The Huset's Hall of Fame committee would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Hall of Fame inductee Leland Goehring. Leland and Lori Goehring's son, Ben, passed away after a tragic explosion at their home near Humboldt on October 17th.
Leland was inducted into the Huset's Hall of Fame in 2020. He won 17 feature events at Husetâs in the six-year span and won the track championship in 1991 and 1992. In 1991, he was focused on winning the title at all three tracks, but the feat came up just one point short at Rock Rapids. He won the title at Husetâs and Madison.
The road to recovery for Leland and Lori's injuries will be a long one, so we have attached a link to the Go Fund Me page to assist the family in this time of need.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Goehring family.

The Huset's Hall of Fame Committee would like to take this opportunity to THANK some wonderful people for their generosity.
The Egge family and the Matthews family teamed up to print commemorative t-shirts, honoring the Jim Matthews driven and Jay Egge owned "15-Blue Thunder" race car from the 70s. Those families offered all proceeds from t-shirt sales to be donated to the Huset's Hall of Fame. The Huset's Hall of Fame Committee would like to extend our sincere condolences to Hall of Famer Gary Zitterich and the Zitterich family on the passing of Gary's mother Mary Anderson.
Gary was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014 and is a past voting member, now special advisor to the Hall of Fame committee.

OK everybody, hereâs the question of the night. How many people have ever won a feature event at Husetâs Speedway as a driver, and as a crew chief? The only one I could think of that wouldâve possibly done it is Guy Forrook, who, by the way used to be Dannyâs crew chief. ďżź. You CAN NOT make this stuff up!!!

Donât forget, tomorrow is the big day at Husetâs Speedway as the Hall of Fame committee will induct five new members.
The day begins with the social and reunion from 4pm until 6p at the track in the south parking lot area. It is free and open to the public, there will be vintage and restored racecars on display for you to enjoy.
Then our induction ceremony will be at intermission of the races as we induct Dale âShortyâ Graf, G. Richard âDickâ Hansen, Bill Hill, Dana Gulbrandson and Danny Lasoski.

The Huset's Hall of Fame social and reunion event and induction ceremonies are this Sunday at Huset's Speedway and we complete our five-part series on featuring our newest members into the hall. Today, we focus on one of the best ever at Huset's, Danny Lasoski.

Danny Lasoski is one of the most decorated Sprint Car drivers in history. He credits much of that success to his days racing at Husetâs Speedway.
Lasoski collected 42 feature wins at Husetâs and he also won the 410 Sprint Car championship at Husetâs in 1989, 1990 and 1993 when he teamed with car owner, fellow Hall of Famer Guy Forbrook (Hall of Fame Class of 2018).
The Lasoski/Forbrook duo was a formidable team in the 1980s and 90s as they won multiple feature events around the country, including their first World of Outlaws feature in Oklahoma City in 1989.
Before winning some of the biggest races in the Sprint Car world, Lasoski began his career near his hometown of Dover, Missouri. He raced consistently in Marshall, Odessa, and Sedalia in Missouri, along with Lakeside Speedway near Kansas City, KS.
He then teamed with Forbrook to make his mark. When he first arrived at Husetâs in 1989, he said he liked it âfrom the get-go.â
âThereâs no escape at Husetâs,â Lasoski said. âYou canât get away from the inside berm or the outside wall. Youâre in a gymnasium with fighter pilots. When I saw that, I thought this has to be action packed from the time they drop the green until they drop the checkered. Thatâs exactly how it is.â
Lasoski went on to win the famed Knoxville Nationals four times in 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004 and the World of Outlaws season points championship in 2001.
âI may have learned how to go fast at Knoxville, but I learned how to race when I went to Husetâs because you had to learn how to pass cars and get it done in a hurry,â he said. âIf you want to race, you go to Husetâs and learn how to race.â
Although heâs never officially retired, Lasoski hasnât raced a Sprint Car since a third-place finish in 2017 at age 58 in Knoxville. His last race at Husetâs was the Silver Dollar Shootout in 2016 where he finished third.

With Hall of Fame Sunday fast approaching, Huset's Hall of Fame presents the fourth in our five part series, spotlighting the Class of 2023. Today, we focus on Dana Gulbrandson. Enjoy.

