Ok, it’s just about game time if you’re hosting Thanksgiving this year. It’s a colossal cooking holiday, with many dishes and many decisions about oven time, platters, turkey thermometers, soup or no soup, and guests who might be vegan or vegetarian. To name a few things to obsess about.

We have just about everything you need right here at the general store, saving you a trip into town and the big grocery store parking lots that can be a pain to navigate at holiday time.

Let’s look at your shopping list from our locally sourced products: Sweet potatoes, russet potatoes, red potatoes, fingerling potatoes, butter, cream, and half and half. Sour cream and buttermilk, too. Fresh organic cranberries for making your own, or our Five Berry sauce made fresh on our farm by farmer Jan Johnson. Pomegranates, Medjool dates, quince paste, pistachio nuts, assorted charcuterie for an appetizing board, and fresh honeycomb from our farm bees.

We are now taking pre-orders for Thanksgiving pies created by our in-house executive baker, Deb Bernardini.

This year, we have 2 choices: Pumpkin pie with a candied pecan flourish on top; and cranberry-apple pie with colorful candied cranberries. Our pies are handmade from scratch using locally sourced ingredients.

Deb is making limited quantities, so please be sure to reserve in advance. All orders must be received by Tuesday, Nov. 19.

The pies will be available for pickup on the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving, this year on Thursday, Nov. 28. Price is $30 each.

You can reserve by stopping by the store, calling us at 413-229-2663, visiting our website at www.themillrivergeneralstore.com/pies, or tapping the link in our bio.

We are still taking Thanksgiving turkey pre-orders - but they are selling fast. Sustainably raised on the fields of our nearby Mill River Farm, these choice birds are in high demand, and we anticipate a sellout, as we experienced last year.

We are offering small, medium, and large turkeys with a $50 deposit required at time of reservation. All turkeys are priced at $7.50 per pound at checkout on pickup day.

To reserve your turkey, visit themillrivergeneralstore.com/turkey, come by the store, or call us at 413-229-2663. Or simply tap the link in our bio.

If you love homemade pie but fear making the crust, we’ve got the best news for you: Our executive baker, Deb Bernardini, will be walking you through the process and demonstrating technique at the Humble Pie Hullabaloo on Saturday, Nov. 2 (which is also when we will begin taking pre-sale pie orders for Thanksgiving).

The festival, at Dewey Hall in Sheffield, runs from 1-3 PM and includes a pie exchange and tastings, hot cider and even an optional hike at Bartholomew’s Cobble. Admission is $25, 12 and under for $10. The crowd will be entertained by fiddler Eric Martin.

If you want to join Deb’s workshop, sponsored by our Mill River General Store, you’ll have two chances, at 1:15 PM and 2 PM. Registration is required. Cost is an additional $15. For tickets, go to deweyhall.org/events

We are offering an array of local, organic squash varieties. From the sweet and nutty flavor of the sunshine kabocha to the rich and creamy texture of the butternut squash, we have so much to choose from.

Here’s what we have available in store:

-Sunshine Kabocha
-Winter Sweet Kabocha
-Koginut
-Delicata
-Acorn
-Butternut
-Honeynut
-Spaghetti
-Tetsukabuto
-Sugar Pumpkin

And there are so many delicious ways to enjoy squash! You can roast it with a little olive oil and your favorite seasonings, puree it into a creamy soup, use it as a filling for tacos or burritos, or even spiralize it into “noodles” for a healthy pasta alternative. Squash also pairs beautifully with flavors like cinnamon, nutmeg, and maple syrup, making it a perfect ingredient for fall desserts like pies and cakes. The possibilities are endless!

Starting today, we will be accepting pre-orders until the end of day Monday, Oct. 7. Pick up will be mornings, Friday Oct.11 and Saturday, Oct.12.

After a sundown to sundown fast on Yom Kippur, when observant Jews take time for spiritual self-reflection and repentance, a rather large and celebratory meal is usually in order. And that means bagels. And lox. And cream cheese, red onion and capers.

This year, our in-house baker, Deb Bernardini, is turning her skills over to hand-crafting plain, sesame, poppy, everything, salt, rye/caraway and egg/poppy bagels.

Each 6-pack is $15 except the egg-poppy, which is $18. (No mixing of bagel types within packages.)

You can reserve by coming to the store or by calling
413-229-2663.

Just about everybody needs some extra sweetness in their lives these days. And we can offer a little help with that.

Our Berkshire Wildflower Honey from our Mill River Farm bees, and bushels of apples from local EcoCertified growers, are in abundance at the store, both used in honoring next week’s Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. In an ancient and time-honored tradition, celebrants dip sliced apples into honey as a symbol of hope for a sweet year ahead. Sometimes the kids will even dip twice!

Our honey comes in quarts, pints, 12-ounce jars and even travel sizes, and once you’ve tried it, you’ll never go back to commercial brands. It’s that good, and is a longtime fan favorite. Beekeeper and farm owner Jan Johnson says: “Early fall is a time when the bees are gathering the last bit of nectar and pollen available in the environment until the first frost.’’ So now’s the time to get busy and get some Mill River honey.
