One of the world's most unlikely skyscrapers really does seem to be happening. The near-megatall Legends Tower in Oklahoma City now has "full funding" in place from developer Matteson Capital and formal approval from the city's planning authorities to build to an "unlimited height".

The skyscraper is set to stand 1,907 feet (581-meters) above the relatively low-rise state capital of Oklahoma in the midwest, eclipsing the height of New York's One World Trade Center to become the tallest building in the United States, and the tallest in the world outside Asia.

Take away the metric system and you realise that the height equates to 1,907 feet — a nod to the year that Oklahoma was granted statehood.

Theoretically such a project in a comparatively under-developed region that's infamous for being the heart of America's "tornado alley" would face a barrage of obstacles on its path to becoming reality. It would almost inevitably find itself at some point consigned to the long archive of ambitious architectural projects that never ended up being built. But, for now at least, Legends Tower appears to be moving seamlessly toward the start of construction works.

Designed by AO architects, the tower is due to rise as part of a new mixed-use development called the Boardwalk at Bricktown that will include hotels, commercial, retail and residential spaces. It's hoped the development will boost growth and drive further high-rise construction in the years ahead. In past comments to other publishers, AO has explained that the tower is partly being designed in response to Oklahoma City’s growing population. The city’s current tallest skyscraper is the 257-metre Devon Tower.
