Don’t Destroy Your Chain Investment!

Today’s chains will give you many miles of riding use – Make sure you don’t ruin your chain investment by installing a new chain on old sprockets or vice versa. Even if the chain happens to fit onto the old sprockets, the old sprockets will make a new chain wear faster reducing the overall life of the chain. This image shows a new chain that won’t fit on the old worn sprocket. Get the maximum life out of your RK Chain by always changing the sprocket whenever you change the chain and keep up on proper chain maintenance. Never connect two different brands of chain and always use the connecting link specific to that chain model.

Are you solid?
For longer chain life the chain’s bushings should be solid. When bushings are solid there is no lateral exit for the grease to escape, unlike with curled bushings that have a gap. RK Chain’s solid bushings are cold forged which strengthens the metal and results in a stronger more rigid chain.

Can you lift your chain off the back of your sprocket?

Being able to lift your chain off the back of the sprocket is called Chain Flotation. Pulling the chain away from the sprocket is a warning sign of chain elongation. Elongation occurs as chains age and the internal pins and components start to wear. The chain should either be adjusted or replaced soon.

Do you have missing or damaged chain seals?

Using improper cleaning chemicals and/or using improper cleaning tools (ie Wire Brush) can result in the installed chain seals drying out or being damaged. Once the chain seal has been damaged the chain’s wear life will be reduced. It is recommended to replace the chain immediately once you see missing or damaged seals.

NEVER use a wire brush, brake cleaner, carb cleaner, kerosene, or any other harsh chemical on your sealed chain. When cleaning and lubricating your chain always make sure to use a motorcycle specific O-ring safe chain cleaner and l**e and use a soft bristle brush or rag to get rid of dirt and debris.
