Keeping re**er trailers, and the cargo they carry, cool is critical during the summer. Consistent inspections and preventive maintenance are key to ensuring your refrigerated fleet maintains equipment uptime.

With rising temperatures, the stakes are higher for fleets transporting perishable foods and sensitive pharmaceuticals. TRU breakdowns can result in not just a late load, but a lost one.

“If the re**er fails in the summer months, maintaining the desired setpoint becomes increasingly challenging due to higher ambient air temperatures, potentially leading to spoilage or damage to the cargo,” said Greg Schueller, District 6 service manager for Thermo King.

DPF systems are not for dummies, so we wrote a blog for beginners that want a better understanding of their semi-truck's DPF system.

How Does Your DPF System Work Inside Your Semi-Truck?

Trap and Collect Particulate Matter: The primary function of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is to trap and collect soot and other particulate matter produced during the combustion process.

Ash Accumulation: Over time, even after a forced regen, some particulate matter remains in the DPF as ash. Ash is non-combustible and cannot be removed through regeneration.. The OTR Diagnostic app can monitor in real time you're soot level letting you know when that level is high.

Regeneration: Over time, the trapped particulate matter accumulates in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), leading to reduced exhaust flow and potential performance issues. To prevent this, DPF systems have a process called regeneration. There are two main types of regeneration:

Passive Regeneration: This process typically happens during highway driving when the exhaust system reaches the required temperature.

Active Regeneration: In cases where passive regeneration doesn't occur frequently enough (e.g., during short city trips), active regeneration is initiated by the vehicle's computer.

If neither active nor passive regenerations are successful, a forced regeneration may be necessary. This can be done using the OTR Diagnostics app directly from your phone. These types of dealer level commands are just one of the many reasons semi-truck drivers are choosing OTR Diagnostics over OEM software.

If your forced DPF regen lasts closer to an hour or continues beyond that, it likely suggests that your exhaust temperatures are not building up high enough to successfully burn off the soot collected in the DPF and that the truck is still trying to bring down those soot levels. Attention Truckers! With the solar eclipse happening today, here are some tips to be prepared.

Over 3.7 million individuals are anticipated to journey across states from Texas to Maine to witness this celestial phenomenon, which means traffic congestion is inevitable. State transportation departments are advising heavy-duty vehicle operators to steer clear of the roads during the event to avoid potential collisions.

You should plan your routes accordingly and consider alternative travel times if possible.

Also, keep in mind these important safety tips:

Keep headlights on
Put the sun visor down to block your view of the sun
Do not wear eclipse glasses while driving
Do not try to photograph or video the eclipse while driving
Do not pull over to the side of the road, highway, or interstate to view the eclipse
Exit the roadway and park in a safe area away from traffic to view the eclipse
Be mindful of pedestrians who may be walking around with their eyes on the sky
Stay informed, stay cautious, and enjoy the view!
