DIVALI - Day 2 CHOTI DIVALI OR NARAK CHATURDASHI

Choti Diwali is celebrated this year on October 30th. This day is celebrated a day before Laxmi Puja and celebrated across the country with great pomp and show in India. This day holds significance as it is the day Lord Krishna triumphed over Narakasura, the demon king.

People purify and clean their surroundings on this day in order to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. They make rangolis and decorate their homes.

Dhanteras - DIVALI DAY 1

Dhanteras - Dhanatrayodashi
Dhanteras or Dhanatrayodashi is an important Hindu festival that falls on the thirteenth day of Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) of Kartik month. It is a part of the Diwali festival. Some people consider it the starting day of Diwali, while some believe it to be the second day (the first being Vasubaras). It is mainly celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda. Dhanteras is the day of cleaning Lord Krishna’s ornaments, according to Satsangi Jeevan by Shatananada.
What is Dhanteras Also Known As?

Dhanteras is also known as Dhanatrayodashi, Dhanvantari Trayodashi, or Dhanvantariterasa.
Which Gods are Worshipped on Dhanteras?

Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Dhanvantari, Lord Yama, and Lord Kubera are worshipped on this day.
What to Buy on Dhanteras?

It is believed that buying certain items on Dhanatrayodashi brings good luck and prosperity.
1. Gold and silver.
2. Coriander seeds.
3. Utensils (not made from steel/iron).
4. Broom.
5. Electronic items.
6. Business-related things.
7. Gomti Chakra.

What Not to do on Dhanteras?

1. Do not give coriander seeds to anyone.
Coriander seeds are of utmost importance on this day. In Indian languages, they are called Dhane or Dhaniya, which also means wealth. Hence. one should not give it to anyone as it is believed to bring bad luck. Also, one should treat these seeds as Goddess Lakshmi Herself and not insult them by touching them with feet or throwing them here and there.
2. Do not pay loans and lend or borrow money. It is believed to bring bad luck, and the doer suffers financial losses.
3. Do not buy items with sharp edges, leather items, or items that are made from iron/steel.
4. Avoid using glass items because breakage of glass is considered inauspicious.
5. Do not wear or use black clothes.
6. Don’t buy a car.
7. Do not buy fake gold.
8. Do not eat non-veg food or drink alcohol.
9. No Vastu Shanti on this day.

SIMPLE PITRI PAKSH OFFERING

TARPAN
1. Knot kush (darbha) grass and plant it in the ground/flower pot or vice versa. This should be located in a clean spot.
2. Take a basin, lota or other appropriate vessel and make tilanjali consisting of water, black til and as per tradition, rice, flowers, tulsi leaves etc
3. While facing south the tilanjali is offered on the knot in honour of the ancestors (manush pitris).
4. The tilanjali is offered through the pitri tirth of the right hand. This is the area between the thumb and first finger
5. If a kush grass cannot be planted then it is also acceptable that the tilanjali be offered into a river or at the base of an auspicious tree eg. Tulsi or even into another vessel such as a thali or basin depending on circumstances. In this case if possible, a strand of kush grass is held across the hand so that the tilanjali flows along it and out through the area between the index finger and thumb of the right hand.
6. Mantra to be recited while offering:
Om (name(s) of deceased) tarpanam tava upa-tishtha-taam
7. This can be done five (5) times.
8. For all ancestors you should replace the name of the deceased with ‘sarva pitrasya’

PINDA DĀN
1. A pinda (or multiple pindas) is offered at the base of knotted strands of kush (darbha) grass. Pinda is made with
ground rice, black til, milk, ghee and honey.
Mantra: Om (name(s) of deceased) pinda daanam tava upa-tishtha-taam
2. The pinda may be worshipped with chandan, insence, flowers etc.
3. A lit deeya is also placed close to the pinda with the flame facing south.

BHOJAN (Food offering)
Vegetarian food is also offered at the base of the kush grass, while facing south. This share should contain water/soft drink/juice, tulsi leaves and sprinkled with black til as per tradition.
Mantra: Om (name(s) of deceased) bhojanam tava upa-tishtha-taam

People may also be invited to partake of meals. Seedhas/gifts may also be given to pundits, the needy, mandir etc. with
the following recited:
Om Shri Krishna arpanam
