Have you ever visited Oslo ?

We’re fortunate to have some very good friends in Oslo so we have spent quite a lot time there over the past 10 years or so, but we are also aware that it is not really a hotspot that people think to visit like Paris or London. However, Oslo does have game and plenty to do food and wine wise also. We made a quick trip for a couple of days to enjoy a Christmas feast with friends and didn’t manage make all the spots this time round such as , etc but we have included some images from these amazing spots from our previous trips just to give you an idea. Aside of an amazing lunch and a few choice bottles we just had a good old stroll around the place to get some clean, fresh Scandinavian air in our lungs and walk off the excess Christmas pounds. The opening image is the Norwegian Opera and Ballet which isn’t really our area of expertise but we do love this building and others designed by architects who are based in Oslo. You can also find some insane bottles of flat champagne ( coteaux champenois ) from Jacques Lassaigne ( one of our faves ) and some high grade charcuterie which is always a very nice treat on a day out.

All in all, Oslo is a spot for us that we keep going back to time and again. Just make sure you take your credit card 🙈 💸 - it’s not cheap !

TACO’S ANYONE ?!?!

One of the many things that we love about Spain ( and California / USA ) is the quality level of Mexican food available at all prices. Correct us if we’re wrong ( we’d love to know of any good ones ) but Mexican cuisine was something we never felt was done well in London / UK in the 20 years we lived there so we’ve been taking full advantage over the Christmas period here in Mallorca. So many to choose from but here’s a shortlist that we feel covers the whole spectrum perfectly. First up (first 2 images ) is in Palma. Super delicious, good quality ingredients and a warm friendly vibe and staff. Would recommend anyone to go here for lunch, so good. Next up is which is the hearty hang out with beers, soul Mexican food and constant hip hop. Amazing staff and super reasonable prices. You could spend all day ( and night ) in here very happily. On the completely opposite side of the island is in Sa Pobla, which is only take away at the moment but has to be included as for us this is the most OG hardcore taco on the island. Super high quality ingredients, no frills ( just meat, pickled onion and taco ) with an insanely delicious super spicy black chilli paste. You have to try it to believe it - so good ! And last but certainly not least and without doubt the most Michelin star version of a taco you will get on the island ( bith in terms of taste and presentation- last 2 images ) is in Llubi headed up by the insanely talented - if you want one of these tacos make sure you pre ask / order when you book your table as they aren’t always on the menu. Insane taco’s from an insane restaurant !

I think that’s about it, all bases well and truly covered. Just make sure you drink plenty of Tequila whilst doing the rounds !

January blues ? ?

We haven’t even quit the drink but this is most definitely one of the driest of January’s ever ! !

Happy new year to you all ! Hope you had a wonderful break with your loved ones and Santa delivered you everything you wished for. It was a frantic December for all of us here so we all took a few weeks off to recharge the batteries and get ready for 2023, so we thought we might as well give it a rest on Instagram] also and have a complete break from it all. The problem is that now we are meant to be back in the swing of things and fully moving with it all again, it just feels a bit unnatural and unnecessary. Old and dated somewhat. If we see another picture of a bottle of wine, a vineyard or a hairy farmer on Instagram]. Lol - I’m not sure we can take it.

Anyhow, because it feels this way to us after the break we’re not going to get back into that just yet. Instead we’re just going to just get back into life for the time being and post some things that we’ve been doing and that you may want to do to also to make this January just that little bit more tolerable.

The best of Pouilly-Fuisse !

For those of you that have been following the world of natural wine for a long time and have spent any time in France, then you will know what Maison Valette and the wines they produce mean to the wine community in general and way before natural wine became trendy. These wines sing with purity, verve and a piercing freshness that will beat the majority of Pouilly-fuisse wines at even double their price on any blind tasting.

Pouilly-Fuisse generally isn't and has never been amongst our favourite wines from Burgundy - However, there is always an exception to the rule and this most definitely is it !

The handcrafted Gruner Veltliner is a hit for us all year round here , however, if you prefer your juice Orange then the Schele 2021 will most certainly not let you down.

Cabernet Franc for the season !

Belgian-born Martine Budé has been making wines in Chinon, Loire, since 2015. Budé learned good lessons of vineyard management and yield control from her neighbour, the highly-regarded vigneron Philippe Alliet. The wines she produces are the absolute epitome of elegance.

This Renaissance 2015 is a gentle, delicious Cab Franc with fresh and vibrant red fruit. No capsicum or bell pepper to be found, but plenty of depth from the mixture of soil types from the terroir. The wine was left in concrete for 5 years before bottling, which has yielded excellent results, integrating all the trademark flavours into a nuanced and subtle Chinon red.

