Just some short notes on Zinfandel. When the average Joe/Joan thinks of Zinfandel - it is usually the pink and sweet variety… something that the US wine market labels as a “mom wine”. People are quick to forget Zinfandel is actually a black grape variety that has Italian origins, and is also labelled as Primitivo. It is a ripe and bold red, with dark fruit notes and sweet spices. If you are keen to drink a good Zinfandel, rather go for a wine of this nature- more particularly the Klinker Brick Zinfandel. Look for an old Vine Zinfandel from places like Lodi in the US. Old Vines are known for producing more concentrated fruit, which means that the wine is bursting with fruit flavour. It is also gets full marks if it is bottle in the place of origin which is actually the case with this wine, which was bottled in Lodi. This wine is rich and delicious and went down as an absolute treat at a recent tasting event. If you are interested this wine is retailed Lladaff, Cardiff.

What an absolute belter of a tasting. All that is missing from this picture is the welcome drink, being a fabulous cava, as well as a vermut used to close off the evening. It is so much fun picking the wines and hosting an event like this. I love that this is my actual job!!!!! 😀😀😀😀

NATURAL WINE - yes or no? Market trends show that natural wines are on the up - with more health conscious consumers opting for wines containing less nasty sulphites and other odd ingredients used in the fining and filtration of wine. But on my initial search for natural wines when they first started becoming popular, I was disappointed to find that a lot of natural wines or low Sulphite wines did not seem to pass muster or were difficult to find or prohibitively expensive. Fast forward a few years and there are some fabulous examples of natural wines to choose from - one example being this Le Naturel red. It is 100% Garnacha from Navarra in Spain. Expect candied red fruits, bramble and sweet spice. On first taste expect a bit of tannins, but with a bit of decanting this wine was delish! For this and more wines like it - check out the new Wicked Vintner store in Llandaff

On today’s episode of what am I tasting for my WSET diploma today, I finally got a taste of this beauty - the Nautilus NV Brut - Cuvee Marlborough from New Zealand. Of all the sparkling wines I have tasted for my diploma tasting practice, this is the first wine that I concluded was outstanding. The wine is so beautifully complex, with aromas and flavours of baked apple, pear, lemon curd, pastry, honey, cheese and almond. It had high acidity but was well integrated. It had long finish, with the more pleasant and remarkable flavours lingering on the palate. It is so hard to be objective about a wine from a professional tasting perspective when you are literally going nom nom nom during a tasting! 😂

I am having such an awesome day! Just found out that I got a merit pass on the D2 part of my WSET diploma and I just spent a chunk of my day at a trade wine tasting…Ah trade tastings… one of the few times it is acceptable to start drinking wine at 10am. 😂 There are definitely a lot of new additions to our wish list for our new store. Some standout wineries/ producers were + many more. Thanks .

There is nothing sweeter than a taste of home. Even better when shared with a friend. This is the Mont Rochelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 vintage. The Mont Rochelle vineyard has a rich history dating back to the 1600s and is nestled in the hills of Franschoek in the Western Cape of South Africa. The estate has changed hands a few times in the last 20 odd years, but notably it was part owned by Miko Rwayitare at the time this wine was made. Miko was the first black owner of a vineyard in South Africa, which is significant given South Africa’s dark history under the apartheid regime which impeded people of colour from owning farm land, and in particular, vineyard land. The winery was bought out by Richard Branson in 2014, and now a luxury hotel. I understand it still produces a small selections of wines, but seemingly under a different label. So this wine is a little bit of history and very difficult to find in the UK, except if you have a nose for good wine like .iste ! The wine has well structured tannins, dark fruit characteristics and an earthy / smokey character typical of a South African Cabernet that transported me right back home. It was so beautiful it made me a little emotional. Thanks for sharing Bethan!

When I grew up in South Africa, a common phrase bandied about was “local is lekker”. Lekker meaning good or pleasant, the phrase meant that local products are just better, and should be preferred over things from afar. As I have now lived in Wales for 8 years, and I consider myself to be a local, I try to look for good Welsh products whenever I shop. In this case, I have found a great quality Welsh wine that has spun my windmill this evening. It is the Montgomery Winery Rondo, from Montgomeryshire in Wales. Rondo is a grape variety I was not familiar with, but a quick reference check revealed that it is a German red-fleshed hybrid that is perfect for the cooler climate wales. The red flesh of the grape makes a deep coloured wine, which is surprisingly light. It has rich jammy fruits, sour cherry notes and a pleasant earthy quality. Montgomery appears to make a host of wines from interesting grape varieties, so I look forward to seeing more good things from them!

This is the Eshcol Red Blend hailing from the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley in the US. It was love at first sight - who doesn’t love a label with a bit of whimsy 😍 It also helps that the wine is bloody delicious! It is a unique blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. It is pretty high in alcohol (an eye swimming 14.5%) but is incredibly well balanced with the fruiter elements of the wine so it is not obvious. The flavour profile has blackberries, cassis, raspberries, violet, oak and savoury spice. If you like your fuller bodied reds, this is definitely a winner!

