Albert Norwalk, 84, a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and respected member of the Plainfield, NH, community, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2025.
Born in Cleveland, OH, on February 9, 1941, to Albert Casimir and Rose (née Cerny) Norwalk, Al was one of five children. He spent his early years in Ohio and Pennsylvania, where his hardworking spirit and sense of humor began to take root.
In 1959, Albert enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Conisteo. Before completing his service in 1962, he had the honor of serving as part of the Honor Guard at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.—a role that spoke to his quiet dignity and deep respect for those who served.
It was in Washington, D.C. that Albert met Nancy Eroszonak, on a blind date. The two were married on November 13, 1964, and built a life in Washington DC., with partnership, love, and mutual respect. Albert worked at the Department of the Interior from 1967 to 1969 as a digital systems operator.
In 1969, Al and Nancy moved to Plainfield, NH, to be closer to Nancy’s family. Al began working at Dartmouth College’s Kiewit Computation Center as a lead computer operator. He later joined C-Tek Software, Inc. as a computer operations supervisor from 1980 to 1986 before returning to Dartmouth College. Where he served as a senior computer operator until his retirement in 2006. During his time at Dartmouth he contributed to the early world of computing with dedication and integrity.
Albert had a love for the outdoors. Whether he was tending to his vegetable garden “he could grow anything but weeds”—relocating trees around the yard, watching birds and wildlife, or pulling snakes from the woodpile He was happy to share everything he knew about the trees and plants and where they thrived and could identify birds just by their sounds. He also loved a good black-and-white western and joked that one day he’d be “hanging out with John Wayne.”
A man of quiet strength and dry, witty humor, Albert was known for his selflessness, generosity, dependability and stubbornness. He always offered help without hesitation; however, preferred doing things himself, and never forgot to say “thank you.” He was polite to everyone he met and appreciated the small courtesies of life. A man of few words his dry, witty sense of humor revealed itself once you truly knew him.
He was pre-deceased by his five siblings and is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Nancy; his son, Kenneth Norwalk (Chante); daughter, Amy Norwalk Gillam (Joe); five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His family takes comfort in the love he gave them, the lessons he taught, and the memory of one of the last things he said: “See you on the other side.”
In lieu of flowers, donations in Albert’s memory may be made to: Friends of the Philip Read Memorial Library Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 163, Plainfield, NH 03781
Albert’s life was a quiet testament to love, service, and perseverance. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
