IMPAC+ Philly Official Statement on Pulse Nightclub Massacre:
Hello Friends,
The Massacre last Sunday morning at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando where 49 of our LGBT brothers, sisters, and allies were killed by a hateful terrorist, has struck us all in a profound way. May we always honor and remember those we lost. As we each grieve and try to make sense of it, we may take comfort in the strength of our IMPAC+ Philly community. Tomorrow is our monthly happy hour and we hope it is a chance to celebrate being us. We will get together as we always do, talk about our feelings among friends, and not be afraid. Some of our members may wish to pass on happy hour for personal reasons, and IMPAC+ Philly will plan a non-alcoholic event soon. In moments like this, we must care for our brothers in recovery or those who just could use a little support. If you have friends with whom you have not spoken in a while, make sure they are well. Look out for one another.
Sunday’s attack impacts the mission and values of IMPAC+ Philly as a social group. In the coming days, our leadership team plans to meet with Gayborhood bar owners to discuss our concerns with security and how we could partner to make the Philadelphia LGBT community safer in public spaces. Specifically, IMPACT+ Philly asks that they make an ongoing commitment to increase security at their venues, including the use of metal detectors. We invite our members to join us and share why these measures are important to us. Even in these darkest of times, IMPAC+ Philly stands for positive change and is empowered as a community united.
Also, if anyone needs any resources or counseling support, Mazzoni Center has provided this brief list of providers that may be of assistance. Mazzoni Center's Open door program is also providing space for crisis counseling over the phone, and on a drop-in basis.
In solidarity,
Impac+ Philly
