Legends of Costa Mesa Speedway: Larry “Supermouth” Huffman and Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine

Celebrating the Unique Personalities of a Renowned Speedway

The Costa Mesa Speedway, a track with a giant, worldwide reputation, has been home to many memorable personalities over the years. Among them, two figures stand out not for their prowess on the fire-breathing 500cc Speedway Motorcycles, but for their larger-than-life personas and contributions to the spirit of the venue: Larry “Supermouth” Huffman and Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine who began entertaining the fans in the 1970s.

Larry “Supermouth” Huffman

Larry Huffman, affectionately known as "Supermouth," is a name that resonates with fans of motorcycle racing far and wide. His booming voice and enthusiastic commentary were a staple of the Costa Mesa Speedway experience. Huffman's unique ability to engage the crowd, provide insightful commentary, and amplify the excitement of each race made him an irreplaceable part of the speedway's identity.
Huffman’s journey to becoming a renowned announcer was marked by his passion for motorsports and his flair for performance. His talent for capturing the essence of the races and conveying the exhilaration of the moment helped to elevate the entire experience for spectators. It was not just about watching the races; it was about feeling the adrenaline, the tension, and the triumphs through Huffman's dynamic narrations.

Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine: The Entertainer Extraordinaire

While Huffman energized the crowd with his voice, Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine captivated them with his infectious energy and unique antics. Gene's presence at the Costa Mesa Speedway brought an element of fun and unpredictability that was cherished by fans of all ages. Known for his dance moves, crowd chants and his good-natured rivalry with the drag truck, Gene added a whimsical touch to the high-octane environment of the speedway.
Gene’s performances were not limited to the confines of the track. He became a beloved character, known for his humor and charm. His ability to engage with the audience, make them laugh, and create unforgettable moments made him a fan favorite. Despite not being a racer himself, Gene's countless laps on foot as he raced against the drag truck are etched in the memories of many who frequented the speedway.

A Lasting Legacy

The contributions of Larry “Supermouth” Huffman and Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine extend beyond their roles at the speedway. They embody the spirit of Costa Mesa Speedway—a place where passion, entertainment, and community converge. Their legacies are a testament to the fact that being a part of the show at Costa Mesa was not limited to wearing leathers, a helmet, or riding a 500cc motorcycle. It was about being part of a vibrant community and creating lasting memories.
If there is ever an American Speedway or Costa Mesa Speedway Hall of Fame, the inclusion of Huffman and Gene as first ballot inductees would be a fitting tribute to their impact. Their stories remind us that the heart of the speedway is not just in the races but in the people who bring it to life as well.

The Essence of Costa Mesa Speedway

Costa Mesa Speedway is more than just a race track; it is a cultural hub where fans, racers, and entertainers come together to celebrate the thrill of motorcycle racing. The speedway’s reputation has been built not only on the prowess of its racers but also on the distinctive characters who have left their mark on its history.
As we reflect on the contributions of Larry “Supermouth” Huffman and Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine, we are reminded of the diverse ways in which individuals can influence and enrich the sporting world. Whether through electrifying commentary or spirited dance moves, these legends have shown that there are many ways to be a part of the rich tapestry of Costa Mesa Speedway.

History and Evolution of Racing at Farmer’s Fairground and Perris Auto Speedway

The races at the Farmer’s Fairground in Hemet always provided photographers with excellent shots, showcasing intense racing among notable racers, such as this action-packed shot that features Kelly Moran, John Foster, Mike Bast, and Dennis Bransford. The track, although temporary, was utilized at least twice, hosting races both during the day and night. Despite its temporary status, it featured a substantial amount of dirt.

In the late 1980s or 1990, the Farmer’s Fair relocated to Perris. During the first year at the new location, I had the privilege of announcing the inaugural motorsports event—a Speedway race where Ryan Evans emerged victorious. Following a couple of years of racing during the fair, Brian Church, with the assistance of Rick “Dr. Dirt” Sanderlin, constructed a speedway track at the fairgrounds. Named Lake Perris Speedway, it operated on Thursday nights from 1991 through 1994.

