The earliest found evidence of wine consumption dates to 6000 BC in the Caucasus. From there, the vine was tamed by Bronze Age empires including the Babylonians, Assyrians, Hittites and Egyptians. Minoans were introduced to Egyptian winemaking methods around 1800 BC and they spread the fruit over the Aegean, where it was also appreciated by the Mycenaeans.

With the Bronze Age collapse in 1200 BC, it was the seafaring Phoenicians and pioneering Greeks who took the fruit to far shores. They would also encounter wild varieties of grapes, and use the agricultural and fermenting techniques which they had honed over the centuries.

From their example, the Romans spread their appreciation of wine to the new lands that they conquered, many of which would become some of the best wine regions in the world today.
