I filed suit yesterday to ensure that the DuPage County Clerk's office actually follows the law -- nothing more, nothing less.
Every person on the ballot, and every person who wants to vote by mail legally, deserves that.
What is going wrong? As one example, yesterday we saw the Clerk's office seemingly discard entire sets of mail-in ballots that lacked a Post Office postmark, but which did seem to have a Post Office bar code on them, with no notice to the voter. In another case, we saw a mail-in ballot for DuPage County move through the Clerk’s validation process even though it was torn open, sealed with tape, and had a Chicago return address. The Clerk's office said that wasn't enough to suggest vote tampering, or even enough to contact the listed voter to ensure no alterations were made.
If Vote by Mail isn't handled right, you can't ensure that the voter assigned to a ballot is the one who actually votes it by mail. We also discovered that the Clerk’s office has been validating mail-in ballots even though the signatures on the ballots don’t match with the signatures on the voter’s registration.
I wasn't willing to trust accusations or third hand information, especially after the Clerk's office gave a DuPage County state's attorney the impression that that they were NOT doing the application signature comparison on the vote by mail signature issue. I needed to see it for myself. Sadly, it was true. Instead of following the process set out in the Election Code to get identity confirmation from the actual voter, the County Clerk is approving many of these ballots. Everyone deserves better than this.
