Manchester City crowned 2020-21 Premier League champions; City's third title in four years under Pep Guardiola; City add Premier League glory to Carabao Cup success; attention now turns to Champions League bid
Pep Guardiola's side have had to wait to rubberstamp their latest triumph, following changes to the fixture schedule and their own slip-up.

A late defeat to Chelsea last weekend as closest rivals United won at Aston Villa kept City's champagne on ice but they finally reclaimed the Premier League title from Liverpool before kicking a ball again as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were beaten 2-1 on Tuesday after making 10 changes to their starting line-up.

City have now won three Premier League titles and eight major trophies under Guardiola, who last year signed a new two-year contract to remain at the club until 2023.
Pep's timeline
2008-12: Barcelona - 14 major trophies, including treble in first year
2012-13: Sabbatical in New York
2013-2016: Bayern Munich - Seven major trophies
2016-present: Manchester City - Eight major trophies (3x Premier League, 4x League Cup, 1x FA Cup)

Jesse Lingard has revealed he considered taking a break from football during the COVID-19 lockdown last year because of mental health issues affecting him and his family.

“I was going into games happy sitting on the bench and that’s not me,” Lingard told entertainment programme Presenting, adding that opening up about his struggles has helped him revive his career.

Lingard, who joined West Ham on loan from Manchester United in January, has thrived at the east London club under manager David Moyes as they aim to secure a Champions League berth.

What has Lingard said?
The 28-year-old admitted his mother’s depression impacted his own mental health and he considered taking “time out” of the game.

“Not quit football, just have a time out really,” he said. “I was going into games happy sitting on the bench and that’s not me.

“I was telling my brother the other day: ‘Remember when I was happy sitting on the bench and all this?’ I didn’t want to play because my mind wasn’t there, I wasn’t focused at all.

“I was thinking about other things and obviously bottling it all up; trying to play football, you can’t do it.”

Lingard added: “Through the years we had the help for (his mother), but even just for me it’s hard to bottle things up.

“It feels like you’re not the same person. I felt like I wasn’t Jesse Lingard. Even in football matches, I felt like the game was just passing me by, like I just didn’t want to be there – it was crazy.

“So, I opened up to United and told them what I was going through, what my mum was going through and they’re always there to help.”

How has Lingard performed at West Ham?
Lingard joined West Ham on loan for the rest of the season in January having made only three appearances to that point in 2020-21, all in the domestic cups, for Manchester United.

He had not played a single minute in the Premier League for his parent club but made an instant impact at West Ham, scoring twice on his league debut in the 2-1 win against Aston Villa.

The midfielder has added another seven to his tally as West Ham continue their admirable push for European football.

His form has also seen him return to the England after almost two years for the March internationals, and the 28-year-old is in strong contention to be part of Gareth Southgate’s squad for this summer’s European Championship.

European Super League: All six Premier League teams withdraw from competition
Manchester City were the first club to formally pull out after Chelsea had signalled their intent to do so by preparing documentation to withdraw.

The other four sides - Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham - have all now followed suit

The 12-team Super League was announced on Sunday to widespread condemnationManchester City confirmed they have "formally enacted the procedures to withdraw" from the Super League.

Liverpool said their involvement in the proposed breakaway league "has been discontinued".

Manchester United said they had "listened carefully to the reaction from our fans, the UK government and other key stakeholders" in making their decision to not take part.

Arsenal apologised in an open letter to their fans and said they had "made a mistake", adding they were withdrawing after listening to them and the "wider football community".

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said the club regretted the "anxiety and upset" caused by the proposal.

English football's 'big six' were part of a group, also containing Spain's Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid and Italy's AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus, that announced plans to form the breakaway league, which they hoped to establish as a new midweek competition.

It was condemned by fans, football authorities and government ministers in the UK and across Europe by Uefa and league associations.

Around 1,000 fans gathered outside Chelsea's Stamford Bridge ground before their game against Brighton on Tuesday to protest at their club's involvement.

Chelsea have yet to release a statement confirming their withdrawal, though BBC sports editor Dan Roan reported earlier on Tuesday the Blues had begun proceedings to pull out of the proposed tournament.

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who was involved in the Super League discussions, has announced he will step down from his role at the end of 2021.

Leading players at some of the six clubs signalled their disapproval of the planned breakaway league.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson said on social media his side's "collective position" is they do not want the Super League to take place.

"We don't like it and we don't want it to happen," read a message that was also posted by many fellow Liverpool players.

After City confirmed their withdrawal, England winger Raheem Sterling posted: "Ok bye."

Uefa had hoped to stave off the threat of a European Super League with a new 36-team Champions League, which was agreed on Monday.

In announcing their proposals for a Super League that would eventually comprise of 20 teams, the 12-club group said the reforms did not go far enough.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who was named as the ESL's chairman, said the competition was set up "to save football" because young people are "no longer interested" in the game because of "a lot of poor quality games".
