It was my second-night shooting Speedway at IMS. It was in April 1980, and after the first night, I knew things were crazy there. Before the races on this night, I was advised to be in the infield at intermission. Leni Faas was also summoned to the infield for a match race. However, once he got there, he was greeted by a woman Bruce Flanders referred to as “Wonder Woman.” She then serenaded Leni, singing, with a tambourine and a small horn. Needless to say, he was kind of embarrassed and was lucky he had his helmet on.

In these spaces, we talk a lot about the amount of dirt on the original IMS and the great racing it produced. Well, there was another side to it. If you were starting off the long yardage, you better have stacked your goggles with extra tearoffs. The amount of DG would change brightly colored leathers and helmets to a murky brown. In the case of this photo, Dave DeTemple is covered head to toe with the wet stuff. As you can see, he had to get rid of his goggles when he ran out of tear-offs.

Nor Cal friends Mike Faria and Steve Lucero coming off turn four at IMS in 1985. They came south full-time in the early 1980s (I believe 1982), and it definitely kicked up the competition levels on all of the local tracks. Photo #11111.

Memories of the 1981 Spring Classic at IMS

Many years ago, in the golden age of Junior Speedway, two young and enthusiastic riders, Greg Hancock and "Rocket" Ronnie Correy, were preparing to race at the 1981 Spring Classic at the original IMS. At that time, no one could have predicted that these young hopefuls would eventually become international Speedway stars. Their journey from promising kids on the track to accomplished men off the track is nothing short of inspiring.

The Beginnings of Speedway Legends:
Hancock and Correy were no ordinary teenagers; they possessed an extraordinary talent and an unparalleled passion for Speedway racing. The event provided them with a platform to showcase their skills and determination. Racing at IMS was not just about competing; it was about learning, growing, and pushing the boundaries of what they could achieve.

The Thrill of Dirt Racing::
One of the defining aspects of IMS racing that enthusiasts often reminisce about is the sheer amount of dirt on the track. While some might tire of hearing it, the extensive dirt coverage made for some of the most thrilling and exhilarating races. The photo from the event, with dirt piled up against the base of the turn four wall, is a testament to the track's unique and challenging conditions. Riders had to navigate the dirt with precision and skill, making every race a spectacle to behold.

Daytime Racing and Photo Opportunities:
Another remarkable feature of IMS races was daytime events, which created unparalleled photo opportunities. Promoter John LaDouceur, along with his family, and track man Rick "Dr. Dirt" Sanderlin, provided a sensational track surface that was perfect for capturing the action. The combination of a superb track and daytime lighting resulted in stunning photographs that captured the essence of Speedway racing.

From Boys to Men:
As the years passed, Hancock and Correy continued to hone their skills and make a name for themselves in the world of Speedway racing. They transitioned from promising young riders to seasoned professionals, earning accolades and respect from fans and fellow racers alike. Their journey was marked by dedication, perseverance, and an unwavering love for the sport.

Greg Hancock: A Speedway Icon:
Hancock's career is nothing short of legendary. With multiple World Championships to his name, he has cemented his place as one of the greatest Speedway riders of all time. His journey from the dirt tracks of IMS to the international stage is a story of hard work, resilience, and an unrelenting pursuit of excellence. Beyond his racing accolades, Greg is known for his sportsmanship and his contributions to the Speedway community.

Ronnie Correy: The Rocket's Ascent:
Correy, affectionately known as "Rocket," also carved out a remarkable career in Speedway racing. His nickname was well-earned, reflecting his speed and agility on the track. Ronnie's achievements in the sport are a testament to his talent and determination. Like Greg, Ronnie's journey from the IMS dirt tracks to international fame is an inspiring tale of dedication and passion.

The Legacy of IMS:
The original IMS holds a special place in the hearts of Speedway enthusiasts. The track's unique conditions and the legendary races it hosted have become an indelible part of Speedway history. LaDouceur and Sanderlin played pivotal roles in creating a racing environment that was both challenging and thrilling. Their efforts ensured that IMS was not just a track, but a breeding ground for future Speedway stars.

