924, the oldest certified German heirloom brewing barley. We can’t imagine this has been brewed with in a non-alcoholic beer before, so that’s cool as hell.

To give the beer a historically accurate recipe, we added in some painfully expensive spelt malt (only the best for you!). This historic grain helps give body and wheat-like flavors, with the added benefit of being more friendly toward those who have bad reactions to wheat. We then sprinkled in just a pinch of Munich malt because, well, "everybody else is doing it, so why can't we?". And just like that - a soft-colored, pillowy, and nuanced malt bill was born. I repeat, its not brown, or orange or copper. Its pale yellow, with a distorted haze from the spelt.

There were a lot of hops we could have used to be true to style, but it seemed fun to put our own riff on it. Perle and Opal hops it is. A Oregon beer brewery has raked in a coveted pair of Red Overalls for their lager skills recently using Perle in German lager, two years in a row I believe (full disclosure, our brewer also has earned himself a pair of those red overalls for a GABF Award winning Czech Pilsner). So, that hop has our attention. All this focus on the details creates our first go at a full-blown, non-alcoholic German style lager, and we couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out.

TASTING NOTES: Soft cracker notes and a mosh pit of floral spice, all with encore-worthy crushability. Drink side by side with the Bohemian Brew to see how similar but different two origins of amazing lager compare!