A real beauty of a Morgon !

After having graduated from the wine academy in Beaune in the early 1990s, Xavier Benier created a bit of a buzz when he insisted on making unfined and unfiltered wines with little or no sulphur. Today he has made a name for himself in the natural wine world producing excellent wines that are ridiculously good value for money ( even though his neighbours still think he’s crazy ).

This particular wine is the third vintage of this rather complex yet extremely elegant offering made from years old vines ( 60-100 years ) on the ‘Charmes’ plateau. The granite soil produces perfectly perfumed and sophisticated wines with a very high ‘drinkability’. This really is an absolute bargain at this price !

A visit to .coves Mallorca !

Last week we headed out to see what all the fuss was about at the Coves of Campanet restaurant .coves in Mallorca.

Firstly, the location and the view is beautiful so top marks for the setting.

The food menu is concise ( which we prefer ) and has a great line up of starters and then a choice of fish, meat ( or both ) if you wish.

We opted for the lot, starting out with some incredible prawns as well as the fresh squid which were both wonderful.

We then moved onto the restaurants famous prawn omelette cooked in pork broth, which doesn’t look like much on the eye but is actually extremely delicious.

We then went all in on a full fish of the which was amazing paired up with the 2017 Maison Valette, Macon-Chaintre, before tackling a prime rib of the 180 day aged beef.

We finished it all up with a trio of deserts ( as pictured ) and then very happily stumbled home with big smiles on our faces.

Is this the future of Portuguese natural wine ?

Over the last week or so we have opened 11 different bottles from a wide range of producers ranging across big guns, well known, leftfield and hyped as well as some lesser know and more under the radar ones from all across Europe.

This bottle came in as a solid and definite number 2 out of those 11, which should give you an idea of where this wine is at.

Elegant, ethereal and extremely classy, this was a real eye opener that we wished we’d had more of with us as once we got going with it we just kept wanting to go back for more and more.

A super classy wine and in our view a definite producer to watch going forward. Brilliant wine from what looks like a very promising producer. Bravo Antonio !

Riserva Giotto 2019 ! !

We’ve had the privilege of opening some very special bottles over the past few weeks so thought it be a good idea to give you a run down on them and how they are tasting right now.

This is a Carignan like no other due to the volcanic soils the grapes are reared on in the island of Pantelleria. Salinity at the fore before moving through to a wonderfully acidic expression of red fruits and black olives and a finish that lasts a lifetime.

With 300 bottles produced this vintage this is not just a rare gem but also a mind bending experience for anyone that tastes it including the most seasoned of Carignan drinkers.

Is a question that we get asked a lot . .

In a nutshell “low intervention” is the term used within the wine industry to describe wines that are produced with minimal intervention, both in terms of the treatment of the land and fruit in the vineyards ( ie Organic farming methods ) and also at the stage of bottling, with minimal ( sometimes zero ) amount of sulphites ( chemicals ) and / or sulphur added in comparison to conventionally produced wines.

It is for this reason that we decided to call the project when we first set it up way back in 2014.

A must try for the orange lovers !

Such a beautiful wine - An absolute must for the orange wine lovers who are yet to try this. The maceration here is long leaving the tannins deep, complex, mouth-coating and tea-like. You could sit for hours picking out the different aromas in this wine - so much going on. Spices, citrus fruits, flowers etc. A portion of the wine spends time in French barriques which lends an extraordinary opulence to the already generous body. One of the good ones for sure.

YOU REALLY HAVE TO TRY THIS ! !

Every now and then a new producer pops up from seemingly nowhere that hits so hard that you don't know how they managed to stay out of sight for so long. This is one of those times !

If you have been on the infinite road of Nebbiolo ( as we have for the past 20 years ) then you will know that there are a lot more misses than there are hits when unearthing and chasing down the endless bottles and producers of Barolo's, Barbaresco's and Valtellina's etc, but you will also know the feeling of pure joy that you get when you do happen upon a mind bending and perfectly executed expression of the grape. Well, this is most certainly one of those moments. Like a deep rosé in the glass, but with extremely high energy on the palate and aromatics in spades, this Valtellina Rosso from Dislivelli is an absolute peach of a wine that we cannot wait for you to try.

Unfortunately due to the tiny plot and production there are only a handful of bottles available in the UK and we have snatched as many of them as we possibly could for you. But again, we don't imagine they will last long. As with all of our bottles at this price point, the real value will come in the years that follow, so if you can hold off on opening them you will then get to see the full potential of these incredible wines.
