PRESS RELEASE
November 3, 2022
Woodbine, Georgia
Camden Lawyer Myers Named County Administrator
In another demonstration of grotesque judgment, Camden County Commissioners voted Tuesday night to appoint County Attorney John Myers as Interim County Administrator.
Myers will replace resigned County Administrator Steve Howard effective on November 15, 2022. Deputy County Administrator Shawn Boatright, who was heir apparent to Howard, also recently resigned from Camden County.
Camden County is engaged in multiple legal matters that are or have been, overseen by Mr. Myers in his official capacity as Camden County’s County Attorney. The County website outlines his job description since 2014:
“The county attorney is appointed by the Camden County Board of Commissioners and serves as chief legal counsel to the board in all legal matters. The attorney provides legal advice and representation to the board of commissioners, the county administrator, all county departments, and the boards and committees organized under the Board of Commissioners on matters related to their official responsibilities. Mr. Myers attends all Commission Meetings, attends all Tax Assessors and Planning Commission meetings, and advises all constitutional officers.
“The county attorney manages all county leases and county litigation issues, but does not handle any criminal matters. Duties also include drafting ordinances, resolutions, contracts and other legal documents, handling real estate transactions and performing legal research. The county attorney also acts as the prosecutor for the Magistrate Court for all ordinance violations.”
There is a substantial risk that Mr. Myers' legal representation of Camden County and Camden citizens while he also acts as the employee directing day-to-day county operations and departments of the county as Interim County Administrator, would materially and adversely conflict depending on which title Mr. Myers was wearing in a particular moment. Mr. Myers’ move from contracted County Attorney to Camden County government contract employee requires he resign as County Attorney or refuse the position of County Administrator to avoid anticipated frequent conflicts of interest.
For instance, aside from risks associated with his apparent lack of any experience as a County Administrator, Mr. Myers is presently enmeshed in several lawsuits involving various aspects of Spaceport Camden. It seems fair to ask if Camden County citizens will receive the legal representation necessary to prevent further taxpayer liabilities and losses.
Since it was not stated in Tuesday’s official announcement, we hope that Mr. Myers’ contract as County Attorney will be terminated as soon as possible prior to his assuming Camden County employee responsibilities as County Administrator.
We look forward to the announcement of the person who will be selected to represent the citizens of Camden County in legal matters. And at what cost?