In just nine short seasons, Dana Gulbrandson made a big impact at Husetâs, collecting 12 feature wins and inserting himself into one of the best rivalries the track has ever seen.
Like many Hall-of-Famers, Gulbrandson grew up going to Husetâs with his family. After graduating from Dell Rapids High School, he took his first crack at a Late Model Street Stock when he was 21 years old, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Terry.
He won over fans at Husetâs and became part of a rivalry with fellow Hall-of-Famers Marty Barber and David Krueger, whose battles were that of legend throughout the 80s and 90s. So much so that a special âGrudge Raceâ was held between Barber and Gulbrandson where just the two of them were on the track to the delight of the crowd.
Gulbrandson also teamed with Barber on the formidable Benâs Bargain Barn stable for three years.
He raced his own car after that and called it quits at the age of 30 in 1996. Working from sunup to sundown in the road construction industry cut both into his time to work on the car each summer, as well as taking its toll on his body.
Although no longer in a race car, Gulbrandson continues working at a hobby that his father introduced him to as a youngster. Gulbrandson has 20 classic cars that heâs either purchased or restored over the years.
The 58-year-old and his brother Terry still own T & R Contracting - a road construction business in Sioux Falls.
He is the uncle to current stock car drivers who frequent Husetâs in Cory Yeigh and Dustin Gulbrandson. Yeighâs father, Dave, is an engine builder and built Gulbrandsonâs power plant in the latter part of his career.

It's Huset's Hall of Fame week and we continue to feature our five inductees. Today, our featured inductee is Dale "Shorty" Graf.

Dale "Shorty" Graf may have been born small in stature, yet his influence grew larger than life in many ways throughout Sioux Falls and the surrounding areas. Although his body was frail, he prevailed and overcame many obstacles in his lifetime.
Shorty learned professional sign painting at an early age from a mentor, fondly called "Blacky." He was an avid dirt track racing fan and hand-paint multiple race cars, including each of the Haugan (Gil Haugan, Class of 2000) and (Vern Haugan, Class of 2011) cars between 1956 and the early 80s. He was instrumental in purchasing the Lee Petty Plymouth in 1962, making the long-distance road trip to North Carolina to purchase the stock car. He was an active co-owner of many racecars in the Sioux Empire throughout his career and sponsored several Haugan modifieds, winning several point titles.
Shorty was a natural-born promoter. He hired many drivers for his modifieds in the mid 60s including Tiny Lund, Johnny Beauchamp and Roger Larson. He was the "self-proclaimed" recruiter for selecting trophy girls at Huset's Speedway each week.
Shorty owned and operated a popular night club in Sioux Falls. "Shorty's Club" offered live entertainment, ranging from local talents such as Myron Lee and the Caddies, to country music legend Conway Twitty and renowned pioneer of rock and roll rockabilly music, Jerry Lee Lewis, just to name a few. Shorty's Club was inducted into the South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
Shorty cruised the streets of Sioux Falls perched on his "milk stool" behind the steering wheel of his flashy Cadillac. There are countless stories to share about Shorty. He was a "one of a kind guy" that kept everyone smiling with his quick wit and one liners humor. He was fun-loving, adventuresome, extraordinary friend and an integral part of the racing community. It's funny how the littlest things in life can make you feel larger than life.

This Sunday is Hall of Fame Sunday at Huset's Speedway and each day this week, we will be featuring an inductee from this year's class, leading up to induction night on Sunday. Today's spotlight shines on Bill Hill.

Bill Hill had nine career victories in his Husetâs Speedway career, but heâs best known for bringing technological innovations to the track.
He came to South Dakota in 1964 with Hank Hanestad, a sprint car owner from California. Hanestad was originally from Sioux Falls, and came back in late 1964 with his sprint car to race at several IMCA events in the region.
After befriending fellow Hall-of-Famer Dave Engebretson (Class of 2000) that summer, Hill returned to Watsonville, Calif., after the 1964 season. However, he returned to South Dakota in 1965 with another fellow Hall-of-Famer, Rich Giadone (Class of 2013). The duo built a formidable, and recognizable, purple No. 43 modified for the entire 1965 season at Husetâs.
Traveling back-and-forth from California to South Dakota for several years, Hillâs innovation began to take shape at Husetâs. Hill was the first to put a wing on top of his car at San Jose Speedway in California. With the wing, he won two straight. By the third week, legend has it that every sprint car at San Jose had a wing.
In South Dakota, he built modified cars that were lower to the ground with a solid center of gravity. He engineered torsion bars, torsion arms and rear suspensions that had never been seen at Husetâs.
After spending several years racing at Husetâs, Hill and his wife Loretta moved the family back to San Jose in 1974 where he raced for three years at Clovis Speedway, Fresno Speedway and Altamont Raceway Park in Tracy.
The family returned to South Dakota in 1977 where Hill raced sparingly for Engebretson before retiring later that season.
Hill passed away in 1996 at the age of 61.

