South Sudan: New Security Chief Accused of Corruption and Nepotism
Juba, South Sudan – The newly appointed Director-General of the Internal Security Bureau, General Akec Tong Aleu, is facing serious allegations of corruption and nepotism.
Despite publicly vowing to combat corruption within the security services, General Akec, according to leaked information, has allegedly engaged in widespread nepotism, appointing his relatives to key positions within the oil sector, revenue authority, and other crucial government departments.
The allegations include:
Nepotism: The appointment of numerous relatives, including children and in-laws, to lucrative positions in key sectors of the economy.
Fire and Replace" Policy: A systematic dismissal of individuals in key positions, allegedly to be replaced with the General's relatives. This is exemplified by the case of Lang Deng Maluil, an employee at DAR Company, who was detained and dismissed to make way for General Akec's in-law.
Suppression of Dissent: The detention of journalist Emmanuel Monychol Akop, editor-in-chief of the Dawn Newspaper, and alleged plans to seize the newspaper, raising concerns about freedom of the press.
These actions have reportedly sparked outrage within the government and raised concerns about the erosion of good governance and the rule of law in South Sudan.
President Salva Kiir has reportedly issued a directive halting further changes in the oil sector, indicating a recognition of the gravity of the situation. However, the extent to which the President will address these allegations and hold General Akec accountable remains to be seen.