In 1995, the speedway track was replaced by a new quarter mile oval venture undertaken by Jesse Dean at the same spot. Unfortunately, Dean’s project was short-lived, lasting only a year. In 1996, the renowned Kazarian family, known for their involvement in sprint car racing, built the high-tech Perris Auto Speedway—a banked half-mile clay oval. This state-of-the-art facility remains operational today on the site of the former Lake Perris Speedway.

Since its inception, I have had the good fortune to work for the Kazarian’s at Perris Auto Speedway, initially as an infield announcer and backup announcer to Bruce Flanders. From 1999 onwards, I've been serving as the main announcer and PR person, witnessing the rich legacy of racing at this remarkable venue.

Ron Blanton and Tim McCasland off the line at Ridgecrest in 1983. One or two years after this photo was taken, Ron was involved in a violent crash at Ventura. The most violent speedway motorcycle crash I witnessed in person.

A rider in front of Ron did a 180 coming off turn two. Facing oncoming traffic, when the rider's hand came off the throttle, the rear tire hooked and flew into the air. On the fly, it hit Ron in the head and cleaned him off of his bike. It looked like he was seriously injured and he spent the night or a few days in the hospital. Amazingly, he only suffered a serious concussion and whiplash. Photo #11151.

Ole Olsen at the 1985 World Team Cup at Long Beach Veterans Stadium

The 26th World Team Cup, which was held at Long Beach Veterans Stadium in 1985, was a historic and thrilling event that etched itself into the annals of Speedway racing. This event marked the first of two occasions the race was hosted in the United States, and both were at Long Beach.

Key Highlights

The event saw the participation of four top Speedway nations of that time: Denmark, England, Sweden, and the host nation, the United States.

The Teams
Denmark: Erik Gundersen, Hans Nielsen, Tommy Knudsen, Bo Petersen, and Preben Eriksen.
USA: Lance King, Bobby Schwartz, Shawn Moran, John Cook, and Sam Ermolenko.
England: Kelvin Tatum, Phil Collins, John Davis, Richard Knight, and Jeremy Doncaster.
Sweden: Jan Andersson, Per Jonsson, Pierre Brannefors, Jimmy Nilsen, and Tommy Nilsson.

A Night to Remember
The race attracted a sellout crowd of 18,000 hardcore Speedway fans, and a reported 4,000 other spectators were turned away at the ticket window. Those lucky enough to secure entry witnessed an electrifying meeting.

In a peculiar opening heat that King won, only two riders finished. Collins being disqualified for a tapes violation and Petersen falling. Denmark's Tommy Knudsen won heat two against Doncaster and Cook. Shawn Moran secured a win for the USA in heat three by defeating Nielsen. The first round concluded with Bobby Schwartz thrilling the crowd by besting Gundersen in heat four, putting the USA ahead with a score of 10-7.

Neck and Neck
From there, the lead shifted back and forth between Denmark and the USA. Denmark triumphed in eight of the final 12 heats, while the USA clinched the remaining four. England managed three-second place finishes, and Sweden placed in the runner-up spot twice.

This photo features the first "Great Dane" in Speedway, three-time World Champion and 1985 team manager Ole Olsen, jumping for joy in front of the massive crowd as Denmark clinched the title.

The Final Standings

The intense competition culminated in Denmark securing a decisive lead in heat 12 and finishing with 37 points. The USA followed closely with 35 points. England accumulated 13 points, and Sweden ended up with 10.

The 1985 World Team Cup at Long Beach Veterans Stadium was a testament to the skill, strategy, and sheer excitement of Speedway racing, leaving an indelible mark on all who witnessed it.

Rick Miller, shown here at an IMS Spring Classic just ahead of Bobby Schwartz, was always one of my favorite riders. Good rider and a super fan friendly guy. I always enjoyed talking with him, his mom, and his dad. All super people. Rick signed with Coventry in 1983 and stayed there through 1992. He became a Bees fan favorite and spent his entire British League career with the West Midlands team. He also spent two seasons with Omarna in the Swedish League. Rick rode in a pair of World Finals. 1990 at Odsal and 1992 at Wroclaw. He has several medals from World Team Cup competitions. When he was done with Speedway, Rick became a stuntman in Hollywood and he recently became a grandfather for the first time.
