How can wines be not vegan you'll ask❓⁠
Well, most of them aren't actually 🤪⁠
⁠
Most of the wines in retail are made using products of animal origin. Bone marrow, fish bladder, milk protein, egg white? These are additives that are used for clarifying your wine to get the perfectly clear, transparent wines. ⁠
⁠
are either fined with products suitable for vegans (like bentonite clay) or left unfined and unfiltered (mostly ).⁠
⁠

Kavaklıdere Côtes d'Avanos Narince⁠

Full-bodied whites fan? Then this wine will win your heart 💛

The WINE⁠ 🥂
Kavaklıdere Côtes d'Avanos Narince is made from an indigenous Turkish grape variety Narince.

It's fermented for 1 year in French oak barrels, the grapes come from a vineyard at 950 meters altitude, near Kizilirmak, Cappadocia, Central Anatolia.

After the fermentation the wine rests on lees for 9 months. This makes the taste pleasantly creamy, buttery, ye**ty.

The WINERY⁠ 🏰
Kavaklidere is the first private winery of modern Turkey foudned in 1929 by the And family. They are based in the town of Ankara, however have vineyards all over the country.

They produce wines from a diverse range of local (indigenous) and international grapes, including Kalecik Karası, Boğazkere, Narince and Öküzgözü 🍇

W I N E Review - Avincis Crâmpoşie Selectionata⁠

🍇 The Grape - Crâmpoşie Selectionata⁠
Crâmpoşie has pre-Roman roots, when this region, between the Carpathians and the Danube, was inhabited by Dacians. Within two millennia in this area, Crâmpoşie has adapted perfectly to the Drăgăşani region in Romania 🇷🇴⁠
It became "Selectionata" (selected) as it used to be a sterile grape variety not suitable for self-pollination (more about it in the booklets we send you with our collections & subscriptions). Then a cross was developed and selected for winemaking.⁠

🏰 The Winery - Avincis⁠
The story of Avincis started in 2007 when Cristiana and Valeriu decided to restore the ruined family mansion where Cristiana’s mother spent her childhood holidays and to bring to life again their abandoned vineyard in Drăgăşani. Their goal is to put Romania back on the international map of wines, once again.⁠
⁠
🥂 The Wine - Avincis Cramposie Selectionata⁠
Fresh and expressive bouquet of pear and green apple. Its' taste is persistent and lively, with citrus notes, accompanied by a pleasant minerality.⁠
It is an easy drinking wine (be careful :) ⁠

Producer of the Week - Agri Segretum⁠

Agri Segretum is located in the heart of the Todi DOC. Their wine journey started in 2002 with an aim to unite the Umbrian grapes with the local soils. They selected Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Malvasia Nera and Colorino vines. An artisanal winery in all senses of this word:⁠
▫️ vineyard and cellar is intentionally manual⁠
▫️ only spontaneous fermentation⁠
▫️ organic certified⁠
▫️ suitable for vegans⁠
▫️ average production: 15 000 bottles⁠

W I N E Region - B U R G E N L A N D⁠

It's Austria’s most easterly federal state, sharing a long border with Hungary, and encompassing the Lake Neusiedl, which is Europe’s most westerly steppe lake. ⁠
⁠
🌬 It's very difficult to believe that the flat and sandy shores of Lake Neusiedl are today the source of Austria's greatest wines. This is the hottest wine region in Austria, open to the warm winds from the Pannonian Plain.

🍇 The grapes ripen reliably each year, yet morning mists from the lake keep their acidity in balance.⁠
⁠
Austria is also a “wine hub” of Europe's producers.

One of them is rather a farm then just a winery.

It is home to three generations of the Michlits family and also to vines, cows, fruit trees, flowers, weeds, insects… An ecosystem in harmony 🌱
⁠
🧡 Find their skin contact Weißer Mulatschak (which translates to "white celebration") in our Unusual Whites collection.
Spent 3 days on skins (for the colour and tannins), some extra time on lees (for body and creamy flavours).

Bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulphur.

Winemaking and wine consumption flourished in Anatolia since 7000 BC. But how often do you see a Turkish wine 🇹🇷 in a restaurant wine list or in your favourite wine store❓
⁠
Turkey is one of the oldest yet we don't know much about its' wines and grapes.⁠
⁠
The Terroir Series is an R&D project that aims to study the unknown grapes of Central Anatolia. We don't know the original names of these grape varieties and have no intelligence on what are the most suitable growing conditions for them or what wines to expect as a result of vinification.⁠
⁠
Originally, this series wasn't meant for sale and only a very little number of bottles was released on the market. One of them, Hüyük Ak Üzüm 🥂 (the name of one of the forgotten grapes) is included in our Bacchus'36 wine subscription.⁠

Many wine historians believe that Lambrusco was the first grape to be used for wine production in Italy 🇮🇹

In fact, the Latin word labrusca means literally wild, as in vitis labrusca or wild grape.⁠

Some believe that the Etruscans — the ancient people of Italy — were the first to vinify vitis labrusca in Italy. Its' homeland is the valley of Po river and the region of Emilia.⁠

Produced in agriculture, an artisanal wine with fermentation on natural yeasts.⁠

💛 Etna Wine Tour - May 22-27 - a real discovery expedition to the 100+ year old, ungrafted vines growing in volcanic rocks on 1000+ meter altitude. If this doesn't make you want to "study wine" than nothing can.⁠
Besides visiting wineries, we will also actually hike to the volcano with a volcanologist and study some of the recent lava flows of Etna volcano.⁠

💛 Turkey Wine Tour - June 3-8 - a tour to focus on the native and so rare (some even being recovered from extinction) grape varieties of Turkey. Even though not so easy to find on wine store shelves, Turkey is part of the region where winemaking was "born".⁠
