The Hunter Valley, just north of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, is one of Australia's oldest and most renowned wine regions. Home of one of the country's unique wine styles (Semillon) and some of the world's oldest (ungrafted, of course) vines, it's also a beautiful place to visit.

Did you know Australia's wine production is spread across many officially designated Geographic Indications (GIs)? These are often what we refer to as "wine regions" and, as in Europe, many Australian GIs have long histories and produce highly distinctive styles based on their particular combinations of climate, soil and grape varieties. Did you know the Hunter Valley is Australia's oldest wine region? First established in the 1820s, the Hunter is home to some of Australia's most famous producers and wine styles.

It's in this same region that Max Lake established Lake's Folly ( ) in 1963, pre-empting the Australian table wine revolution of the 1970s and ushering in a new era of Australian boutique wine production.

The best part is: you can still taste the highly sought after Lake's Folly wines today, and they are better than ever under the guidance of Chief Winemaker Rod Kempe.

Chris Thomas is the Chief Winemaker at Dowie Doole. Working with an incredible collection of meticulously managed estate vineyards in McLaren Vale, Chris crafts pristine wines that range from evergreen regional red styles through to forward-looking wines using "alternate" varieties like tempranillo and vermentino. His wines, even the hard hitting classics, are always outrageously drinkable and we like to think this is a reflection of Chris's sparkling personality!
