“But isn’t Sancerre a white wine?”

The Eastern Loire Valley region of Sancerre is famous for their white wines made from the Sauvignon Blanc variety, but the much smaller production of red wines are made from Pinot Noir.

The region’s cool climate & limestone soils, help these wines to have great focus & tension. The wine is a bit like Oscar Wilde: sharp, charming, defiant, expressive, and quite enjoyable.

This Pinot Noir is made by which is one of the oldest Loire Valley wine growing families. They have been tied with the wines of the area since the 1500s & the quality shows.

The small French Appellation of Cour-Cheverny in the Loire valley is one of the last places for the rare grape variety Romorantin.

A cross between the ancient varieties Gouais blanc & Pinot fin teinturie, this variety has some distinct flavor characteristics.

This white wine has the acid of Chenin Blanc, the body of Viognier, minerality of Riesling, & a bit of it’s own flavor profile. Think 💐 + 🍋 + 🪨 + 🍄

From the domaine’s old-vine Gamay Noir on the Hill of Brouilly, this wine has the complexity of the 8 generations that have worked this area & vineyard. Hand-picked, mostly whole-cluster, & aged in large-format neutral oak Foudres. Visiting with this family was truly one of the greatest wine experiences of my life so far.

This one is made biodynamically by & is made from 100 % Veldelho 🤯 It spends 4 years on its lees to achieve complexity & body.

Did you know that Pinot Grigio (grey in Italian)is actually from France? It is called Pinot Gris (grey in French) & naturally mutated from Pinot Noir.

But in Northeastern Italy, in a region called Collio, it achieves one of its best expressions. This is one of the first examples of this grape from Italy that I have fallen in love with!

What’s better in the Summer than Jenny Marie’s] frozen custard?? Jenny Marie’s] frozen custard with dessert wine poured on top!

For first Friday this month from 5-8, we are making mini wine sundaes at Wyn House with Jenny Marie’s custard, and late harvest tokaji wine from Hungary poured on top!

We’ll also have a flight of other wines to taste & bottles to stock up for the weekend.

Bourgogne aka “Burgundy” is the birthplace of the Pinot Noir grape in France. The region has notoriously variable vintages from year to year which means the wines can change drastically from season to season.

Typically the “lowest” tier of burgundy wines, Bourgogne can be sourced from anywhere in the appellation. This wine however is from a tiny parcel (3 acres) located in Volnay. The vines for this wine were planted in ‘63, ‘69, & ‘70.

The wine is perplexingly rich & fresh at the same time. Wild berry fruits, spices, & earth are wrapped in soft tannins & great acidity. Perfect for all the fresh mushrooms coming out of the Gorge. 🌲 🌳

New Wines in the shop!

On the flight today, we have Two new wines for our theme of “Oregon’s old-world inspirations”.

The first is a sustainably farmed Syrah from the McMinnville AVA of the Willamette Valley. makes this beautiful small production Syrah named for the family’s Grandmother Jaunita aka “mama Nita”. This wine is laden with pepper, lavender, and amazing complexity.

The “old-world” Syrah we have is from in the Crozes-Hermitage region of the Northern Rhône Valley in France. The sustainably farmed fruit is hand-picked & fermented in small neutral barrels with whole clusters. This wine is ripe, dark, & velvety. Spicy, brambly & rich texture.

Have you had Crémant before?

What is it you ask? It is the term used for a sparkling wine from France that is made the same way as Champagne, but from other regions of France & often with different grape varieties.

This Crémant is from the Loire Valley & is made from 80% Chenin Blanc, & 20% Chardonnay. It also happens to be made by two amazing sisters, in the winery that their grandmother Marie founded in 1961.
