LEGEND OF KHVANCHKARA🤫
One of the popular myths about famous red semi-sweet wine from Racha is that it was Stalin's favourite wine.

You can hear the same about Atenuri (because it was close to his hometown), or Kindzmarauli (just because). Everything depends on the storyteller you're listening to.

In fact, around 1942 Stalin ordered to improve the technological process of keeping the naturally semi-sweet wine from refermenting. Does the fact that he was keeping an eye on Khvanchkara quality during the devastating war meant that it was his ultimately favourite one?

Well, no one knows for sure. The fact is that Khvanchkara PDO exists since 1932 - before the velvety, fruity cuvee of Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli was called Sakipiano Wine, after the Rachvelian Prince Kipiani.

Yes, you understood it correctly: Khvanchkara is not a grape, it's a protected designation of origin. If someone tells you that this grape sucks, because it's too sweet, redirect them to our Wine Picker who is ready to lecture about Aleksandrouli, Mujuretuli, sugar levels and methods to stop fermentation.

"The biggest thing I had to adjust to was making decisions about a very physical thing without physically touching or seeing the other side,” Lado Uzunashvili says.

This could mean having to determine phenolic ripeness without the ability to chew seeds from a grape. Uzunashvili also has checked color extraction during maceration via texted photos and replied on a remote video feed to monitor yeast in the tank for stuck fermentation. And then there are the logistics around approving a new bottling line or production site.

The wine industry is supported by nomadic winemakers who tend vineyards across the globe. These days, however, travel isn't always an option.

March was dedicated to Adjara🌴🌄⛵ The Box of Two and Enogastronomic Box featured two wines: Tsolikouri from Khimshiashvili's Marani in Buknari, and Chkhaveri from Merab and Giorgi Takidze's cellar in Tsoniarisi🍷Some boxes also featured the Tsolikouri from Jamal Biyachuev - by the way, you need to visit his cozy cellar in Mirveti, it's simply lovely there!

We also added some typical regional products to our Enogastronomic box: kuruti (dried kaimaghi - Adjarian curds), tangerine jam and baklava.
