Our Sommelier built his career in San Francisco, one of the world class regions for wines, and where many professionals in the industry trained, and thrived on the ecosystem of wineries, winemakers, and distributors. He is a Certified Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers, and a Knight of the Confraria do Vinho do Porto. Some of the wineries that we have partnered with, were a result of relationship built then, e.g. With his origins in the west coast of the United States, our US wines from Walla Walla, Willamette Valley, Edna Valley, and Washington State are close to his heart. So it means so much to us to be able to bring to Singapore these wines, some of which have over 95 points rating on Wine Spectator, Decanter, Robert Parker and the likes. We hope that you take a moment to have a sip of our wines through our wine tasting events, or just taking a leap and buying a bottle! We would love to savour them with you in person, but these Covid times have not been the best for social gatherings. 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐚’𝐬 🇺🇸 𝐎𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫

Bonny Doon Vineyard, founded by Randall Graham in the 1980s, is an iconic and innovative Californian winery and one of the first to popularise Rhone grape varietals in California. Whilst working at the Wine Merchant in Beverly Hills, Randall Grahm had the opportunity to sample many great French wines and devoted himself to replicating these in the States. He soon found success working with Rhone varieties in California’s Central Coast and has been labelled as one of the original ‘Rhone Ranger’ winemakers.

We just poured their wines at an event over the weekend and the Picpoul shined really, really nicely! 🍷

Vin de terroir wines are ones that express a sense of place and this is typical of Old World wines, whilst vin d’effort wines aim to express the winemaker’s stylistic intentions and is a more common characteristic of New World Wines.

Bonny Doon aim to showcase ‘terroir’, as is more typical of Old World wines. In order to achieve this, Bonny Doon make wines with as little intervention as possible with the aim to show respect to the vineyard soils. Since 2004, their grapes have been grown biodynamically.

As proprietors of one of the area’s first vineyards, the efforts of Seven Hills Winery have helped strengthen a community that values environmental stewardship to protect the future. For the past 15 years, they have practiced sustainable agriculture in order to be responsible guardians of the land, and currently hold LIVE and Salmon Safe certifications for their estate SHW Founding Vineyard.

On Sunday at the Grape Escape we poured Stolpman Vineyard’s La Cuadrilla and it was a huge hit. Their whole portfolio is definitely worth checking out as these wines punch well above their price points. Elegance and pure fruit, Stolpman continues to show the world how amazing American wines can be!

Stolpman Vineyards’ story is reminiscent of the early pioneers of American winegrowing; they started with a dream of cultivating the land with their family and producing world class wine. Since then, their family has grown to include a full-time staff of over 30 people and their grapes have brought Ballard Canyon AVA to the forefront of California Syrah and beyond.

To be clear, there really isn’t a linear, singular Stolpman story here – rather, there are what feels like dozens of important and pivotal stories that come together to make Stolpman, Stolpman. To preview, Peter’s father, Tom Stolpman, didn’t just happen upon limestone-laden vineyards in Santa Barbara County, he sought them out, specifically (see our first question below). The vineyard was founded in 1988, but Ballard Canyon didn’t become a proper AVA of its own until 2013, due in part because of Stolpman. There’s Ruben, an actual ‘Grape Whisperer’ and the keeper of these vineyards since 1994, who seems to have infinite knowledge of the vines that he works with (see our fifth question). We could go on, and on, and on, and on…

There are the traditional Estate Syrahs (of which we have library vintages), the traditional La Cuadrilla and Para Maria, whereby all profits go to the vineyard staff and the So Fresh series of unique, natural wines with character and precision. The MAJOR KONG has a Wondrous nose with violet perfume plus rich blackberry fruit. Long, complete, balanced with a gradual graceful finish. It doesn’t get any more historic in Western Australia than Forest Hill, who arguably planted the first modern wines south of Perth … potentially before Vasse Felix. No matter what, Forest Hill has become the country’s top Riesling and cool-climate Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. These wines are stunning, will age for years’ to come and yet are elegant and perfect to drink right now? Don’t believe me, try the 2020 Cab Sav and the 2008 to see how these wines age gracefully!

In the late 1970’s, James Halliday wrote that the Cabernets and Rieslings from Forest Hill were his personal choice in the Mount Barker area and were of world class, although difficult to obtain. Later he was to choose a 1980 and a 1979 Forest Hill Cabernet for first and second respectively in a national survey for “The National Times.” Another milestone for Forest Hill was the first shipment of Western Australian grapes sent to the Eastern States for processing into wines boosting recognition of the Mount Barker region.

The Martinelli family has been growing grapes in the Russian River Valley since 1887. At the ages of 19 and 16, Giuseppe Martinelli and Luisa Vellutini left their small village in the Tuscany region of Italy and made their way to California looking for land to farm and start a winery. Giuseppe had been a winemaker in Italy and with his viticultural knowledge, he was hired to plant a vineyard for a farmer in Forestville. 100 years later, the historic Martinelli Estate vineyards are farmed by Lee Martinelli, Sr., and sons Lee, Jr. and George Martinelli. The wines are made by winemaker Courtney Wagoner. These handcrafted wines are unfined, unfiltered, neither cold nor heat stabilized.

Abeja is a beautifully restored, century-old farmstead set in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. Surrounded by 38-acres of creeks, gardens, and vineyards, the estate is home to the award-winning Abeja winery and tasting room. Just outside Spain’s capital is arguably the most innovative winery established in the country in the past three decades: Andres Morate. A family winery started in 1999, it is the first organic and vegan winery in the Madrid appellation. This is a place of precise grape growing and winemaking.

With just 20 hectares of organically grown vineyards, and its proximity to Madrid, this property has held true to its status as a pioneer for high-quality, well-priced wines made from Muscat + Airen, 100% Tempranillo and Tempranillo, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon blends.

Woodward Canyon Winery was established in 1981 by Rick Small and his wife, Darcey Fugman-Small. The winery was named for the canyon where Rick’s family farmed for multiple generations and where the Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard is now located. Woodward Canyon was the second winery in the Walla Walla Valley, and the Smalls were instrumental in the process of obtaining federal approval of the Walla Walla Valley Appellation in 1984. The winery has consistently produced premium, age-worthy cabernet sauvignons, Bordeaux-style blends and merlots as well as chardonnays. We started partnering with Woodward Canyon this year, bringing these stellar wines to the shores of Singapore.