One of the most important days in the history of Huset's Speedway happens this Sunday as the Huset's Hall of Fame committee will induct five new members.
The day will start off with a social for inductees and their families along with a Hall of Fame member reunion from 4pm to 6pm at the track on the south end of the parking lot in the picnic gazebo area. This is free and open to the public and it's an opportunity to meet the inductees and their families, along with seeing past inductees.
This year, we will also have two restored race cars on display. Then, the induction ceremony will be held at intermission of the races that evening.
Each day this week, we will be featuring an inductee from this year's class, leading up to Hall of Fame night on Sunday. Today's spotlight shines on G. Richard "Dick" Hansen.
G. Richard "Dick" Hansen

Dick Hansen got his speed fix initially on a drag strip in California.
Born in Sioux City, Hansen and his family moved to Sioux Falls where he graduated from Washington High School in 1948 before entering the United State Air Force. Following the Air Force, Hansen moved to California where he made his early mark in motorsports. Hansen became a front-runner on the drag strips in California and his family still has trophies from Pomona, San Gabriel and San Bernardino between the years of 1955-57.
He moved back to South Dakota and married Marvel in 1958 when he began his racing career at Husetâs as a 28-year-old. Over the course of his career at Husetâs, Hansen collected 20 feature victories.
After he completed his motorsports career on an oval, Hansen went back to the dragstrip and held several records in the Sioux Falls region. The pilot of the famed âHair Benderâ dragster, Hansen won races in Marion, S.D., Wichita, KS, Davenport, Iowa, and many points in between.
There were two versions of the âHair Benderâ - a 1964 Belvedere and 1968 Corvette - and both were named because of car owners Gordan and Randy Stewart, who owned Stewart Hair School in Sioux Falls. Hansen won in both cars.
Hansen worked for Billion Chrysler as their parts and service manager for 22 years in Sioux Falls and could be seen riding dirt bikes with his children - Steve, Stuart, and Heather - at Saddleback Racetrack near Renner.

Welcome to the Husetâs Speedway Hall of Fame

The first race at Husetâs Speedway in Brandon was on Sunday afternoon May 23rd, 1954. Since that original beginning a lot of people have either laid down tire marks, slung dirt over the walls, tweaked with a wrench, wiped mud off, sponsored, officiated, recorded, or sat in the grandstand. To honor and remember this extraordinary group of people the hall of fame was formed. The folks who are enshrined in the hall of fame fall into one of the above categories and each has earned the right of admission into the hallowed hall. The members are a proud group and they are quick to tell all listeners that being in the Husetâs Speedway Hall of Fame is an honor to be remembered forever.
The idea for a hall of fame for the little 3/8 mile dirt speedway was first proposed in 1979 at the 25th anniversary, but then promoter Fred Buckmiller was not convinced of the idea. A bit of irony is the first hall of fame class included Mr. Buckmiller.
The second attempt to establish a hall of fame was successful and the original selection committee met in April of 1998 to kick start the idea. The first five members of that committee were: Bruce Conley, a sports writer for the Argus-Leader newspaper with a great knowledge of racing; Don Jones, a former track champion as well as engine and car builder and later official at the track; Harold Petree, also a former champion and driver at the track since the 1950âs and later also an official; Jay Egge, a driver, owner, engine and car builder, sponsor and chief of the Split Rock Fire Department which provided fire safety at the track; and Tom Savage a representative of the media. At that first meeting the group drew up bylaws which remain in effect today. The basic bylaws were to be eligible for admission to the hall of fame a person had to have âbeen involved for at least one full yearâ in any of the above categories. This particular provision was to insure that only people who had âgrownâ with the track would be considered and not drivers like Steve Kinser or Tony Stewart who only appeared on occasion. Another of the bylaws was âselection committee members will not be influenced by any outside sourcesâ which kept the decision making processs exclusive to the committee. Each of the original committee members then wrote down names of possible first class inductees and 13 names were tabulated. The committee then met one week later, a week to think about the 13 to arrive at 5, and made the first selection to the Husetâs Speedway Hall of Fame. Those first inductees selected were: Fred Buckmiller, promoter from 1958 until his death in 1982; Til Huset, who built the speedway; Marshall Gardner, a driver who ran in the first race and was a consistent top racer and among the first to realize the value of good press, Jim Matthews, who also ran the first race and was later a champion; and Paul Stogsdill who won the first feature on that historic May 23rd. And thus the Husetâs Speedway Hall of Fame was off and running.
In the ensuing years, the Husetâs Speedway Hall of Fame continued to grow and achieve more visibility, stature and credibility. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Husetâs Speedway Hall of Fame committee, the process of nominating persons to the hall of hame has expanded with a simple nomination form, and has also gained interest with updates and follow through procedures. The Husetâs Speedway Hall of Fame page has added the memories that embody the history of the famed oval. This has kept all interested parties current with the Hall of Fame.
Of the original five member committee only Don Jones remains and serves as the unofficial âold timerâ for consultation and recommendations to the Hall.
History can never be overlooked regardless of the venue and the history of local racing will live on forever.
