The Pigeon River Watershed is a headwaters watershed, meaning the source of the river originates within the watershed boundaries, exiting downstream to join other bodies of water; rivers, lakes. etc. Haywood County and the Pigeon River Watershed boundaries line up to create one of the few overlaps in the country, where a headwaters watershed resides within the county boundary. The Pigeon River begins as rain across the Great Balsams, as high as 6,410' and winds its way through the county, moving northward, till it merges with the French Broad River in Newport, TN. The Pigeon River watershed and Haywood County is the highest source of water for the French Broad River and one of the highest sources of freshwater in the Southeast. It all starts here.

Over the last few weeks Haywood County has been experiencing what is known as a swarm of earthquakes. So far seven in the past two weeks.

A swarm is simply a cluster of earthquakes, usually mild, all happening in the same area. Our mountains are ancient and as they erode slowly over time, tension is released in the form of small earthquakes.

So far these have been shallow and mild, so much so that most people haven't noticed the weakest of the recorded quakes.

These small quakes will continue as long as needed to release tension in the rock. They could be finished at any time or continue for a little longer, but there is no way to know.

Geologists have investigated this swarm and found no reason to believe that any human activity could be the cause of these quakes. They are simply a natural event that happens from time to time.

The good news is that earthquakes of the magnitude we've experienced so far rarely cause any significant damage beyond rattled plates.
