Since the early 90s, the nuns of Monastero Suore Cistercensi have organically farmed 12 acres of vines in Vitorchiano, about ninety minutes north of Rome in the Lazio district. In the early 2000s, with the assistance Giampiero Bea of Paolo Bea, the sisters began to hone their craft and find a much larger audience for their unique wines, all while maintaining an exceptionally low-tech, hands-off approach to winemaking. Their harvests are only done by hand (with all of the nuns at the convent sharing in the labor), and the fermentations are always spontaneous. They use only estate fruit, working mostly with Malvasia, Trebbiano, and Verdicchio — as well as small amounts of Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, and Merlot — all grown on volcanic soils. Five wines this year (no ciders, so get them while you can). While I become more excited to taste the wines from Erik and Benford at wines every year, this is the one I can’t wait for: 2022 Petit Verdot. A grape they’re excited to work with. A grape you don’t often see by itself.

From Monterey, California, both 2019 vintage.

We’ve got wines from Corsica, we’ve got wines from Texas, we’ve got it all! If you haven’t tried ‘Wee Chef’ from Alta Marfa, you’re missing out! Chardonnay (they get these grapes from NM) with lots of pretty tropical notes on the nose turns into minerally, citrus and orchard fruits on the palate. Quite an experience, and absolutely delicious.

Once a year, we get our delivery of Frank Cornelissen’s Susucaru. It’s a field blend of red and white grapes from Mt. Etna, the active volcano in Sicily.

Over the years, Frank has painstakingly discovered different plots and sites on the volcano that express the mountain’s terroir in their own way. He does arguably the best job at painting us a picture of the volcano through his wines.

The Susucaru, his entry level bottling, is a great way to get introduced to Frank and the volcano.

People clamor for this year round, but it’s here now and won’t be soon.

They’re back!

Come grab a bottle of everyone’s favorite Canary Islands wine!

Envínate, or "wine yourself" from the team of friends who went to university together to study winemaking, then formed a winemaking consultancy which evolved into Envínate.

They focus on exploring distinctive parcels mainly in Ribeira Sacra and the Canary Islands. They make pure and authentic wines that express each parcel in a clear and concise manner.

No chemicals are used in any of the Envínate vineyards, all parcels are picked by hand, the grapes are foot-trodden, and the wines are fermented exclusively with wild yeasts.

These are some of the most exciting and honest wines coming from Spain. Grab one while you can!

João Pato (aka “Duckman”) was one of the first farmer-winemakers to bottle his own wine in Bairrada in the 1950s. His son, Luís Pato was one of the first independent Portuguese winemakers to bring his wines to the United States. Luís’s daughters, Maria and Filipa both make wine too!

Luís Pato ‘Rebel Red’ is not what you’d expect from Baga - with soft tannins and elegance, this drinks more like Pinot Noir than Nebbiolo. Give it a try today!
