TELEGRAPH ALERT: Jimmy Buffett's Hemisphere Dancer Grumman Flying Boat Removed from Universal Studios Orlando for Refurbishment

Statement from Margaritaville:
We all need a vacation, even the Hemisphere Dancer. 🛩️

She is out for a much-needed respite but will be back to dazzle CityWalk Orlando at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville next year.

The Grumman HU-16 Albatross seaplane was manufactured in 1955 and was used by the U.S. Navy for several years. Buffett purchased and restored it in 1995, renaming it the Hemisphere Dancer. Buffett’s adventures in the plane include the incident recounted in the song “Jamaica Mistaica.” On January 16, 1996, Jamaican police shot at the Hemisphere Dancer because they thought it was smuggling drugs. Buffett, his wife, two children, U2’s lead singer Bono, and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell were all on board but no one was hurt. The Hemisphere Dancer is also featured in Buffett’s autobiography, “A Pirate Looks at Fifty.” The memoir chronicles Buffett and his family flying around the Caribbean, Central, and South America for his 50th birthday.

Jimmy Buffett Flips Grumman Flying Boat off Nantucket

NANTUCKET, Mass., Aug. 26 1994-- Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett escaped with only minor injuries after his seaplane crashed moments after taking off from the Massachusetts resort island of Nantucket. Police said the performer known for 'Margaritaville' and other pop hits was treated at a local hospital and later left the island on a charter flight.

Buffett, 47, a licensed pilot and frequent visitor to Nantucket, was taking off alone when the plane's pontoons apparently struck a wave about 3 p.m. EDT Thursday, causing it to nosedive into about 4 feet of water at the west end of the island, the Federal Aviation Administration said. 'The weather was good, and he's very fortunate,' said FAA spokeswoman Mary Culver. Two fishermen in a passing motorboat pulled Buffett to safety after the singer managed to punch a hole in a window and climb out of the vintage, nine-seat plane, which was left upside down in the water. A giant crane was brought in to retrieve the aircraft Friday. The plane, built in 1946, will be taken to a local airport and examined, the FAA said.

Telegraph Rewind: Jimmy and Ellen with our Merch!
Well, as the news of Jimmy's passing sets in, we start thinking of memories that hit close to us. The one that sticks out for me was a phone call I received one afternoon about 5:00 pm from a producer of the Ellen DeGeneres show in 2009. She said that they saw our Parrotfanalia on our website and wanted to place an order to display our parrothead items for the taping of an appearance of Jimmy Buffett on the show the next morning at 10 am...in California! Well, it's actually 5 O'clock here in Florida! So, I went into the warehouse and shipped out our parrothead hats, beads, flip flops, leis, grass skirts, and pretty much everything we had to drop at the Fed Ex hub at Tampa Intl Airport. Fed Ex had just started business express overnight with delivery by 8 am. With the order I sent our ultimate velour parrothead hat as well, and told her, I don't think that you'll get him to wear it, but this would be cool if you could get him to put it on. Well, a couple of weeks later, we received a production video as promised and this still photo of Jimmy and Ellen actually wearing a parrothead hat that was in our warehouse 15 hours earlier! Jimmy thought it was a hoot and played along with the parrothead madness. They put our website on the credits of the show and we sold out of all of our parrothead hats and most of our parrotanalia! We placed a reorder and took every parrothead hat they had in stock and then we sold out of those in no time at all.
Jimmy had a great sense of humor and loved his Parrothead Phlock. He had an amazing following of generations of fans with kids that grew up with his music and enjoyed the island vibe and escapism that only Jimmy could deliver. In celebrating Jimmy Buffett, we're not just honoring a musician, but an iconic cultural influencer who created a lifestyle. His ethos of relaxation, laughter, and enjoying life's simple moments will continue to inspire and bring solace to generations. So, here's to the son of a son of a sailor, who taught us that changes in latitudes result in changes in attitudes. The horizon may seem endless, but Buffett's imprint on our hearts is eternal. Sail on Jimmy, you will be missed by many and remembered thru your music for generations to come.

TELEGRAPH ALERT: Sail On Jimmy!
This is a day you would never think or hope would come. Maybe a surfing accident, flipping the flying boat, or even taking an extra step off the stage, but Jimmy passed at home with his family last night. Here is a statement from Radio Margaritaville:
“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs. “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”
I like many of you, was a fan before there were "Parrotheads" and I'm still growing older, but not up. It's a sad day, but a happy day to celebrate a life well lived. Jimmy offered a way of escapism thru his music and we live vicariously through his adventures. Let's all be the people our parents warned us about and keep living our lives like a song. So, lets fire up our blenders today, put our flip flops on, maybe a grass skirt and toast a frozen concoction to the man who, as he once said, "was foolishly spending our money"! And we loved it! Sail on Jimmy, thanks for sharing your adventures!

Telegraph Alert: Jimmy Buffett Plays Surprise Performance After Hospitalization
Great news, Jimmy is back out on stage! From US Today:
Jimmy Buffett sings that life is “more manageable when thought of as a scavenger hunt as opposed to a surprise party,” but that didn’t stop him from surprising an audience over the holiday weekend.

The singer-songwriter made an impromptu appearance Sunday afternoon at Sunset Cove, a waterfront bar in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, bringing the crowd to its feet screaming when he walked out.

Mac was in the middle of singing “It’s Five O’clock Somewhere,” and when he gets to the lyric “At a moment like this, I can’t help but wonder what would Jimmy Buffett do,”....Buffett himself showed up with an answer!
“How ‘bout I play it for you,” he said, picking up a guitar.

The singer-songwriter made an impromptu appearance Sunday afternoon at Sunset Cove, a waterfront bar in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, bringing the crowd to its feet screaming when he walked out.
How Jimmy Buffett pulled off his surprise show with Mac McAnally
So how did the surprise performance happen?
A few hours before the show, McAnally told Sunset Cove owner Mike MacFarlane that Buffett wanted to "crash the party," MacFarlane said. After being "under the weather" and off the road, Buffett was "itching to get back on the road," MacFarlane said.

So Buffett hopped on a flight from Long Island with his daughter, and MacFarlane, whose 50th birthday happened to be the day of the show, met him at the airport.

"Nobody had a clue," MacFarlane said. "I didn't want a surprise party for my birthday, but in reality, I did have one. The surprise was just for everyone else."

Buffett played a half-dozen songs, including "A Pirate Looks at Forty" – which he changed to 50 in a nod to MacFarlane's big birthday.

"You can't write a check for what happened," MacFarlane said. "It's a full moon tonight, and the stars aligned yesterday."

Jimmy has cancelled this weekend's show in Charleston due to an illness needing "immediate attention" and is hospitalized in a Boston Hospital. We know Jimmy has had some health issues over the past year and we do send our thoughts and prayers for a full recovery. He is 76 years young. Here is his statement:
