Known as "The Run for the Roses" due to the blanket of roses draped over the winner, the Derby has a rich history dating back to 1875. The race itself is a 1.25-mile (2.01 km) long, Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses, and it's run on a dirt track at Churchill Downs.

It's beginning to feel like Spring in Myrtle Beach, SC!!! Which means it's almost time for Spring cocktails. Today, we highlight one of our favorites, the Classic Mint Julep!

To make a classic mint julep, you'll need:

Ingredients:

2 oz bourbon whiskey
1/2 oz simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water, heated until sugar dissolves, then cooled)
Fresh mint leaves
Crushed ice
Instructions:

Begin by placing several fresh mint leaves (about 8-10) in the bottom of a julep cup or a highball glass.

Gently muddle the mint leaves to release their aroma and flavor, being careful not to tear them too much.

Add the simple syrup to the glass.

Fill the glass with crushed ice, packing it down gently.

Pour the bourbon over the ice.

Stir the mixture well to combine the ingredients and chill the drink.

Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

Optionally, you can also add a straw for sipping.

Enjoy your refreshing mint julep!

The name "Four Roses" has an intriguing origin rooted in both history and romance. Legend has it that the brand's founder, Paul Jones Jr., was captivated by a beautiful Southern belle. In the late 19th century, he proposed to her, and as a token of his affection, he presented her with a corsage of four roses. Inspired by this romantic gesture, Jones named his bourbon "Four Roses" as a tribute to his love.
Over the years, the Four Roses brand has become synonymous with quality, elegance, and the timeless charm of Southern hospitality. The name continues to evoke images of romance and sophistication, making it a fitting emblem for a whiskey cherished by connoisseurs worldwide.
