The Glass Fire erupted on September 27, 2020 and has moved rapidly across northern Napa Valley, burning structures at some of the region’s most celebrated wineries. Here’s a list of the wineries that have been confirmed to have sustained damage so far.

Posted • I’ve posted quite a bit about the decisive importance of viticulture and winemaking this year, but here are some thoughts on how the physical characteristics of vineyards in Burgundy—in this case, Meursault Rougeots and Chevalières—shape the styles of wine they produce. We were still figuring out the microphone when this was made, so expect better sound in future installments.

Posted • Communal caricatures—buttery Meursault, muscular Pommard, elegant Chambolle, etc—still exert a powerful influence over how many wine lovers think about Burgundy. In this video, at the top of the slope in Meursault, I question why we expect wines from vastly different sites that simply happen to fall within the same administrative boundaries to share many of the same properties, and explore the origins of the impressively durable stereotypes that adhere to the Côte d’Or’s various villages. I conclude by arguing that the largest denominator of terroir is not the commune but rather the climat.

Tricks of the trade, lesson 1.

- Problem: corked wine
- Reaction: grrrr 😖
- Solution: cellophane
- Theory: the polyvinyl chemical composition of plastic wrap attracts the 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (TCA) molecules that cause the stench.
- Result: tonight I very much enjoyed the bottle I couldn’t drink from last night due to TCA taint.
- Behind the scenes: left corked wine in bottle overnight. Next day took a 2’ stretch of cellophane, crumpled, decanted wine and introduced cellophane. Left in wine from breakfast to dinner time. Voilá...no more TCA taint.
- Pay it forward.

99 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

All the superb and dramatic complexity that this displayed from barrel has made it into bottle as an extremely ripe and fantastically broad nose soars from the glass, merging seamlessly into dense, pure rich and powerful flavors that are opulent, sweet and dripping with so much extract and sap that the combination stains and saturates the palate on the hugely proportioned yet impeccably balanced finish that is so long that it doesn't seem possible. Given how many reference standard vintages Domaine Ponsot has produced of the Clos de la Roche over the years, it would be presumptuous to anoint this as the best ever but if it isn't, it will certainly take its rightful place among the very greatest. In sum, a 'wow' wine that makes you shake your head in sheer amazement. However be aware that this is a buy and forget wine as it will require at least 15 years to shed its considerable tannins and it will see 50 years without difficulty. (1/2008) /// Sold one today...
