Did you know the Vitola is a general name for the specific size and shape of a cigar. A vitola can also be referred to as the cigar 'format'. While there are standard and generally accepted vitola names, like Robusto which measures 5"x50rg, manufacturers often create their own unique vitola names for their brands.

How to train your palate.

Focusing on flavors is the most important thing you can do to train the palate. Smoking a lot of ci**rs won't help you identify flavors if you don't pay attention to what you're trying. When I'm smoking with friends I can't identify the subtleties of a cigar as well as when I smoke just for a tasting. If I focus on the cigar, a few draps with attention help me to identify more flavors.

The first cigar of the day has much more flavor than the second or third. If you are interested in cataloging and identifying flavors, it will be with the first cigar you smoke that day where you will find them best. When you smoke the second or third (or more), it is difficult to separate the flavors from the previous cigarette.

The best pairing to identify flavors is water or even with soda (without flavor). Any other pairing can alter the flavors or even amplify them, but the water keeps them as they are.

Try and smell everything, always. Do you know what the freshly cut grass smells like? Do you recognize the smell of the sea when you get to the beach? If any of those aromas appear in a cigar, I think many of us could identify it because we recognize them. If you want to develop the palate, you have to increase your catalog of aromas and flavors. Dedicate yourself to savoring what you eat; if you have spices at home, give it a taste and appreciate the aroma of each one. Do it as many times as necessary until you can identify them without reading. Having a catalog of flavors and aromas, being able to differentiate and describe them are essential to be able to determine what you feel in a to***co.

Cómo entrenar tu paladar.

* Enfocarte en los sabores es lo más importante que puedes hacer para entrenar al paladar. Fumar muchos ci****os no te ayudará a identificar sabores si no le prestas atención a lo que estás probando. Cuando estoy fumando con amigos no llego a identificar las sutilezas de un cigarro tan bien como cuando fumo solo para una cata. Si me enfoco en el cigarro, unas cuantas caladas con atención me ayudan a identificar más sabores.
* El primer cigarro del día tiene mucho más sabor que el segundo o el tercero. Si te interesa catalogar e identificar sabores, será con el primer cigarro que te fumes ese día donde mejor los encontrarás. Ya cuando te fumas el segundo o el tercero (o más), cuesta separar los sabores con respecto al cigarro anterior.
* El mejor maridaje para identificar sabores es agua o incluso con soda (sin sabor). Cualquier otro maridaje puede alterar los sabores o incluso amplificarlos, pero el agua los mantiene como son.
* Prueba y huele todo, siempre. ¿Sabes cómo huele la grama recién cortada? ¿Reconoces el olor del mar cuando vas llegando a la playa? Si alguno de esos aromas aparece en un cigarro, creo que muchos podríamos identificarlo porque los reconocemos. Si quieres desarrollar el paladar tienes que aumentar tu catálogo de aromas y sabores. Dedícate a saborear lo que comes; si tienes especias en casa, dale una probada y aprecia el aroma de cada una. Hazlo tantas veces como sean necesarias hasta que puedas identificarlas sin leer. Tener un catálogo de sabores y aromas, poder diferenciarlos y describirlos son esenciales para poder determinar lo que sientas en un tabaco.
