Roisin Curley is a Mayo woman and trained pharmacist, who discovered a passion for wine around 15 years ago. What started as a hobby swiftly became a labour of love and since 2015, Roisin Curley has been producing wine in Burgundy. Does a good wine need to come from a good vineyard, an award winning wine producer or a brilliant vintage? If it tastes good, does that make it good? And what about the wines that don’t taste good now? Will they get better in a few years. The answer seems obvious, sadly it’s not that simple. Michelle’s 3 top tips will help everyone, no matter how much practice you have. The best thing about these three tips, you don’t even have to go to wine school to learn them. Next time you are enjoying a bottle make sure to score it out of 10, using the criteria below. Each wine can score a maximum out of 10, with 10 being perfect. Tip One: Length of Flavour (1-3 points) The length of flavour in a wine is indicative of quality. In the world of wine, a longer and more pronounced finish is generally associated with higher quality wines. Wines with a longer finish often indicate better balance, complexity, and depth of flavour. How long is long? For a simple wine the flavour will disappear almost immediately. For a medium wine it will last up to 30 seconds, for fine wine, it will have a long finish lasting up to one minute. Tip Two: Complexity of Flavour (1-3 points) When you’re evaluating a wine for complexity, just remember to count the different flavours and aromas you can detect, think about their intensity, and observe how they evolve and interact while you sip. A simple wine will have only a couple of flavours, whilst a complex wine could have 10 flavours that will include fresh fruit notes, dried fruit notes and even spice. Tip Three: Do I Like it, Would I Buy it Again? (1-4 points) Just because a wine has gold medals on the label or my have won award, doesn’t mean that it’s the right wine for you. One of the most important things to consider when learning about wine, is to consider your own taste preferences.
