𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐋𝐄𝐌𝐀𝐍 𝐉𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝟏𝐋 Jack Daniel’s first major line extension in 1988, Gentleman Jack’s double charcoal mellowing makes it an exceptionally smooth - albeit less interesting - drinking experience. Gentleman Jack is a perfect balance of vanilla, caramel, and oak that lands squarely on the sweet, easy-drinking side. Fans of low proof bourbons (such as Basil Hayden’s as an example of a bourbon that others often refer to as their go-to) should find a lot to like with Gentleman Jack. Because it has less of the quintessential Jack Daniel’s flavor notes, those who may not care for the standard Jack might find something to like as well. Gentleman Jack undergoes the same Lincoln County Process (charcoal mellowing) as standard Jack Daniel’s after distillation and before barrelling, at which point there is still no distinction between the two whiskeys. The second charcoal mellowing, which takes place after aging but before bottling, is what makes Gentleman Jack different from standard Jack Daniel’s. The process is considered a subtractive process, removing harsh impurities with the intent of making the whiskey more “smooth.” Along with the impurities, the process also removes color and flavor. Triple Aged for 6 years, this extra aging in barrel gives the Bourbon a fuller flavour that takes on some great winter spice notes such as cinnamon and nutmeg. The Whisky Study ABV: 43% Cask: American White Oak Nose: Buttered popcorn, artificial sweet, toasted caramel, ethanol, and a dollop of wood. There’s a hint of peanut shells but the wood is the strongest note and seems to overpower some of the more nuanced parts of this otherwise soft nose. Palate: This is traditional Beam, with some toasted nuts, mixed with woody char. Overall, it’s a bit thin on mouthfeel and flavors, with the traditional bourbon flavors of vanilla, oak, and caramel coming through, but not leading to much complexity. The sweetness is well balanced with the more savory oak notes. The 86 proof doesn’t provide much of a mouthfeel, and instead falls flat when compared to its similarly priced stablemate Old Tub. In addition, an aliquot of grain whiskey that has been matured in deeply charred American oak barrels sourced from Wild Turkey is added. As a result of this unique combination, the whiskey has hints of citrus, oatmeal, sherry and smoke. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more iconic name in the Irish whiskey world than "Jameson." The Jameson tradition dates all the way back to 1740, when John Jameson was born into a family whose motto, "Sine Metu" ("Without Fear"), was earned through the family's courage in fighting pirates on the high seas during the 1500s. John Jameson himself was a living embodiment of Sine Metu, and his ancestors' bravery inspired in John a boldness that led him not only to open his own distillery in the latter 18th century, but also to pioneer the technique of triple-distilling whiskey — now the gold standard in the Irish whiskey industry. John Jameson lived to be 83 — an impressive feat for someone born in the 18th century — and his descendants John II, John III and John IV all honored his legacy by leading the distillery well into the 20th century. Jameson Irish Whiskey is crafted from a mash of malted and unmalted barley that is triple-distilled — just as it was by John Jameson himself centuries ago — through three separate copper-pot stills: a wash still, a feint still and finally a spirit still. The mash itself is made using barley, maize and pure Irish water, further adding to the unique character of the whiskey. The Ballantine’s brand is one of the world’s highest selling blended Scotch whiskies although the brand also produces a few expressions of single-malt whiskies such as the Ballantine’s Miltonduff, Ballantine’s Glenburgie and the Ballantine’s Glentauchers. History The Ballantine’s brand was established by George Ballantine in 1827 when he ventured into the whisky blending business at the age of nineteen. He was later joined in the business by his sons, George II, Archibald and Daniel Ballantine, and later by his grandson, George Ballantine III. Together, three generations of the Ballantine’s family poured in their efforts into turning the whisky blending business into a success, earning a Royal Warrant from the court of Queen Victoria in 1895. The iconic Ballantine’s square bottle was made such in order to help whisky lovers to sneak in their favorite blended Scotch whisky home during times of Prohibition. 