The five steps of wine tasting 🍇
1…. SEE
• Observe the wine’s color, clarity, and intensity by holding the glass at an angle against a white background. • Look for hues (e.g., deep red, pale yellow-green) and opacity, which can indicate the wine’s age, variety, and quality.
2…. SWIRL
• Gently swirl the wine in your glass to aerate it, releasing its aromas.
• Notice how the wine clings to the glass (the “legs” or “tears”), which can hint at its alcohol content or body.
3…. SMELL
• Bring the glass to your nose and inhale deeply.
• Identify primary aromas (fruit, floral, herbal), secondary aromas (yeast, bread from winemaking), and tertiary aromas (oak, spice, or earth from aging).
4… SIP
• Take a small sip and let it coat your palate.
• Focus on the flavors, texture, and balance of sweetness, acidity, tannins, and alcohol.
5…. SAVOUR
• Notice the finish: how long the flavors linger and the sensations they leave behind.
• Reflect on the overall experience, complexity, and quality of the wine.
