Easter is a great holiday and I think most of us can agree that one of the best parts of it is… the chocolate! But have you every wondered where this delicious treat originated? Chocolate’s 4,000-year history began in ancient Mesoamerica (present day Mexico). This is where the first cocoa plants were found. One of the earliest civilizations in Latin America, the Olmec, were the first to turn this plant into chocolate. However, it wasn’t the sweet treat we know it as today. Chocolate was used during rituals and in their medicine and was used without any additional sweeteners. Centuries later the Mayans praised chocolate as the drink of the gods. The Mayans are, who we believe, our word for Chocolate comes from. They called their foamy cocoa beverage ‘xocolatl’ which means bitter water, and bitter it was! The cocoa bean was later used by the Aztecs as currency in the 15th century. In the early 1500’s chocolate made its way to Spain. They made a chocolate drink, but instead of drinking it bitter, they added sugar and honey to neutralize the naturally bitter taste of the cocoa beans. In the early 1600’s when the French king married Anne of Austria, the daughter of the Spanish King Phillip III who brought chocolate into the rest Europe. For nearly two centuries chocolate remained a treat primarily for the wealthy in Europe. It had to be made by hand and was very labor intensive and rather expensive. However, the Industrial Revolution was coming and that was going to change things! In 1828 the chocolate press was invented. This device allowed roasted cocoa beans to be squeezed into cocoa butter, which left a very fine powder behind. When this powder was mixed with liquid and poured into molds it would harden into a delicious edible chocolate bar. From then on, the production of chocolate has become a worldwide endeavor, with new variations being born every day! #throwbackthursday #throwback #history #historyofchocolate #chocolate #xoxolatl #sweets #learnsome