𝓐𝓤𝓒𝓗𝓔𝓝𝓣𝓞𝓢𝓗𝓐𝓝 𝓓𝓐𝓡𝓚 𝓞𝓐𝓚 Inspired by the city since 1823, Auchentoshan has a relationship with Glasgow that spans generations. The city is where traditional craft meets progressive thinking. This has been the basis for producing Lowland whisky of distinction, an innovative approach to single malts with a real sense of place and purpose. Every drop of every Auchentoshan whisky is triple distilled - it takes more time and money, but it's worth it. This whisky is triple distilled and then matured in bourbon, oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks to increase its complexity. The result is a lively and refined malt with notes of vanilla and red fruits. - LIVELY AND REFINED. Alongside the American Oak Reserve, this Auchentoshan Dark Oak was launched in September 2019 as well, exclusive to the global traveller. Next to bourbon casks, this release was also composed with oloroso and PX sherry casks, hence the name. I’m fortunate that my friends Pascal and Ellen visited the distillery early October and brought me two bottles: one to share and one for the collection. The nose is very candy-like and sweet, which is no doubt thanks to the sherry casks in the mix. Sultanas and pineapple, baked apples and candied oranges come first, followed by lemongrass and vanilla and finally some crème brûlée. Neither the bourbon nor the sherry casks dominate, creating a fine balance. It is nicely oily and fresh at the same time. Honeysweet from the first sip. A touch too sweet to my taste even. Luckily some woodspice are there to counter this somewhat. Yes… leave it on the palate for a moment and you’ll soon notice it offers the best of both worlds. Wonderfully sweet notes (candied oranges, candied sugar, sultanas), a lovely spiciness (pepper and nutmeg) and a hint of toasted oak. Again: well-balanced. Good job. ARDMORE HISTORY It was in 1898 that Adam Teacher, son of Glasgow blender William Teacher, decided that the family firm needed its own malt whisky distillery. The site he chose, on the outskirts of the village of Kennethmont in rural Aberdeenshire, was on land owned by family friend Col. Leith-Hay [whose seat Leith Hall is open to the public]. It had water, there was a source of peat nearby, and the immediate surroundings grew barley. As significantly, given the vision Teacher had for the site, the railway between Inverness and Aberdeen ran alongside. By putting in a small branch line he could get casks and cow in, and whisky out. Ardmore has remained in the Teacher’s stable ever since, providing smoke and also top notes to a blend which still sells over a million cases globally (its main markets today are India and Brazil). The original pair of stills were doubled in 1955 and then doubled again in 1974. Two years later, it became part of the Allied Distillers stable – the same year as the distillery’s Saladin maltings stopped. Its stills remained coal-fed until 2001. When Allied was dismembered in 2006, Teacher’s, Ardmore and Laphroaig went to Beam and in 2014 it became part of the new Beam Suntory portfolio. Its importance for its blend has meant that Ardmore has never had a presence as single malt. A quarter cask-finished bottling appeared a couple of years after Laphroaig Quarter Cask, but remained a small-scale release. It has however built up a small but dedicated following among single malt aficionados who seek out the independent bottlings which appear – those from Gordon & MacPhail and Signatory Vintage appear the most frequently. The Botanist Gin It makes so much sense why they call themselves ‘Progressive Hebridean Distillers’. In every new spirit they produce, they are looking from a progressive point of view and keep searching for an exciting liquor. The Botanist Islay Dry Gin was already on shelves with an ordinary bottle years ago. However, with the new bottle, the distillery expresses what they want people to find in this gin. The cylindrical bottle has the Latin names of botanicals embossed on the bottle. On the minimalist sticker, the number 22 is expressed to show the number of Islay botanicals they used. Bruichladdich took a botanical adventure for this gin and despite the 9 classic ingredients of gin, 22 botanicals were hunted and added into the spirit at the last stage of production. In 2004, Jim McEwan took advantage of the demolition of Inverleven Distillery and acquired the Lomond still that belonged to the distillery. There were only 5 Lomond stills and Bruichladdich got the last one. Though it was old and ugly. So they named it ‘Ugly Betty’ Botanicals The chosen 22 botanicals are listed below. Before long, they had been introduced to renowned drinks aficionado Jared Brown at a Negroni party (of all places) and before the evening was out he was ready to join them on their mission to create the world’s best London Dry Gin. 2008 A PETITION FOR SMITHERY Our founders faced a rather unexpected obstacle at the start of their venture – and it arrived in the form of a historic, British law. An excise act still in effect from 1823 made it impossible for distillers to obtain a licence for a still under 1,800 litres, and their shiny new still was only 300 litres. Yet, with persistent passion, unwavering vision (and some Dutch Courage, no doubt), their petition led to the law being changed in 2008. In 1851, Sir Edwin Landseer created the famous painting, an instant masterpiece, that depicts a stag in the Scottish Highlands. John Dewar and Sons purchased the painting in 1919 and hung it proudly. Master blender Stephanie Macleod used the painting as inspiration for this rare and special whiskey. Dewar's 15 Blended Scotch Whisky is a blend of very rare vintage single malt and single grain scotch whiskies. The blend is then married in oak casks for a light, velvety finish.
