Russia set to take-over four Ukraine regions after referendum results
Daily Post Nigeria / Wale Odunsi / 1 hour ago

Russia is preparing to annex four regions in Ukraine after the results of controversial referendums were made public.

The voting to determine whether the regions want to become part of Russia faces serious condemnations from countries.

In Zaporizhzhia, the officials announced that 93.11 percent of voters backed the move to join Russia.

In Kherson, the authorities said over 87.05 percent of electors declared their support through the ballots.

In Lugansk, the officials claimed that more than 98.42 percent voted in favor of the incorporation.

In Donetsk, the authorities said the victory was near total with 99.23 percent in favour of annexation.

President Vladimir Putin has given an indication the Kremlin was prepared to assume full control of the regions.

“Saving people in the territories where this referendum is taking place…is the focus of the attention of our entire society and of the entire country”, he asserted.

President Recep Erdogan of Turkey is to discuss the development with Putin after Ukraine sought his intervention.

Erdogan disclosed that President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded Turkey’s support for the affected regions and to “convince Putin.”

“I wish they wouldn’t hold referendums and that we could instead solve the problem diplomaticall”, he said.

Turkey, a member of the NATO defence alliance, has good relations with the two countries at war since the late February invasion.

BREAKING: Atiku, Saraki, Tambuwal, Aliyu, others rebuffed Jonathan’s pleas in 2014 – Wike
The Nation Newspaper / Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt / 26 minutes ago

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has recalled how the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and a former Senate President, Saraki rebuffed former President Goodluck Jonathan’s pleas to rescind their decision of leaving the party in 2014.

Wike said the Sokoto Governor, Aminu Tanbuwal was among those, who humiliated Jonathan after the 2014 convention as they insisted that it was the turn of the north.

He said the party’s constitution contained provisions for zoning of elective and party positions but lamented that some people were doing everything within their powers to manipulate the system.

He said: “There shall be zoning of party and elective offices. It is clear. Not ambiguous. But people will always try to manipulate the system to suit them.

“They slant stories in such a way as to deceive the public. The founding fathers know the complexity of this country. They did it in a such a way as not to have problems.

“People should not forget history. In 2013 and 2014, there was an issue of the presidential candidate. Jonathan emerged. Atiku and others worked out of the convention. Tambuwal and former Senate President all worked out.

“Jonathan did everything to talk to them. But they rebuffed him as a sitting President. President travelled to London to see Atiku, but he rebuffed him. Former Governor Babangida Aliyu admitted that they all agreed to work against Jonathan”.

Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra, is running in Nigeria's presidential race. He discusses his objectives for the country with CNN's Zain Asher.

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, on Monday described fuel subsidy as organised crime and accused the government of being behind oil theft in the country.

Obi, who was the guest speaker at the Private Sector Economic Forum of Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), asserted that no one can steal oil except the government.

“Subsidy is organised crime,” he said while addressing the audience at the event on Monday in Lagos. “We need an aggressive production of local refining.”

Obi, who made the remarks while answering questions from panellists at the event, also reacted to a question on the issue of cost of governance.

“I have allergies to waste,” declared Obi who obviously took a swipe at the government again.

He insisted that there was a need for an overhaul of the security architecture in the country, proposing multi-level policing from the federal to the community security system.

Obi also said Nigerians must hold his government accountable in terms of visible, measurable changes in security, manufacturing for exports, and the use and adherence to the rule of law to consolidate Nigeria’s democracy.

“Good governance must be aimed at providing good service and receiving constructive criticism and moving forward with the goal of bringing back the trust of people to governance.

“Under my watch, all groups such as the youth, women, disabled, vulnerable, and private sector, must be represented in my government’s decision-making process seeing that I am committed to providing a demand-driven leadership.

“As a trader, I am one of you and sincerely recognise your challenges and pain, and would provide my own solutions to the questions that have been raised, particularly, security which is impacting on all other economic problems.

“We have identified and prioritised seven critical areas in line with some Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to ensure purposeful leadership as we secure and unite Nigeria with effective legal and institutional reforms,” he said.
