Georges Seurat ✨ George painted people relaxing in a park on an island in the Seine River called La Grande Jatte. He worked on the painting in several campaigns, beginning in 1884. He added small dots in complementary colours that look solid and luminous from a distance. Seurat's use of this systematic and scientific technique, called Pointillism, made his art different from the Impressionists. Seurat liked modern life, like Monet and Renoir, but he wanted to capture something more than the light in nature. He wanted to make things last forever, like Egyptian and Greek art and Italian Renaissance paintings. He told the French poet Gustave Kahn, "The Panathenaeans of Phidias formed a procession." He wanted to make modern people move around like they do on ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. Some critics thought his figures were a comment on modern Parisian society. Seurat made the final changes to La Grande Jatte in 1889. He added a red, orange, and blue border to the canvas to make it look like a frame.

“I have made a solemn vow never to send my drawings because people have cheated me. In particular, just today I found... that, having done a drawing of souls in Purgatory for the Bishop of St. Gata, he, in order to spend less, commissioned another painter to do the painting using my work. If I were a man, I can't imagine it would have turned out this way.” - Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 - 1653)

Pieter Bruegel the Elder was a Dutch Renaissance painter and printmaker. He gained experience in Italy and France before going to Antwerp, where he became a master. The older Dutch master Hieronymus Bosch influenced Bruegel's art. He was inspired by nature, as shown in artworks like 'Landscape with the Fall of Icarus' (1558) or 'Winter Landscape with a Bird Trap' (1565). Although Italian style was popular, Bruegel the Elder preferred a simpler style. He was the first Netherlandish painter to focus on village life, as seen in 'Netherlandish Proverbs' (1559). He also painted religious works like 'The Tower of Babel' (1563).

Some of the most valuable exhibits. ✨
It's the most iconic work of art in the world, and the most expensive. In 1962, the Mona Lisa was valued by insurers at $100,000,000. IN today's prices that's about $860,000,000. In reality. The Louvre would never part with this work of art, making it truly priceless.

One of the most famous and expensive gemstones is the Hope Diamond. This diamond is renowned for it's large size, flawless clarity and rare deep blue colour. Weighing in at 45.52 carats, the Hope Diamond alone costs $250,000,000.

Until the discovery and translation of the Rosetta Stone, hieroglyphs were meaningless and the secrets of ancient Egypt were lost to history. But this decree, carved in three languages on a stone pillar discovered in 1799, enabled scholars to begin translating the symbols.

The work at the very heart of the Albertina, Dürer’s famous 'Hase', can only be shown every few years. Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen received it in 1796 as part of an exchange of artworks with Emperor Francis II. 'Hare' is still regarded as one of the most important artworks of the collection on account of its extraordinarily realistic depiction. Remarkable, too, that the provenance of the drawing can be followed back without interruption to Dürer’s workshop, the windows of which can be seen upon closer examination reflected in the eyes of the depicted hare.

Frida Kahlo, the most renowned Latin American artist in the world, was born, lived, and died at La Casa Azul. The building, which dates to 1904, has been expanded over time. Diego and Frida filled it with colour, folk art and pre-Hispanic pieces to show their admiration for Mexico. The property was modified twice. When Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky lived with Diego and Frida in 1937, the garden was purchased. In 1946 Diego Rivera asked Juan O'Gorman to build Frida's studio. The house has been kept as it was inside. This was done by the poet Carlos Pellicer, who designed the museum display for the space after Frida's death. The house and its contents therefore preserve that intimate atmosphere.

Painted between May and June 1887, Coin de jardin avec papillons marks a turning point in the artist’s career. It is nature in close-up, a departure from traditional landscapes. Six butterflies fly between the foliage, their wings iridescent. The painting shows Van Gogh at a high vantage point, painting what he saw at his feet. The results are not myopic.

In 1887, Vincent van Gogh returned to Paris after 10 years. He was inspired by Impressionism, a new art movement, and painted a landscape that became an example of his radical style.

In the summer of 1887, Van Gogh wrote to his sister Wil that people wanted art to be alive with colour and intensity. This was because he had discovered a new art movement called Impressionism. He had seen it in Paris in the 1870s. ‘I have seen them and admired some Impressionist pictures.’

By 1886, when Van Gogh returned to France, Impressionism was in its second phase. Artists like Georges Seurat and Paul Signac were trying to make the group’s techniques clearer.

Van Gogh was inspired by the Impressionists’ use of light and colour. He created a series of pictures that changed the art world. Richard Kendall says that Van Gogh ‘crossed the divide into contemporary art’ between 1886 and 1887.

The Sistine Chapel is a large chapel in the Vatican built between 1477 and 1480 by Pope Sixtus IV. The ceiling was painted at the commission of Pope Julius II. Before Michelangelo, the walls were painted by famous artists of the 15th century, including Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and Pietro Perugino. After the ceiling was painted, Raphael made a set of large tapestries (1515–1516) for the lower wall. Michelangelo returned to the chapel to paint The Last Judgment, a large wall fresco behind the altar. The chapel's decoration shows what the Catholic Church believes. It is used for important services.

The Ca****la degli Scrovegni is a museum and chapel in Padua. It is named after Enrico degli Scrovegni and is famous for the fresco cycle painted by Giotto in 1303-1305. He sums up the history of salvation in 39 scenes, from the marriage of Mary's mother Anna to the ascension of Christ and the Last Judgment. The fresco cycle is Giotto's most important work. His influence on painting was so great that the first half of the 14th century is called the "Giotto era". The 14th-century frescoes in Padua are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The painting was due to be auctioned in 2021 and was then attributed to an unknown artist. It was estimated at around €1500. When experts began to doubt its provenance, the auction was blocked.

The owners did some research and it turned out to be a Caravaggio canvas. That immediately increased its value enormously. For comparison, another work by the Italian artist was auctioned in 2019 for 150 Million euros.
