Albert was a German painter, draftsman, and printmaker from the Northern Renaissance. He was the most popular and influential Northern European artist of this period. His studio specialises in printing techniques. With the name copper engraving, he could reach a large audience.

The Architect's Dream

Architectural monuments from the distant past are shown in Architect's Dream. They show the styles from which 19th-century architects took inspiration. In the distance, an Egyptian pyramid is shown with an Egyptian temple. Two Greek temples are joined by a wall of rectangular columns. Above this wall, a Roman aqueduct and a round Roman temple are shown.

A Gothic church stands in the forest. The architect lies on a large book of building designs on a tall column. The column is inscribed with the architect's name and the name of the patron, Ithiel Town. Town and his colleague Alexander Jackson Davis popularised the Greek and Gothic Revival architectural styles in America.

Rodolph Salis opened the Chat Noir cabaret in Montmartre in 1881. It became a popular meeting place for artists and writers. In 1892, Salis took his performers on tour during the summer. This poster by Théophile Steinlen, who started his career at the Chat Noir, announced the tour.

The Bookworm by Carl Spitzweg

The artist made three versions of "The Bookworm." This one was sold by the artist in New York and bought by Milwaukee industrialist Ren' von Schleinitz. He donated it to the Milwaukee Public Library when he died. The painting is now on loan to the Grohmann Museum. Spitzweg called it "Librarian." In the 19th century, it was called "The Bookworm." This term is derisive and describes someone who has eaten their way through books.

Napoleon Bonaparte ✨🎨

Napoleon was a French general and leader during the French Revolution. Napoleon I was Emperor of the French from 1804 to 1814. From March 17, 1805 to April 11, 1814 he was also King of Italy and from 1806 to 1813 Protector of the Confederation of the Rhine.

His legal marriage, the Code Napoléon, influenced law in many countries, including the Netherlands and Belgium. He is remembered for the Napoleonic Wars and for becoming emperor. He took control of much of Europe.
Napoleon was born in Corsica. His father was noble. He trained as an artillery officer in mainland France. He became prominent during the First French Republic. He beat the First and Second Coalition against France. In 1799 he staged a coup. He became first consul. In 1804 he became Emperor of France.

Claude Monet ✨

This photo was taken in spring 1921 This is one of a few autochromes of Monet at Giverny, despite many black and white photos. But only colour can show the beauty of Monet's garden, the shapes and the different plants.

Monet in front of his house at Giverny is a good example of the artist's work. This print shows an important stage in the history of photography. It shows how colour reproduction and using photographs in the press developed. In January 1927, a few weeks after Monet died, an autochrome of his house at Giverny was printed in L'Illustration with an obituary.

The autochrome technique, which uses thousands of coloured dots, is similar to the techniques used by Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painters. The photographer has captured Monet's garden, which the artist had designed for his paintings, perfectly.

'American Gothic' is one of the most recognisable images in 20th century American art and is often interpreted as a satirical commentary on the Midwestern character. It shows a farmer and what appears to be his wife standing in front of a quintessentially American farmhouse.
