Our Story
In April 1973, James and Betty Spearman opened the first Mr. Knickerbocker store that is located in the shadows of Tillman Hall, Clemson's main administrative building at the time. Originally, a clothier for men, Mr. Knickerbocker underwent a change in 1974 that paralleled the rise of Clemson football to national prominence. During this time, we filled a vital niche in the community by selling Clemson clothing and gifts. In 1977, our store expanded. We were given the name "World's Largest Suppler of Clemson Sports Wear and Gifts". In 1981, the College Avenue store in Clemson expanded a third time to include even more retail space. We added a second College Avenue store specializing in Fraternity and Sorority apparel in 1987. We recently transferred our catalog to the Internet for more comprehensive and timely listing of our merchandise. We have items to please almost any Clemson fan. Call, visit us on the web, or come see us in person to see what we can find for you! Do you want to know how we got our name? It was actually part of a logo developed even before the store opened. The logo featured a man wearing knickers and leaning on a cane - hence the name Mr. Knickerbocker. Our store opened and the name has become synonymous with our company throughout the Clemson family.
