The principal expression is J&B Rare, which is a light-coloured and light-bodied whisky, ideal for mixing. Fresh, grassy and nutty on the nose, J&B offers malt, spice, fruit salad and sweet grains on the well-balanced palate. The blend contains more than 40 individual whiskies, with Speyside malts at its core, and in particular its ‘heart malt’ Knockando, along with Auchroisk.

Other variants to have been developed include J&B Jet – smooth and distinctively packaged in a black bottle – and J&B Reserve – aged for 15 years, with a malty, elegant style – along with J&B Urban Honey liqueur.

Bristol Cream (17,5%, Harveys, L5295)
Nose: sweet and reasonably nutty. Caramelized apples, raisins, with hints of toffee. There’s a hint of spicy oak underneath. You can sense some of the Oloroso in the background, but most of its fragrance is flattened out.

Mouth: actually less cloying (less creamy, if you like) than I expected. Flavourwise, this is basically what you expect from a sweetened Oloroso. Plenty of sweet raisins and prunes. Plain caramel. Hints of hazelnuts. Again fairly flat when compared to an authentic (sweetened) Oloroso, which would be spicier and more intense. Except for the lighter body, it’s hard to notice any Fino or Amontillado.

NOSE
Approachable and rich. Hints of polished wood and toasted hazelnut, then stewed baked apples, dried dates and soft brown sugar.
PALATE
After a burst of sweetness and crunchy nuts, there's a creamy, fruity Speyside abundance to indulge. Firm, with a hint of sugar to round it out. Espresso coffee with brown sugar. Warm and inviting. And with water, the texture is good. Light sweetness, then chewy, with a strong spread of flavors on the mid-palate, all balanced by light acidity.

FINISH
Medium to long, elegantly drying and crisp, with a fun, sweetly nutty chew-ability to round it out.

In 1984, Les Grands Chais de France (GCF Group) conceived of a branded bottle consisting of characteristic curved bottleneck and a large body.Calling the bottle design "Josephine", its manufacture required the adaptation of existing industrial tools. The new brand was named J. P. Chenet. JP Chenet won a Packaging Oscar and the Verre Avenir award in 1991.
