New blog breaking down the role of yeast in fermentation!

We’ve judged at the IEWA for several years, bar last year when Tommy and Tom were struck down by the dreaded ’rona.

So this year, we came armed, with senses fully intact, ready to get stuck in and demolish our tooth enamel with that nuclear English acidity we all crave so much.

And what a success it was. Yet again, 60 producers submitted 120 wines from all corners of the country, ready to be critiqued by a diverse flock of judges headed up by Master of Wine 👏🏼 🍷 🍾

Our event write up / low down of the medal winners is now live on our blog. Read more here!

We tasted some of the best English wines at the IEWA (independent English wine awards) hosted in the iconic Avery's cellars in Bristol and chaired by Liam Stevenson MW.

Californian Sparkling Wine? 🤔🇺🇸

With family in Cali, Tommy has been lucky enough to try a range of traditional method West Coast fizz 🇺🇸 🍾

Unfortunately, in most instances he left feeling that the wines lacked that true sense of place and that the warm climate didn’t provide enough acidity to give the fizz the necessary structure for outstanding sparkling wine ☹️🤔

His most recent trip to the region bucked the trend. Read why in our most recent blog post!

https://www.emergingvines.co.uk/blog/west-coast-sipping-california-love

Tommy took away a few major things from his recent trip to the West coast of the USA and draws many lines and comparisons with our emerging industry. Does the English wine industry have the potential to grow into the Californian industry?

New blog piece now up for some leisurely weekend reading!

Is English wine still niche? In a short answer yes, but the rate at which it is growing is pretty phenomenal. I’ve pulled together some stats and also offered up my first hand experience of what’s happening…for what its worth.

Distinctive 🔥

The Pelegrim NV is a traditional bottle-fermented sparkling wine that is made from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay with reserve wines from previous vintages to give further complexity and a consistent extra dry non-vintage style. The wines are lees-aged in bottle for 36 months to give depth and biscuity aromas which only bottle-fermentation can deliver.

on the advantages of urban winemaking in the UK.

‘Being in London, we are fortunate to have a majority of UK vineyards within hours of our winery in Battersea. This, of course, gives access to work with a number of different vineyards that have their own unique terroir and the flexibility of the type of wine style we can produce. For us, close proximity and short travel distances are important. All of our growers are within 2 hours of the winery, allowing us to maintain a close relationship with them. It also makes them more accessible for our customers. This type of access connects our customers to the source and gives an increased exposure to the wider UK wine industry, something we are striving to achieve.’

Alternative Christmas pairings for the adventurous 😋

Christmas food can be repetitive…The resulting wine pairings? Predictable. 🥱

Turkey and a rich Chardonnay, nut roast and a Pinot Noir and not forgetting a classic English fizz for breakfast etc… in our most recent blog post has decided to go against the grain this year and pair English wine with some alternative Christmas meals, some international, some you may recognise and some most probably not. This will probably mean nobody tries any of his suggestions as you will all most likely be tucking into the classics…we say give them a go!

Sparkling red…. Not a style we’ve ever sold before but this spicy number is something special! 🍷🍾

This is third release of a sparkling red, a style less common unless you’re familiar with the refreshing Lambrusco’s of Emilia-Romagna. The 2019 is 95% Rondo and 5% Pinot Noir all fermented in stainless steel and made in the traditional method.

This unique little number is super fresh and crunchy with red cherry, plum and raspberry characters that are all lifted by the fizz and supported by a warm spice.❤️🍇

‘After a very difficult growing season, Harvest 2021 produced a good yield and some of the best quality Pinot Noir we've seen in years’ - 🍾🍇

With a south-facing aspect, chalk soils and a unique microclimate, Langham’s Crawthorne Vineyard provides the perfect terroir for ripening the classic Champagne varieties – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier 🍇🍇

Did you know that 90% of Devon’s traditional orchards have been lost since the second world war? 🍎 🌳

Polly and Matt of started their journey by locating traditional orchards that had long been forgotten about. Some were completely overgrown whilst others were in such a state that trees needed to be replanted. The premise was to ‘find and foster’ these lost orchards for the land owner in return for the fruit. What they have gone on to do is truly exceptional. 🔥👏🏼

Having worked tirelessly to bring these orchards back to life, everything that they find, they foster in a low intensity manner. This means that they do not spray any herbicides, pesticides or inorganic fertilisers. Everything is managed carefully to ensure quality of fruit whilst encouraging regenerative biodiversity and protecting these ancient varieties. 🍎 🍏

They also graze a small flock of Shropshire sheep to keep weeds under control and increase soil health and in areas where grazing isn’t possible, they mow late in the year to prevent damaging vital habitats for small mammals and insect life. 🐑 🪲 🪱 🐜 🪰

We’re proud to currently stock their ‘Saison Pomme’ - a naturally bottle fermented, bittersweet Devon Cider as well as their ‘Alan’ - a crisp, dry Pet Nat with subtle peach characters Jump online now for your cider fix! 🔥🔥

Vintage 2021 blog has just landed! Check the link to learn about the 2021 season. We look at the challenges that the English wine industry faced, how the harvest went and what we can expect from this vintage 🍇

‘There is no doubt about it - the 2021 vintage was incredibly challenging for the UK wine producers. Challenging, however, does not by any means mean that it was a write off! The best growers prevailed through dedicated hard work, meticulous attention to detail and the odd bit of good luck thrown in. It has been a year that we must dedicate to the vineyard managers and teams because the best of them have managed to produce fruit that will lay the foundations for some world class wines, despite the uphill battle.’ 🍾

Read the full piece on our blog page, preferably with a glass of English wine in hand! 👌