In recent years, there has been a decline in the demand for luxury sparkling wines (like champagne) and an increased consumer interest in less expensive sparkling wines. This could be seen in the Prosecco revolution that happened in the US and UK. While you won’t find me in a bar chugging Prosecco, I do find myself happily sampling quirky but quality driven sparkling wines from other regions all over the world. Tonight’s venture involves this Guilera Red Xarella - a Brut Cava sparkling from Spain that is 100% xarel-lo. It is a gran reserva - with a minimum aging of 60 months. It is bright and citrusy (a very pleasant lingering taste of candied lime) with some brioche and autolytic character. I also love the eye catching label, which is an artist’s depiction of a cava nymph, presumably going on a drunk adventure (of which I have had many). A wine like this is quirky and fun and punches above its weight for the price bracket it sits in. It is well worth a visit to . Also in this photo, you might see the lesser spotted wine nerd somewhere in the photo 😂😂😂

Well thank Christ that Dry January is over! I have the absolute pleasure of tasting new wines for a cafe and new little independent pop-up that is opening soon (watch this space). This gem has knocked my socks off. This is the Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé. This is oh so pretty in pink. It’s made using the traditional method (Methode Cap Classique), but is uniquely South African with its blend of Pinotage, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Nero. It is light and elegant with a taste profile of raspberry jam, luscious strawberry, brioche and floral notes. Please give me some more!! 😉

Every so often I buy one lonely bottle of wine left on a bin end shelf, only to find that it is delicious and intriguing and I wish I could just buy so much more. Take this bottle of wine as a prime example of this. This is the 2018 vintage Birichino Grenache. This wine is 100% Grenache made from grapes from old vines, on a Central Coast vineyard and winery that has been in existence for over a 100 years. The wine is made using native yeasts and aged in French oak. It is also unfiltered. It’s rare to see 100% Grenache wine from the US in the UK, and I was a pleasantly surprised by how expressive this wine is. I could clearly distinguish raspberry, cranberry, and sour cherry on the palate, as well as earth, vanilla, cloves, cinnamon, rose petal and dried orange rind. What a treat ❤️👌🏻 🍷

When I was a masters student in law school, I was taught about the concept of “crossing the rubicon” as a step taken which passes the point of no return. In Caesar’s time, it was a bold and definitive step and declaration of war. I can’t think of a better wine to hold the big bold name of Rubicon 👌🏻 The Meerlust Rubicon is a robust and lively Bordeaux blend from Stellenbosch in South Africa and effortlessly rivals some higher-end Bordeaux wines. Expect cassis, dark cherry, plums, earth, pencil sharpening and cigar box. It pairs really well with beef, venison, and lamb. It’s no surprise that this is my Christmas wine year after year.

The husby and I have a tradition of going out for a little pinch of nom and drinks for Sunday lunch. Today we opted for toasties and champagne (It sounds like an odd combination but it is a special kind of NOM 🤤). The Geminae NV Champagne was our drink of choice as it is a beautiful blend lemon curd and brioche and it punches well above it’s weight, given it’s price.
It is currently going for an absolute steal . This is not a sponsored post, but defo a good find

I am in Durban, South Africa at the moment, which is my home town. I ventured into one of my favourite old haunts - Unity Bar Musgrave . While there I tasted this absolute gem of a Sauv. Groote Post Sea Salter Sauvignon Blanc is from Darling but it might as well be from Loire because of it pouilly-fume-esk flinty characteristic. It also has pronounced fruit character of gooseberry, warm citrus, and green apple with herbaceous and saline characteristics. It was absolutely no surprise to me that it retails for about £20 a bottle in the UK. I will certainly be having another one before I go back to the UK!🇿🇦🥰

I did not truly fall in love with Spanish wine until the Viña Ardanza met my lips… My first taster was of 2009 vintage of the Reserva which was outstanding. I had just started working in the wine trade and I had never tasted anything like it. Then I tasted the 2010 Seleccíon Especial which blew my mind 🤯🤯🤯🤯 It is no surprise that the 2010 vintage sold out with the blink of an eye, because it was epic! Then this 2012 Reserva magnum was snug in my wine rack for almost a year before I eventually caved and popped it open. I had won it as a part of a work incentive because I sold a shed load of Vina Ardanza (No surprises there. It is easy to sell a product that you love). But it just reminded me how good this wine is. It’s a classic Reserva style Rioja. Think red cherry fruits, leather and to***co. It just enveloped me in a big warm Rioja hug. Looking forward to exploring future vintages ❤️ 🍷

Gosh, after the week I just had, I would say that this is a welcomed diversion. This is the Ségla 2014 Margaux. Of all the Bordeaux Appellations, Margaux is one of my all time faves. It is has rich dark fruits, cassis, cedar, pepper and deeper leather or smoke characteristics. YUM 🤤 Now to find a book and a comfy chair 🙌🏻

Such a profoundly sad day! We say goodbye to a lioness of good sense, humanitarianism and goodwill. She was a monarch by birth but hell she won our hearts for being a woman of strength, integrity and wisdom. She could also pull off lime and beautiful hats like it was nobody’s business! She also drank some decent wine and whiskey! Here is to her contribution to humanity and to life worth living ❤️