A Dream Come True for Photographers:
The combination of a well-maintained track and daytime racing at IMS was a dream come true for racing photographers. The lighting conditions and the dynamic action on the dirt track provided countless opportunities for capturing stunning images. These photographs not only documented the races but also captured the spirit and excitement of Speedway racing.

Conclusion:
Looking back at the 1981 Spring Classic at IMS, it is clear that this event was more than just a race. It was a formative experience for young riders like Hancock and Correy, who went on to become international Speedway stars. The unique conditions of the IMS track, the dedication of promoters and track managers, and the unforgettable photo opportunities all contributed to the magic of that era.
As we celebrate the achievements of these riders and the legacy of IMS, we are reminded of the enduring appeal of Speedway racing. The story of Greg Hancock and Ronnie Correy serves as a powerful reminder that with passion, dedication, and hard work, one can achieve greatness both on and off the track.

April 1991 at Speedway USA in Victorville. Great people in this photo. From left to right, the "Godfather," Harry Oxley, Shirley Inman, Marilyn Cirello and Tom Cirello. High Desert in April could mean some cold, cold temperatures. Tom is cooking up some grub, and I am sure the others are staying close to stay warm.

Sidebar on this story. Sadly, Shirley Inman passed away a few years ago. She, and her late husband, Bob, were loved by everyone in the sport. The Inman name is still huge in the Speedway with son Kelly now being the long time promoter of Industry Speedway. Photo #11103.

16/01/2025

Costa Mesa Speedway has seen its fair share of exhilarating moments and unforgettable riders, but few incidents stand out as vividly as the wild get-offs that have become legendary among enthusiasts. One such memorable moment is encapsulated in this photo I shot of Anthony "Bonsai" Ellinor coming off turn four and heading toward the front straightaway crash wall. In this astonishing shot, the only part of Anthony's body touching the motorcycle is his hands. Hanging off the left side of the bike is pulling his right hand and making it grab more throttle. That caused the rear tire to dig into the surface even as he was being thrown off. This image remains etched in my mind as a testament to the unpredictable and thrilling nature of speedway racing.

Last week, I posted a photo of Keith "Snakeman" Larson exiting his motorcycle on the high side. Among the responses to that post was a comment from a Facebook user named, “Bonzai KoolKat.” He recalled that I had some photos of him having a similar get-off. Intrigued, I clicked on his Facebook profile picture, which showed him on a motocross bike with the #98 plate. A quick check confirmed that he used to race with rider number #198 on his leathers. I sent him a message, and he confirmed that he was indeed the same person I remembered.

Bonzai, now retired from the Naval Air Systems Command, has since settled in Arkansas. These moments and stories are what make Costa Mesa Speedway a cherished venue for racing aficionados. The excitement, the danger, and the camaraderie among riders and fans create a vibrant tapestry of memories that continue to captivate and inspire. As we look back on these incredible feats and the riders who performed them, we celebrate the spirit of speedway racing and the enduring impact it has on all who witness it.

16/01/2025

This week’s “Wheelie Wednesday” photo features one of the greatest riders in the history of American Speedway, “Boogaloo” Bobby Schwartz. The track was on the Imperial Valley Fairgrounds during the annual Californian Mid-Winter Fair. The race was the “Denny Pyeatt Memorial,” paying homage to one of “Boogaloo’s” good friends.

On this night, the track developed a rut that was also serving as a launching pad. This is actually a post-wheelie photo. The rut acted like a pogo stick and shot him skyward. If you take a close look, you can see his rear tire is not in contact with the track. Bobby did a great job regaining some control when the bike returned to Earth. He did hit the deck but he quickly bounced up unscathed.

It was very rare to see Bobby out of his familiar Speedway form. His front wheel seldom left the ground, and his body rarely touched it.
