A photo from the Garners Heritage Vineyard- just a small part of what the viticulturalists have to go through to protect the crop. All so we can enjoy the fruits of their labour!

For the second week in a row we have had to do "A Walk In The Clouds" just like Keano Reeves only not as romantic!
The frost alarm went off at 2am last week and this morning it was just before 6am so that means a scramble down to the bottom of the vineyard where the bonfires await to be lit.

Loving the 2012 Bloody Hill PN from the genius that is Timo Mayer. Rated- 94JP 93+GW. Timo is renowned as being one of the best Pinot Noir winemakers in Australia. His 2012 Mayer Close-Planted Pinot Noir, rated at 97, is out of this world. We are very privileged to be bringing Timo's wines to Hong Kong for the first time.

Gembrook Hill | La Bodega Wines

Gembrook Hill is set in a beautiful part of the world. Close to the stunningly dense and green forest of the Dandenong Ranges, just to the east of Melbourne, it is just down the road from the world famous narrow gauge steam train; the Puffing Billy. The vineyard itself is in a beautiful natural amphitheater and is a perfect setting for cool climate wines.
Ian and June Marks own and run Gembrook Hill and, with their son Andrew being one of the winemakers, it really is a family affair. The other winemaker is Timo Mayer who has his own label 'Mayer' that we will introduce to you another time.

Their main varieties are Chardonnay (now used only in the production of Blanc de Blanc), Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc, all of which have been highly lauded. Being in the ideal situation for these grapes, Andrew and Timo have a very minimalist approach to winemaking, taking the attitude that wine is made in the vineyard. Their philosophy is having a great affect; they really do produce fine wine. The Pinot Noir is beautifully elegant, the Sauvignon Blanc is rated as one of Australias best and their Blanc de Blanc (made with the Champagne method) is one of the finest of its type, french or otherwise.

It gives us great pleasure to introduce you to Garners Heritage Wines! Garner is of course Belinda's maiden name (and still her name on facebook- not something that I am too worried about, although it might mean that our marriage is not yet 100% official). The vineyard is owned and run by Bel's incredible parents Leon and Rosie.

Both Leon and Rosie come from very old Australian stock, with their ancestors arriving down under from the UK in 1849 and 1853 respectively. As fate would have it they met, a few years later, on a ship heading back to London from Australia. I believe Leon was dressed as a pirate at the time.

Anyway, despite their great Australian heritage Leon and Rosie spent many years in exile; mostly in New Zealand where Leon was a Professor of Optometry. They returned to Australia in 2005, finding their property and planting their vineyard.
The vineyard was planted using Shiraz cuttings generously offered by neighbour and friend Jenny Houghton of Maygars Hill winery.

When it comes to talking about how good this wine is I am of course biased. The fortunate thing is that everybody else seems to be biased towards it as well. The renowned James Halliday has never given a Garner Shiraz a rating of less than 90, and even before the beautiful 2011 vintage the wines were gaining some very prestigious accolades, including a silver medal at the London International wine challenge for the 2009 vintage. But just as telling is the fact that the only vintage not sold out is the 2011- Rosie is not finding it difficult to get rid of her wine. In fact we are looking at trying to persuade Rosie to slow down sales to make sure we can get enough of the stuff out here to Hong Kong!

This current selling vintage, the 2011, was only bottled in 2012 but is already drinking so well that it has won silvers in both the London International Wine Challenge and, most recently, the very prestigious Syrah du Monde (Syrah of the World).

So why is the Garner Shiraz so good? As with all wine, the fruit is the key. The foothills of the Strathbogie Ranges are ideally suited to the Shiraz variety, so that gives great potential. Then it's down to how Leon and Rosie take care of their fruit. Everything from pruning to picking is done by hand. They actually prune very liberally to help produce fruit with a fuller flavour. From vines capable of producing 4 tonnes per acre the aim is to produce about 2 tonnes per acre; quality over quantity being of the essence. After harvest the wine is made by the traditional open vat fermentation method and the wines are left to slowly mature in a mixture of new and old French and American oak.

I'll put up a picture of the vineyard at some point- it really is a beautiful spot. It's an hour and a bit north of Melbourne and they have a cellar door thats open on weekends and by appointment, so if you find yourself in the area it's well worth a visit. They do incredible award winning olive oil too!
